Post bowl stuff and other links

Most of the bowl article focused on Vandy winning their first bowl since 1955. This article correctly focused on Vandy's special teams advantage.

The basketball team won their last tune up prior to ACC play.

Nashville businesses had a nice postgame boost from Vandy fans.

Brennan Williams is at the Army All America game. Word on the street is that he is headed to UNC.

This was an ignominious end to BC's bowl win streak, and it will likely cost us some recruits. We had nothing to win in this game, and a little to lose, and it showed in the team's play. Out coached and out played when it mattered. The roughing call was horrendous and we had them stopped, definitely gave Vandy the win.

Losing the ACC title game to the same team 2 years in a row and then dropping a nothing bowl game to a bad team could be a turning point for the worse for the program. Davis needs to be off the depth chart. Despite making 3 good passes and some plays with his legs, he is a liability. If he's the man next year, we will probably not be in a bowl game.

Oh well, go Hoops and go Hockey, goodbye 2008!

I woke yesterday morning with a pounding headache and the cold sweats. I did not know if it was from my NYE festivites or the nightmare I had that we lost to Vanderbilt. Oh wait...we really did lose to a 6-6 team.

Hmmm....Time for a recap and I can't hold back.

Here are my thoughts:

1. From the start the team looked lethargic. Even during warmups, the team looked disengaged.

2. Why did Davis look like this was this his first football game ever?

3. Why did Logan not run the ball more?

4. Why did we not prepare another player on the team with prior QB experience to take snaps during practice just in case Davis had a meltdown??????

Conclusion:

Jag's grace period is over. Two back-to-back ACCCG losses and then a loss to a 6-6 Vandy team is unacceptable. I couldn't help but chuckle when I read Thomas Jones critique of Brett Favre's behavior in the Jets locker room and Mangini's interaction with him. I wonder if this was what Jags did in Green Bay with Favre. He let Favre run the offense and Jags just sat back hoping not to piss off the QB and futer HOFer. Or maybe this is Jags coaching philosophy - no matter how bad the QB is doing or the team just leave them alone...they will eventually get the hang of it.

Sorry Jeff.....this is not how football runs.

Re: The Future of BC Football

Good Morning Coach,

I hope that you had a great plane ride back to Boston and had a great new years with your family.

Two days after our bowl streak was broken, it is now time to ask you some honest questions about the season and the future of BC football.

First, we, the fans and alum, recognize that this was a difficult season. It is hard to replace Matt Ryan. He is one of the best BC QBs, some might say better than Father Flutie, and has made an immediate impact in the NFL. Injuries hurt the team, there is no doubt about that. You made the best of a rough situation and got us back to the ACCCG for the second time.

That said, we were quite disappointed with the loss to VTech in the ACCCG and the most recent collapse against Vandy. We have seen a change in the team in these two games. They just did not seem prepared or ready to play. This is something that we have not seen in a long time. Quite possibiley since TOB's 2nd or 3rd season at the Heights.

Jeff, it is now time for you to make some crucial decisions. Two consecutive losses in the ACCCG and the end of our bowl streak will hurt our ability to recruit. I feel that we are entering into a dark period of BC history. I think it is time for you to make some crucial decisions.

Now is the time for you to part with Steve Logan. From ECU to NFL Europe, he only causes problems. Get rid of the bum. He hurt your team the last two games with his offense. Don’t say that he is the reason for the success with Matt Ryan last year, Matt Ryan is the best player to ever come from the Heights so he would have driven that team to the ACCCG with TOB at the helm or Dan Henning. He had no plan against Vandy or VTech. He let you and us down. Get rid of him, bring in someone younger.

Please get rid of Dominque Davis. This guy does not represent BC student-athletes. No matter what the situation, our athletes give 110%... no matter what the situation is. Davis gave us nothing during the ACCCG and admitted it. He is D-III material. Please give Tuggle the job next year or bring in a JUCO transfer (ie. Paul Peterson).

Finally, if you think the job is too big too handle or if you are going to eventually use the TOB line that you took the team as far as you can go after 8 shitty bowls or no one cares about BC football in Boston, then please just resign right now. We don’t need false hope that you will deliver us to Zion when you only keep getting lost in the Sinai.

Best Regards,

Concerned BC Alum

the dark period? god you people are idiots. these have been two of the better years in the program's history. they lost a meaningless bowl game. teams come out flat in bowl games all the time. it was an exhibition game. get a freaking grip. sucks we lost to VT in ACCCG, but TOB never would have gotten us there. and when you consider we were in that game despite injuries to Crane, Megwa, Toal, Albright, Akins etc., its truly a great achievement. Jags has been a godsend to this program. I have no confidence at all that TOB would have taken us to either ACCCG. you guys are so freaking delusional.

CT said...

That was absurd.

The jury is out on Davis. Logan has proven himself. Jags...so far, so good.

All losing a road game to a 6-6 team has done has been to re-emphasize just how much a good QB can do for a team. Both tangibly and intangibly.

We just suffered from bad timing, that's all. Ryan graduated a year early. Losing 5 starters didn't help, either.

I was upset with the loss (a freakish punt turned out to be the deciding factor...and the crappy roughing the passer penalty), but let's keep some perspective.

The jury has made their decision on Davis and he is done.

Davis can NEVER be an effective QB because he will ALWAYS have doubts because of his performance in these last two games.

If in two years, he was the starter and led us back to the ACCCG he would choke under the pressure of the game and his past performances.

Davis is the poor mans Chris Simms.

Adam M. said...

OK, i'm sorry, but some of you people on here are a little bit delusional. Do you really think Billy Flutie was a better option? The guy completed one pass on a fake field goal and now all of a sudden he's better than Davis? Stop looking at the last name. I honestly don't think Davis will be or can be any worse than Chris Crane was at the beginning of next year. He had the task of facing probably three of the toughest defenses in the country in Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, and Vanderbilt. Those teams can make anyone look bad. We saw what Wake has done to some teams all year, we saw what VT did to Cincy last night, and Florida was the only team to score more than 24 points on Vanderbilt this season. All of these teams have solid defenses. You have to cut the guy some slack, he's a redshirt freshman for God's sake. It's much to early to decide if he's the future of the program or if he's a bust, but right now you just have to be patient with him. I honestly think this bowl loss could have a silver lining - do any of you guys really think that Herzy will want his last game at BC to be a disappointing lost against Vandy, with him committing what many consider to be the decisive penalty? (though I think that was a BS call) Honestly, we're getting virtually our entire secondary back (minus Paul Anderson), our two running backs, one of our best WRs in Gunnell back, and most of our O-Line back. I see nothing but improvement from this team next year, though their record may not indicate it with the rest of the ACC improving as well.

Brookline, I really hate to make ad hominem attacks on blogs, but you are an idiot. Saying "Davis will never be an effective QB" is just dumb. Do I personally think that he will be our starter next year or that he will be an all-ACC QB? Actually, no. But could he? Of course. The kid is 19 years old and has a lot of growing up ahead of him. Michael Robinson at Penn State never looked like he'd be more than a decent running back and he got PSU to a BCS bowl his senior year...as the QB. It does happen. Also, you don't know this kid and don't know how this experience will affect him long turn. Don't pretend to. And two losses - at the end of a great two season run - do not mean that Logans or Jags need to go.

I hope you enjoy bashing a 19 year old kid because I'm guessing you got cut from you high school football team. You sound exactly like the type living vicariously through others. I've always had a small piece of pride in that BC wasn't like the football factory schools where the alumni and boosters didn't delve into players' personal lives and write ridiculous attack letters, but I guess I was wrong.

Really, 2 ACC championship appearances are a bust? Why don't you ask Miami, FSU, Clemson, or any of the other 10 teams who didn't make it if they'd like to be in our shoes. Go ask an Miami fan if they'd liked to have gotten this opportunity. BC has been in the top 3 (still think GT was better this year) of the ACC the last three years after being a nobody on the college football scene for so long. I would hardly call this the dark ages. If you expect NCs every year, maybe you should have gone to Florida.

So it was ok to bash Chris Crane in September and October but now in January we cannot bash Davis who was the QB.....Come on let us be fair here. In September, we were calling for Crane's head and we thought Davis was the second coming of Doug Flutie.

Then, we get our wish...sickly...which was for Crane to disappear and for Davis to play. Our wish was granted and now we can't even criticize him for playing worse than Crane????

What exempts Davis from the blame and hatred we had for Crane?

At the end of the day, Crane and Davis had the same amount of NCAA D-1 starts.

I'm with NorCal. While I don't think DD is going to be a great BC quarterback, he is still young. Who is on this "jury" you speak of? Yes, he played poorly, but he is not the complete reason BC lost that game. Dropped passes, costly penalties, the freak P. Anderson play (it would have been nice if he made an attempt to communicate with Harris that the ball hit him) and solid FG/special teams by Vandy were also responsible.

Consider this: Matt Ryan started one of the most important BC games of the past 15 years. A win would have not only earned BC a BCS berth, it was also the last year the school got to pocket all of the BCS money ($14 mill or so) as opposed to divvying it up with the rest of the conference. The game? Syracuse. The result? An embarassment. Pitt ended up going to the BCS instead and lost to Utah. Matt Ryan? He turned out okay didn't he?

I'm sure as heck not saying DD is the next Matt Ryan. But he is still young and, like Ryan, couldn't help it if the senior QB ahead of him got injured...

That being said, I hope Tuggle shows us something more in the Spring.

And as far as the Jags/Logan comment after what they have done the past two years, patently absurd.

I think there's some hypocrisy going on here. Here is the basic flow:

1. Angry fans state their opinions.

2. Brookline12 captures the emotion and mindset from the angry posts, and then extrapolates it/ rephrases a statement and forms a second opinion, which is in line with #1.

3. Angry fans are offended and outraged that Brookline12 would say such a thing.

I can't tell you how many people posted out of anger and frustration about Crane. Or how many people almost violently wanted Davis or FLUTIE to step in at quarterback.

Or how many people thought the sky was falling after the ACCCG loss and missed BCS berth. Or how many people thought the world was ending after the Music City Bowl.

And then Brookline12 says something in the same vein of earlier opinions, and all of a sudden people get upset.

I think a bunch of posters would rather be upset than happy. Maybe it's regional.

Good thing the 11-5 Patriots missed the playoffs, so now we have something else to cry about.

Beantown: Looking at this thread only, only one other poster (EinE) has really stated anything that agreed with Brookline's views or that Brookline built on. And I actually don't disagree with much of EinE had to say. However, to say that Brookline is saying the same thing is highly disingenuous. EinE: "[Davis] is a liability". At this point, true and I agree with the sentiment that the current edition of Davis will not lead us to a bowl next year. Brookline: "Davis can NEVER be an effective QB". Do you see how these are similar, but certainly not identical statements and how agreeing with one does not mean I necessarily agree with the other?

Also, Brookline is the only one here - and one of the very few on this site - openly calling for Jags to be fired. I highly disagree with this sentiment. Brookline also has a displaced sense of nostalgia for TOB (eg, the team always showed up to play for the last seven years of TOB; cases against: Syracuse 2004, Pitt 2003, NC State 2006, UNC 2005) that I believe clouds the interpretation of Jags' growing process as a head coach, as well as the excellent coaching that Jags and Logan have done. Because the Sinai that Jags and Logan keep getting lost in is a Promised Land that TOB and Bible never got us to.

I am one of Brookline's more vehement opponents, but Brookline is not the only poster I disagree with. However, Brookline makes statements that are more extreme and (I believe, intentionally) inflammatory than other posters. At the same time, I admit that I was wrong about Crane, but that complaining about Crane (lack of upside and production) is not the opposite of not complaining about Davis (lack of production). I never thought the sky was falling after the ACCCG or the bowl. I try to not post negatively about the team on this blog because usually it's said best by others and because I'm a glass half-full kind of guy. It doesn't mean that I don't see the same problems that others do or that I'm hopelessly naive. It just means that my opinions lay elsewhere.

Boyd,

I'm laughing so hard there are tears flowing down my cheeks. "Ryan can NEVER be an effective QB." Classic. I don't agree with much of what Brookline12 had to say in his corporate memo, but you have to give him credit for energizing what has been a rather dispassionate BC fandom. I'm glad to finally see a little passion out of this group.

I believe every coach deserves at least 4 years before they are judged. This allows them to get their own players in and their system established. While I am disappointed that we have had 2 shots to get to the BCS level and failed, the fact is BC was not supposed to compete this year according to the "experts." Add in some critical injuries, including losing a QB that was starting to get on a roll, and you have to conclude this was an amazing coaching job by Jags.

Were mistakes made? Yes, but every young coach makes a few mistakes. Heck, look at Beamer's record his first few years (granted, he was in a turnaround situation while Jags entered a success-sustaining program).

I caution everyone regarding next season. No matter what, we will be starting a QB with limited game experience or one with no game experience. We have to replace the run-stoppers on our defense and there are no comparable players to fill the holes. We may lose 6-7 games next season. Don't call for Jags head. See how he does in 2010, when he has 4 years under his belt and he can be fairly judged.
