Matty's ability to bounce back

Despite being a team game, the QB gets much of the attention in football. Things can be going very well, yet a few mistakes from your Quarterback can leave you in a real hole. Conversely, a great gunslinger can make everything look better. Coming off a sub par performance, BC needs Matt Ryan to bounce back and play well against Maryland. He's done a pretty good job of shaking off rough outings before. Take a look.

Syracuse 2004
In a loss that wasn't really his fault, redshirt freshman Ryan (filling in for the injured Paul Peterson) went 24-51 for 200. He also had 3 INTs.
Next game: Ryan came off the bench in the Tire Bowl to help beat UNC. He only threw two passes (connecting on 1) but the way he played and reacted were a good indicator that the Syracuse game wasn't going to haunt him.

NC State 2006
In a loss where BC couldn't get much going offensively Ryan threw what proved to be a costly INT on a BC drive in NC State territory. He went 13-25 for 149 yards.
Next game: BC went conservative (and Ryan was still taking it easy on his ankle) in a win over Maine. Ryan connected on 15 of 26 passes for 182 yards.

Wake Forest 2006
In a performance eerily similar to the Florida State game, Ryan went 40-57 for 402 yards and 2 INTs. One of the picks was in the endzone and cost BC precious points.
Next game: Another win and another cautious performance. Ryan went 23 for 37 for 219 yards.

Miami 2006
BC needed to win to keep hopes of an ACC title alive. Miami handcuffed Ryan. He was under pressure all night and went 17-34 for 169 and 1 INT.
Next game: The first loss that Ryan followed with another off day. He went 20-29 for 242 yards and 2 INTs against the Mids. BC did pull out the improbable win thanks to the defense.

What can we learn? After the Iceman gets hit, he usually goes conservative and plays within himself. That might be just what the doctor ordered this weekend. Maryland thrives on mistakes. BC and Ryan have enough in the arsenal not to force things or try to make the big plays.

I don't know if we can compare this year with those other situations - but of course our 17 graduated seniors were all there.

I was at each of the losses at NC State, Wake Forest and Miami last year. It seems as though we fell into a (predictable) trap in each of those games.

After the NC State loss, we played Maine; after the WF loss we played Duke; and after the Miami loss - well, we all know what happened. At the time I blamed TOB and his staff for not getting the players prepared and/or not devising a good game plan - and certainly not adapting during those games. NC State and Miami should have been clear victories, and we could have beaten Wake Forest.

After the FSU loss this year, we are playing a much better team, even if they have lost some games recently. This is Senior Day (Night) at Maryland. They will be sky high early.

They lost to WVU and Clemson by two touchdowns - but they definitely could/should have beaten WF, Virginia and UNC.

Maryland is a 4 and 5 team that could be a 7 and 2 team. If we don't come in highly energized and mad about last Saturday, we are inviting a closer game than we want or need.

The difference between winning and losing in this league or throughout Major College Football is a fine line - a few key plays here and there.

Let's get it done, BC - we're with you and we're proud.

On another note, I detest poor fan behavior, poor sportsmanship and outrageous insults, etc.

I live in Columbia, SC now (Brookline, MA native)and I have been to an ACC BC-Clemson game. Many of my golf friends are Clemson grads - their hospitality has always been pretty darn good as far as I can see. I guess there are idiots everywhere, but let's make this an issue and address this bad behavior. We are a nationally recognized institution - let's act that way. If we see poor behavior, we have to stand up and address it as it happens.

I am an absolute fanatic, but I would not hurl insults at an opponent - especially using religion or regional insults, etc (Southern Hicks). The Clemson fans who travel to Boston are captains of industry, Partners in Law firms and business leaders with their families. I know - I play golf with them and I make suggestions about what to do, and see and where to eat while they are in Boston. I'm very angry that a student would hurl insults at such people. They are the adults paying the tuition for these students for crying out loud. Who looks stupid?

Let's do everything we can to stop this. I am using Clemson as an example - this goes for every team and their fans - welcome them to Boston and cheer against them correctly (maybe WVU excluded - they're brutal and deserve no respect :))

In 2005 after we lost to VT, we went to Chapel Hill and lost to a UNC Team that was not as good as we were. Once again TOB and his staff seemed to get lulled into a trap and NEVER ADAPTED - until it was too late. I was at that game as well, and very unhappy with the coaching staff.

This game against Maryland will tell us a lot about Coach Jags' approach.

BJK, absolutely with you on the fan behavior. I'm quite sure, as most people here are asserting, that they're a minority, but they'll be even more so if someone stands up to them when they're acting like schmucks. When I was at BC, it seems the school was attracting a fair share of these types, but fortunately that trend seems to have stalled in recent years. 20 years from now, I still want to be proud of my answer when someone asks where I went to school.

Tough to compare these games against what is going to happen on Saturday. Logan wasn't calling the shots for these games. In Logan we trust.
