Why do I do this to myself?

When we last saw BC football they were hanging on for dear life on the road against a team that they outclassed in talent and in a game that shouldn't have been as close as its score. A boneheaded play by the opponent's QB gave the game back to the Eagles late in the fourth. Boise. Mt. Pleasant. It is all the same. Terrible game. Just...I don't know...words fail me.

My initial thoughts: Matt Ryan is going to have to carry this team. Ryan Poles and Kevin Sheridan better improve quickly. We'll miss Ryan Glasper. For a team the media likes to call disciplined, we sure make dumb mistakes and draw stupid penalties. Cowardly play calling on both sides of the field.

I'll post my grades after I have begrudingly watched the game a second time (propably this weekend). There were some really good efforts and some really bad ones. This game never should have been this close.

Although it is only the second game of the year, Clemson is really going to make or break this season.

This is you fellow blogger from the CMU blog. And i think that it may be time for you to just admit CMU outplayed you. And if it wasn't for constant bad coaching and play calling we would have fun. We dominated you in the end. We deserved it, you didn't. If you BC fans want to be shocked it was even that close, your wrong. You should be shocked you didn't get the 'L'. I originally said CMU would lose by 3 touchdowns. But it occurred to me during that game that we were just better THAT ONE game. You won off our mistakes. Be thankful.

That was a disgusting outing. Boise redux. Up to this point I was wavering on the "Fire TOB" fence, but now I say, "Can the Focker." We need some fresh blood and better ideas, I mean Central was diagnosing play after play like they had a copy of our playbook! Hats off to the Central players, they did a hell of a job. Brian Kelly should be thankful that he isn't a coach at a big-time school because that high school sh*t he was pulling would have gotten him lynched. Man..still steaming about that dump pass to Palmer late in the game. There are plenty of NFL assistants who would jump at the chance to coach at BC, lets go after one of them. I mean, that's how we got Coughlin and we all know how that turned out.

Bring on the purple horde.

88 yards on the ground against a team that was much smaller? I blame the play calling more than the backs. We had second and 2 at midfield and threw twice. I understand the 8 in the box thing is hard to run against, but then every play should be play action not lining up in a shotgun. Mental errors, complacency, Ryan's IG was an equally dumb play - second and goal, make your reads then through it through the end zone if no one is open.

But really - Kelly should be fired from CMU. Not going for it on 4th and inches early, going for it on 4th and long deep in your own end, silly gimmick plays when you are moving the ball. He made TOB look like Tom Landry.

Long, long way to go before Clemson.

The MAC is not a bad conference and Central Michigan isn't a poor team. Opening weekend is survival. Just win, have no one get hurt and move on.

Everyone improves greatly by game two.

I am not calling for anyone's head yet. You have to look at the whole body of work. CMU was game, but this was still way to close and the lack of killer instinct is going to cost us.

I agree that getting a win out of the opener is important, but at the same time BC suffered and injury to its best player (Ryan) and likely lost Raji due to suspension. Not a great start.

Now BC alums know what it feels like to be an ND alum after a BC / ND game. I mean, you nailed it word for word. Even the CMU guy posting here sounds like he could be straight out of Chestnut Hill responding to some despondent Irish fan. Classic stuff.

This can be broken up into an optimistic and a pessimistic breakdown.

The pessimistic outlook would be BC vs LeFevour: 14-24, BC vs the rest of CMU: 17-0. If not for pickup game caliber receivers, CMU probably wins by 7. If not for some amazing bad coaching decisions, CMU wins by 7. Tough to really compliment much aside from Ryan, Purvis, and Challenger on offense. The defense played in waves, making some good aggressive plays, then finding themselves way out of position for a series. Discipline is clearly an issue. Special teams as well. How can you let a fake FG work in that situation? Clearly "special". Had Brian Kelly realized that his backup QB could carry the team, maybe he calls a different game.

The optimistic outlook would be that BC led a feisty MAC team on the road 31-10, the offense was vanilla and didn't give Clemson much along the lines of patterns or deficiencies. Everybody was catching the ball and Ryan didn't make a single "bad decision", though the dump of to Palmer was weak. Plus, he gutted through a tough game where the plan was clearly to air it out. The defensive plan was geared toward a different QB and was exploited by an athletic QB. The coaching staff should be able to get everyone more motivated for next week.
