HD stepping up BC coverage and other links

HD posted a feature on Kuechly and has had a few different notes on BC lately including Phil Steele links (1 and 2). Congrats to Heather for keeping things up with a new baby, I know from experience babies interrupt blogging. Now someone needs to remind me again why the Globe and Herald can't produce the same volume of content as HD? One other note: I plan on getting my copy of Phil Steele this weekend and will post my thoughts after reading it.

I was whining about Donahue's 2010 recruiting yesterday, so I should note that he added another body to the 2011 class. Let's hope something breaks soon for this summer.

Green Bay is using the spring to shuffle around all their BC players. Raji is moving to NT and Blackmon is moving to safety.

On the football recruiting front, BC is targeting Florida DE Clay Burton.

Even with a new TV partner, the ACC is likely to continue its Sunday Night Hoops package.

This column from ACC writer Ken Tysiac has been making the rounds. Tysiac is anti-expansion as we all should be. The current ACC configuration is ideal. We should only consider expansion if our hands are forced. Until then lock in the current partners.

ATL -- I am looking forward to your review of Steele's preseason ALL ACC team and BC review.

As Steele notes, we've got talent at BC -- more all ACC players than Clemson and FSU! As HD says "Miami and North Carolina have five players each on the first team. But guess what? Boston College has five, too. So much for the argument that the Eagles play with lesser talent"

Here is Steele's preseason All ACC team:

OFFENSE

QB Christian Ponder, Florida State
RB Ryan Williams, Virginia Tech
RB Montel Harris, Boston College
WR Donovan Varner, Duke
WR Leonard Hankerson, Miami
WR Greg Little, North Carolina
TE George Bryan, NC State
C Sean Bedford, Georgia Tech
OG Rodney Hudson, Florida State
OG Thomas Claiborne, Boston College
OT Anthony Castonzo, Boston College

OT Orlando Franklin, Miami

DEFENSE

DE Robert Quinn, North Carolina
DT Marvin Austin, North Carolina
DT Jarvis Jenkins, Clemson
DE Allen Bailey, Miami
LB Luke Kuechly, Boston College
LB Alex Wujciak, Maryland
LB Quan Sturdivant, North Carolina
CB Ras-I Dowling, Virginia
CB Brandon Harris, Miami
SS DeAndre McDaniel, Clemson
FS Deunta Williams, North Carolina

SPECIALISTS

K Matt Bosher, Miami
P Ryan Quigley, Boston College
KR Torrey Smith, Maryland
PR Greg Reid, Florida State

The only real surprise here is Quigley. If you look at the 2009 stats, there are other ACC punters with better averages who are still in the league

PUNTING Cl G No. Yards Long Avg.
1. Brent Bowden-VT SR 13 57 2495 60 43.8
2. Matt Bosher-UM JR 13 51 2169 59 42.5
3. Chandler Anderson-GT SO 14 37 1565 63 42.3
4. Shawn Powell-FS SO 13 43 1790 64 41.6
5. Ryan Quigley-BC SO 13 77 3145 61 40.8
6. Grant Schallock-NC JR 13 65 2621 55 40.3
7. Jimmy Howell-VA SO 11 66 2647 53 40.1
8. Nick Ferrara-MD FR 12 35 1392 61 39.8
9. Kevin Jones-DU JR 12 54 2120 59 39.3
10. Dawson Zimmerman-CU SO 13 55 2153 55 39.1

But Quigley is a very good positional punter and BC was #3 in lowest net punt return yards last year, and Quigley is the main reason for that success.

Quigley really is a key player on the team: with our rotten 3rd down conversation rate/anemic offense, we punted more than every other ACC team -- 77 times compared to the next highest of 66 punts by a very bad offense at UVA and 65 punts by offensively challenged UNC.

Remember this LB recruit? BC was in the mix right 'til the end before going to Gainsville. Would be a great pickup, expecially if healthy.

mod,

Field position didn't really lend itself much to booming punts. When he had the room he had the leg. I think you're right, the reason he's preseason first-team is first for his accuracy and secondly for his distance when necessary and appropriate.

I thought we might be hurting with our punts after Ayers graduated, especially seeing Twigley's frosh yr when he kind of stood out to me as a shanker. But he's rounded into form nicely. Much better/sooner than I expected.
