More scrimmage coverage and other links

Here is the Herald's write up of the scrimmage. It looks like Rich Thompson is still on the BC beat. Boston.com/the Globe had coverage, but it is behind their paywall. Vega did note that Bordner is out with an injury.

Former BC Hockey Captain Bernie Burke passed away last week. He was an All American in 1949.

Men's Soccer tied Northeastern in an exhibition. Their season starts August 30 against BU.

Brian Miller is hoping to stay healthy and build off of last year's solid start.

Alex Albright is out for the season and will require surgery on his back. Best of luck in his recovery.

New soccer Eagles and other links

BCeagles.com released the bios of the six new freshmen and two transfers for the men's soccer team. Four of the newbies hail from New York.

It feels like every ACC team returns a starting QB. While the depth gives the conference advantages that other conferences don't have, I think some of the talent is overrated. In fact, I can't believe that Rettig is considered the 10th best. I would rank him 5th and think he could be even better by the end of the year.

Despite shoulder surgery, Alex Albright is healthy heading into his second NFL season. He's also ready to move to inside linebacker.

In case you missed it, BC will play Baylor in the Charleston Classic this Fall. That gives all the Boston media, the college basketball writers and the BC bloggers a chance to rehash the Donahue-Heslip situation again.

NFL round up

The news broke Saturday, but Peter King snagged the most in depth inter view with new Giant, Mark Herzlich. Mark acknowledges that he could still be cut at any moment, but making the initial roster is a huge step in the process.

The second best story was Alex Albright making the Cowboys.

Good news for McCluskey -- he gets a pay check for the season. Bad news -- he is on the IR and will not play this season. San Diego placed Damik Scafe on their IR.

The Raiders were quick to sign Ricky Brown once the Patriots released him.

Tampa released Thomas Claiborne, but also cut Ryan Purvis. Somewhat surprising on Purvis since he was supposedly in their plans.

Day 2 and other links

The second day of practice was uneventful. Unlike Monday, the weather cooperated. The team is still not in full pads yet.

Spaz and McGovern know the young players will have to step up and everything cannot be dependent on Kuechly.

HD called Rettig the most improved QB in the conference. I also think Rettig's stats from last season are somewhat misleading. While his percentages and TD to INT ratios weren't great, I think you have to look at them in relation to what he was asked to do. I think you'll see a big jump in efficiency this year.

Another day, another glowing Alex Albright story. I just wish that Rob Ryan didn't have to take a backhanded shot at Herzy while complimenting Albright.

Ryan Purvis is now one of Tampa's more experienced Tight Ends. He should make an even bigger impact this year.

The Colts signed Josh Beekman. I hope he sticks as it would be nice to see Beekman and Costanzo on the same line.

Abner Logan has a BC offer but he is determined to visit other schools.

BC opened as a seven point favorite over Northwestern. Now the line is to BC-3. It looks like the early smart money jumped on Northwestern.

Larmond back and other links

Colin Larmond says he's healthy and poised for a big season. If he can stretch the field, I think it will make like easier for Rettig and the offense in general.

Incoming BC basketball winger Lonnie Jackson knows the adjustment to college will be overwhelming. Yet he's still excited to play Duke.

The Capital Region Football Hall of Fame enshrined Josh Beekman for his standout high school, college and pro career. Although the Bears cut him, Beekman is still trying to catch on with another team.

Alex Albright continues to make good impressions with the Cowboys. When he signed with Dallas, I questioned the fit...which reinforces how little I know.

It sounds like Kiwi is ready to have a big year and put his neck issues behind him.

BC soccer player Kevin Mejia spent some time this summer as counselor at a soccer training center.

The recently retired Damien Woody joined ESPN as an analyst. Bristol is getting pretty full of BC guys.

Albright in UFL and other links

The UFL seems like a perfect fit for someone like Alex Albright. No NFL team was going to draft a injury prone tweaner and making a team as an under the radar free agent is tough any year. Add the lockout and it is nearly impossible. Yet the welcoming arms of the UFL give hima chance to prove himself and earn a spot in the NFL. Good luck to him.

Ohio pounded Pennsylvania in the annual Big 33 game. The good news though is future Eagle Dave Bowen stood out for the PA side.

Former BC runner Hope Krause is already impressing on the regional 10k circuit.

Hats off to bceagles.com. When I started this blog they occasionally put up fresh content. Now they are producing unique interviews and features daily for the big sports. Today they put up a video of the team's annual "Picture Day." My only gripe is that their partner CBS Sports doesn't offer embedded functionality. Check out the video on bceagles.com. As for the scenes themselves, the guys seem to enjoy it. At least it gives them a much needed break from Camp Spaz. I am also trying to block out the image of McCluskey still wearing the boot.

CBS Sports considers Albright one of the impact players returning this year.

Tomahawk Nation put together a great breakdown of our offense. I don't think people realize that our offense was middle of the pack within the ACC last year. There is a foundation to improve this year, but it will come down to Tranq and the QB.

The Herald is picking up on the freshmen's potential. Also, don't forget about the redshirt guys that will be playing for the first time too. The Milford Daily also wrote a piece about the OLine. Why don't these smaller town papers cover BC more during the season?

BC, BU and FSG held a press conference regarding the outdoor game set for January 8. Fans who go to Mobile for the GMAC bowl should be back to Boston in time!

Although we will probably be a Top 25 team, the basketball version of College Gameday won't be coming to the Heights this season.
