Basketball Previews: How far can Tyrese Rice carry this team?

This will be an important year for BC basketball. Skinner has to mix his most touted recruiting class with one of his thinnest rosters of returning, productive players. I'll take quick glances at the new and old faces as the season approaches.

RETURNING PLAYER

Tyrese Rice, G, 6'1

Rice has shown that he can score and make tough baskets with the game on the line. This season he needs to do even more. He'll be the focal point for our team and the focus of all of our opponents.

Strengths: Great shooter. Can get to the basket and create his own shot.

Questions: Can he get others involved in the offense? Can he improve defensively?

Outlook: Al has won with one-man shows before (Troy Bell). But I don't think Rice has enough of Bell's size or skill set to single-handedly carry this team to the NCAA Tournament. I expect teams to hang on him physically and try to wear him down and keep him from starting the offense. He'll need to get the ball to our other scorers. If Rice is one of the top scorers in the ACC, we'll be OK. Ironically if he is one of the top scorers in the country, I think it will mean he is not getting any help and BC is struggling. Let's hope it is the former.

anyone notice that the number #4 is special for BC?

#1 Craig Smith
#2 Troy Bell
#3 Jared Dudley
#4 Tyrece Rice

Coincidence or destiny?

great comment on the #4!

it's nice to see craig smith do well in the NBA as he transitions into his 2nd season. he's stuck behind ryan gomes right now, but he has always proved that he can be productive in his minutes played. hopefully the same can be said of jared dudley. i know he played during garbage time, but we gotta give him credit for recording a double-double in only his second game as a pro! there's no let up in that guy.

as for troy bell, i can only shake my head. it's a shame that the big east's leading scorer didn't amount to much on the pro level.

I had the treat of coming to BC as the class of '04 to see Troy's breakout season at the Heights. His biggest problem tranlating his game to the NBA level is his lack of size to play the 2 spot. He played great in the preseason when he was still in the league. It's too bad he couldn't catch on as a sharpshooter off the bench.
