"The Man In The Red Bandanna" wins Sports Emmy

Monday night at the Sports Emmys, ESPN's "Outside the Lines" team won the Emmy for Long Feature for their story on "The Man Behind the Red Bandanna." A special thanks should go to the Crowther family for sharing their story with the world. I also think we should thank ESPN Producer Drew Gallagher (BC '99) for his work on the project. Drew advocated Welles's story for many years and then brought it to air last fall.

It was posted on another site that no player from Massachusetts was drafted for the 3rd year in a row. Jordan Todman was taken in last year's draft.

Congrats to ESPN, the Crowthers, Drew Gallagher, and, of course, Welles and his ever lasting legacy of courage, sacrafice and service to others.

As I noted here last Spetember, when I think of Welles saving people, guiding them down the stairs to safety, but then doing an about face in the stair well to climb back up to save others, climbing upward in the Tower, high above the earth, up toward to beautiful blue sky above, I think of a young WWII hero, John Gillespe Magee, a fighter pilot and poet whom died serving others at 19.

Here is Magee's famous poem:

"High Flight"

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth

And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth

of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things

You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung

High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,

I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung

My eager craft through footless halls of air....

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue

I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.

Where never lark, or even eagle flew —

And, while with silent lifting mind I have trod

The high untrespassed sanctity of space,

- Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
------

Indeed, I am sure that when Welles touched the face of God, God touched a beautiful soul wrapped in a Red Bandanna

If you want a weird story that actually involves The Crowthers and don't mind getting mad...check out "The woman who wasn't there".

BCMike. I checked it out. Fascinating story about a woman who claims to be a WTC survivor, who was saved by Welles, who claims she could smell her own flesh buring, who made these claims for 6 years... But then the NYT found out she was a total fraud. Here is a mini video on the topic. http://youtu.be/UfYQfeLuSrQ
