BU bounces BC from Hockey East Tourney

When BU tied the game up late in the 3rd, I had a bad feeling about OT. However, BC looked great in the extra time. They generated more shots, the penalty kill was great (and generated some O) and they were controlling everything. Yet it just took a little scramble in front to end it all. The bad guys won 4-3 (highlights below).

The BC release mentions the team waiting for selection show on Sunday, but many pundits think BC is out. Keep your fingers crossed.

Up and down day for BC Hockey

The BC Women had another dominant season end short of a championship. This time losing to Ohio State in the NCAA quarterfinals. Sometimes facing a hot goalie at the wrong time is all it takes. I feel for the seniors who were part of this great run. I also feel like this level of success will result in multiple championships soon. It is just about things going right at just the right time.

Fortunately the Men's team is still alive. They eliminated Merrimack in Game 2 of the Hockey East opening round and move on to face BU next week at the Garden.

BC bounced from Beanpot

The team came in hot, but it didn't matter once they dropped the puck. The Terriers dominated throughout and went on to a 3-1 victory.

BU controlled early and got the first goal. Meanwhile, BC couldn't muster much offense at all in the first period. It wasn't a huge surprise as BU also won the season's previous matchups. They have more top level talent right now and a little more depth. The hope was that BC would start coming together right about now.

With the loss, BC has to regroup and take on Merrimack Friday and then the Beanpot consultation game against Northeastern on Monday.

BU beats BC again

The Hockey team dropped a second game to BU in three days, losing 3-0 on Monday. It was another defensive game, as BU added a few goals late.

The team gets a chance to snap its current losing streak when they take the ice again on Friday vs UMass.

Hockey drops game to BU and other links

BC lost a defensive battle to BU Saturday. They meet again at BC on Monday night.

Now that the "quiet period" is over, Addazio and his staff are on the road again locking up the verbals.

Former verbal Jason Pinnock sounds like he really loves Pitt. Maybe Addazio can win him, back but it doesn't sound like it.

If you didn't read earlier in the week, Hoffses captured the good and the bad of Addazio's TV work during the National Championship Game.

Women's Basketball lost again.

999 for York

BC added to Jerry York's ever growing list of milestones by beating BU 5-3 Friday night. The win was York's 999th.

The star of the game was Ian McCoshen. He gave BC their go-ahead goal at 4-3 and added an empty netter a minute later. Thatcher Demko was healthy and back in Goal for the Eagles.

The teams return to the ice down the street Saturday. BU seems like a good place to get win 1000.

Battle against ALS continues with Comm Ave Classic

Last summer, the Ice Bucket Challenge went viral in part due to the support of the Boston College community. This summer a different BC alum is keeping the fight against ALS alive. Friday night a group of BC and BU Hockey Legends will square off in the 1st Annual Comm Ave Classic. The brainchild of former BC Hockey Captain Pat Mullane, the game is a fundraiser and a tribute to former BC Assistant SID Dick Kelley.

Obviously the best way you can join the fight is heading down to BU's Walter Brown Arena Friday night. The doors open at 6 PM and the puck drops at 7 PM. Tickets are $10 and all proceeds go to Compassionate Care ALS. If you cannot make it, donations are always a good idea. Of course you can always help a local ALS charity in your area.

It never gets old

Congrats to the Hockey team for beating those guys from down Comm Ave. It was the Freshman who made the difference Friday night.  The next test for the streak is Sunday at Maine.

BC gets past BU in Beanpot Opener

Remember when BU used to dominate the Beanpot? It is getting hard because on Monday BC knocked the Terriers out of the tournament in a 3-1 victory. The final goal was an empty netter that wrapped up the win. BC will go for its fifth straight Beanpot title next Monday against Northeastern. The Huskies crushed Harvard 6-0.

Like so much of our hockey success, I think Beanpot success is becoming so commonplace that we risk taking it for granted. But watching Jack Parker between periods on NESN was a reminder that these runs cannot go on forever. We should cherish this time and relish that we have one of the classiest men in sports leading this program.

Of course another York milestone comes against BU

BU took an early lead in the first only to allow BC to break it open in the Second Period. There was some back and forth in the 3rd, but BC held on to win 6-4. It was Jerry York's 950th win. It also concluded a regular season sweep of the Terriers (obviously the Beanpot is still ahead).

BC takes on Maine Saturday.

Hockey advances despite York's absence

The good news: the Hockey team handled Vermont 4-2 to win the series and advance to the Hockey East Semis. Of course we will face BU in what could be Jack Parker's final game.

The disconcerting news is that Jerry York missed the game with another detached retina. I know nothing about eye issues beyond what you can read on WebMd. BC announced that he will have another surgery on Monday. Can he recover in time for Friday's game against BU? I have no idea. I know we are in good hands with the assistants, but I am not really concerned about the team. I want a speedy and full recovery for York. Keep him in your prayers.

BC wins Beanpot opener and will face BU again

BC smashed Northeastern 7-1 in the first night of the Beanpot. This leaves BC to play BU once again next Monday. With that many goals, there were plenty of highlights including two-short handed goals.

As a reminder next Monday's game doesn't mean anything if BU wins but will be a nice springboard for us if we win another Championship!

BC beats BU, BC loses to BU

The Hockey team salvaged some of their weekend by beating BU 6-1. This game was sort of the reverse of Friday. BU had more shots but couldn't capitalize. Neither team was strong with a man advantage. Congrats also to Goalie Brian Billett for his strong night inbetween the pipes. He saved 40 shots.

Unfortunately we didn't have a perfect day against BU. The basketball team lost to the Terriers 75-61. We had leads and played hard but there are so many problems with turnovers and shot selection. Sunday I will post a snapshot of Donahue's current struggle. I am not worried at all as I think this season will be bad regardless of what we try. But I don't think that Donahue can just forgive all the mistakes as growing pains. We need to get better over the course of the season and need to establish a decent rotation.

Rough start to the weekend: BU wins at Kelley

One thing I like about college hockey is the home and home aspect to much of the scheduling. That way when you lose on Friday -- like BC lost to BU 5-3 -- you have the chance to bounce back the next day.

Friday defined frustration as BC outshot the Terriers but still fell behind 3-0 after two periods. Power plays remain an issue as BC was just 2 for 11 with the advantage.

Saturday night the teams move down the street for another game. It will be the last regular season game between the two.

Weekend roundup

Although we won it football, the weekend was rough on a few other fronts.

First the men's soccer team lost to North Carolina in the ACC Championship Game. They weren't expected to be in the Final, so there was a little bit of playing with house money feeling around the game, but still, you want to win. Next is hopefully a good showing in the NCAA tournament. Selections are announced Monday afternoon.

The Hockey team was red-hot and facing a reeling BU team. Do you want to guess how it played out? The Terriers shutout BC for the first time since 1983. The Hockey team has to bounce back quickly as they face Notre Dame this Friday.

The bright spot of the weekend was the women's soccer team. They advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament by beating Marist.

Beanpot Champs again!

Forget the BU Invitational. BC is once again the Champion of Boston. Credit to Northeastern for giving us all we could handle. The Huskies kept fighting back from our early leads and went ahead in the 3rd. We answered, took the lead and then allowed them to tie and force OT. Jimmy Hayes sealed the deal with his game-winning goal six minutes into OT.

This is BC's 16th Beanpot and our third in four years. In the past winning the Beanpot has been a springboard to big things ahead. Let's hope it brings us luck again this year. Next step: Hockey East Champions!

Sucks2BU: BC advances in the Beanpot

The Beanpot doesn't matter, yet it totally does and we won!!!!! We will face Northeastern next Monday for the Championship.

The game went to overtime and Tommy Cross sealed the victory 3:17 into the extra period.

The signs all pointed to another Classic BU upset at the Beanpot. We scored, they answered. We get momentum and then they score again. We weren't getting the calls. It looked bad. When it went to OT, I assumed it would end with a painful BU goal.

But it didn't. BC now needs to win next Monday to give York yet another trophy.

I am glad the team played well. Beanpot victory years have been sparks leading to Frozen Fours and National Championship. Now let's do it again!

Beanpot time

The Super Bowl is over. Recruiting is over. It's time for the Beanpot and for bandwagon BC hockey fans to start paying attention! We take on BU in the opener. The Terriers are pretty goodish/decent this year. We are better. But as we know, Jack Parker seems to have all the luck in this tournament.

Leave your comments here during the game. I will have my valueless hockey opinions after the game.

Weekend starts off with win over BU

If last weekend was one to forget, this next couple of days is showing more promise. BC beat BU 3-2 Friday night. The win gives BC a sweep of the regular season series. (The two teams will play again in the Beanpot opener.)

BC built an early lead during the first period. BU battled back in the second. Despite a few tense moments in the third, BC held on.

The guys hope to build on the momentum Saturday night against UMass-Lowell.

Run this town tonight

I will have more on the basketball team Sunday, but for now I just give them congratulations. They controlled the pace and scoring and overcame some sloppy play. Plus it was our first win in the new Garden.

The hockey team swept BU this weekend. Ho hum. Sucks to B-U.
