Mutually Assured Destruction

There are no winners in this. Just a bunch of losers. Both parties are leaking their respective sides. Few will ever know the true ”he said, he said.” I would love to release a detail-by-detail rehash that captured who was lying to whom and who said what when and promises kept and promises made. After piecing together what I know, the reality was much more simple and unfortunately, much more human. Two once good friends let ego, power, money and ambition corrupt a very good situation. It escalated very quickly. Deception was not the issue. Hurt feelings, pride and of course, money were. It could have been saved through early Sunday night, but once things went public, it was over.

I hope Jags gets the NFL Head Coaching job he longed for and comes out ahead from all this. He’s got a very nice family and his power play just turned their lives upside down.

I hope Gene makes a perfect hire. I hope we get the national-championship winning lifer we’ve all longed for. But the reality is his power play just blew up a good thing (that he himself put together) over minor issues.

I will continue to defend Jags’ right to advance his career and continue to thank him for two great years.

I will have more on our new coach, the future of the program and opinions on the news of the day as they play out. Now I just feel depressed.

I agree with Jags' right to advance his career. If he wants to be an NFL head coach, good for him. I want BC to have a coach who is talented enough to coach in the NFL.

However, if Jags has lost interest in recruiting (as has been reported) or he was seeking other NFL jobs (as has been reported), than I support GD in his stance.

Ultimately, Boston College stands to lose the most from this.

I hope GD opens up the search - interview Spaz, Logan, etc., but take a good look at some other candidates (whether it's London, Fullmer, Kelly) and see who views BC as a destination (for a decent amount of time) and not a two-year rest stop.

EEI or ESPN Radio carrying the conference?

I really think you are very wrong to defend Jags. He is wrong!

He lied what is so hard to see about this.

If you got high paying, high powered job and lied to your boss and stock holders you would be fired too! Or worse!

I like Jags, but he obviously didn't want to be at BC anymore so I'm glad he will be officially removed at the 3 pm conference. If this would have happened a few weeks ago my first pick for a darkhorse candidate would have been Turner Gill (UB head coach). I am biased since I am from the Buffalo area, but he has done wonders to the program, is well spoken, his players love him, and you can tell he genuinely loves the game (his post-conference championship on-field interview actually choked me up a bit). However, he just re-upped with UB for a few more years so I doubt he is going anywhere (at least this offseason). Since Whipple was so high on the list last year why hasn't his name been brought up again? What is he up to?

Vincent, what makes you so certain he lied to anyone other than the first reporter who contacted him? All the reports that are coming out now indicate he never lied to Gene.

Chairman, which reports are those? I find it hard to believe that an experienced AD such as Gene went on record saying that Jags was our coach without some sort of assurance to that effect from the coach himself. It's also hard to believe that the topic never came up between Gene and Jags previously, especially during the initial interview (which took place after the departure of the annual resume-floater, TOB). Recall that Jags got the job based largely on his interview-- what do you think he was saying at that time about the length of his tenure?

On the contrary, the latest reports I've seen were that Gene found out about the Jags interview through the media!

I think Jags should have a right to advance his career too...after he fulfills his contract, or at least until he coached another year. Yes, he's a good coach and prior to this I was a big supporter, but how can you bail on a program after only 2 years, especially when GDF went out on a limb to make you a HC?!? Not to mention the fact that he's also bailing on all the kids he recruited to this point, as well as his staff. Completely selfish move, and kind of dumb considering he's no shoe-in for the job he's interviewing for!

An unfrozen caveman lawyer could have drafted a better contract than what these boneheads put together.
