Why don't we look more like Oregon?

Chip Kelly is changing the face of college football. His team is scoring more and faster than anyone else in the sport. Three thousand miles away we struggle getting a first down and cannot effectively run a two-minute drill. Why does this matter? Because outside of Oregon and UNH there is no other staff in football that has as much working experience with Kelly as BC does!

When I first mentioned the UNH clique my hope was that Spaz would emulate Sean McDonnell and Mike Belotti and empower his assistant to maximize BC's talent on offense. So far that isn't happening.

I understand that assistants aren't always able to emulate and replicate their mentors style and strategy. But I don't believe Sean Devine and Ryan Day have been given much of a chance. I don't think Spaz will ever change course midseason, but he needs to do some serious evaluation of his staff and team this offseason. He has guys who had front row seats to the cutting edge. I don't care if they themselves haven't proved it. Handing things over to them is no risk. What is the downside: losing by 40 instead of 20?

Doesn't matter when you have an ancient O-coordinator. This team will do nothing exciting with old Man Tranquill calling plays. His time has clearly passed. He goes in with a (usually terrible) game plan and never makes any adjustments.

Devine's been so awesome with the offensive line that he's clearly earned more responsibility.

Or not.

Are you calling for BC to allows its assistants to maximize BC's offensive talent or to have them implement the same kind of system as Kelly? If it's the latter, there are a few problems. Oregon has athletes (i.e., players that are extremely fast and quick) to pull off their offense. UNH, compared to the rest of the FCS, is in a similar position. BC does not have the athletes at any skilled offensive positions to run a similar offense. BC cannot run any system that even remotely looks like Oregon's because of the obvious huge talent gap.

So it's settled then. BC can drop down to the FCS level and all will be right with the world.

Bravesbill - Let me guess your first word in life: "NO."

Ha! You are such an idiot!

Gogo--Do you have any clue what you're talking about? I'm all for Spaz's assistants to take over and develop schemes that are tailored to their athletes. However, copying a system like Oregon's is foolish because we have no speed at any of the skilled offensive positions.

Bravesbill. i disagree with you. Many variations of the spread offense exist with less than elite athletes. In fact Northwestern has been running a successful spread offense with much less atheletic players than what we have.

There are many versions of the spread offense yes. However, Oregon uses their own pistol version that Kelly got from Nevada which is more run based and gets people in space. I have no problem with a spread offense, just don't use a similar version to Oregon's.
