Sentiment might drive the vote towards Welles in honor of Welles Crowther, but I don't love the idea. I also have no idea how the Crowther family would feel about it. My apprehension about naming a bird after Crowther is that I am not sure the association is worthy of our 9/11 hero. Does it trivialize what he did to have a bird on our sideline using his name? I know the same argument could be made about Ignatius, but his death is not as raw or close to home as Crowther's. I also hope that someone from BC has reached out to the family to get their blessing regardless of how the vote goes.

i like Aquila the best. Latin for Eagle, was the bird which carried thunderbolts for Zeus in mythology. rhymes with "Tequila" so the student band could play the song 'Tequila' and everyone could shout "AQUILA". i think it hits all the elements. would rank Iggy #2.

Thank you, ATL. I had these sentiments exactly and wasn't sure the right way to express them that would come off as possibly offensive or crass, especially given yesterday's significance.
Welles should have the Lax field named after him, not a mascot.
I worry about the Crowther family though if we do this. When the time comes that the Eagle leaves us for Blue-Er skies, could that re-open wounds for them?
PS - I think Aquila has the least connection to BC as any of these names. It just makes no sense, and it is also the top search item if you google "cool names for an Eagle." We're better than that. Plus it also sounds like a giant lizard (aka a gila monster). BC is not THAT latin...

I would agree that naming the eagle after Welles may not the most appropriate.
In terms of honoring Welles, I'm not sure why BC doesn't make the home football game closest to 9/11 the "Red Bandanna" Game every year. At that game they can hand out red bandannas to every spectator (which I am sure some business would be happy to sponsor) and honor him and the other alumni lost on 9/11 at halftime.
UCF did such a nice job on the 10 year honoring him, and we do something similar for Jay McGillis with the Spring game, so it seems like a no brainer to me. Interested in thoughts.

You've taken quite a leap in logic. Why don't you add that I am probably against eating animal meat, against animal testing, and believe the law should require every parking lot have chipmunk-friendly (slanted) curbs.
Eagles are not domesticted animals like a dog or horse. They are the epitome of a wild animal, a predator, a raptor, a bird of prey.
If a sense of morality does not move BC, consider the legal aspects:

So we are taking an injured captive eagle, stressing the SH*T out of it in front of 40,000 loud fans, placing it in a 100% alien environment, and hoping for the best. (again) Really, Brad Bates?

the Eagle flies before the game, right? so we are talking about like 15-25k fans, few of whom are talking about conversation level.
its not like BC just found an eagle and is forcing it to fly in circles, Zoo New England is the organization tasked with eagle maintenance. if they are OK with renting out the services of the eagle, so be it.
The eagle is a resident of the local zoo and effectively gets lent to BC for game days.
He isn't flying around the stadium like Margo did. He is merely there for a photo op for fans before the game. Lets not get ahead of ourselves.
With all that said, I like Ignatius, but would rather not shorten it.

I'm not sure what the story is on our live Eagle, but I'm sure there is some back story as to how and why Zoo New England has him, beyond educational purposes.
Note - if someone can find the backstory on our 9 year old, fill me in, please!
What I can talk about is Auburn, who also has a live Eagle before every game, and about the twice the crowd size in attendance - much louder than ours as well. Their eagles come from a "Raptor Rehabilitation Program." What that means is that someone finds them, sick or injured, and they are nursed back to health. Whenever it is possible, they release the birds back to the wild, however, in some instances that can't be done. Either the Eagle just can't adapt back, or fully recover, but in other instances during the rehabilitation process they are "imprinted," or in their fight for survival they become dependent on humans. These are the birds that Auburn then trains for the games and uses for educational purposes (it has a great program from which my sister in law graduated) and game days. These Eagles are physically dependent on the school, as in a life or death manner, not "captives" or pets like dogs...
Of course, if our Eagle doesn't have a similar story, then maybe I would change my mind on it. But right now, I love having it.

"Margo" was a contraction of "Maroon" and "Gold". So the UGA comparison is still valid.
As for gender identification issues, nobody ever cared about Lassie being a male collie. In fact, all the collies who played Lassie were male.

It is performing, I won't argue with that, but I prefer to look at it more as exercising, because I like the concept. It is like me taking my Shepherding dog out to the local farm that lets them run around... even a dependent animal still doesn't lose all of its instincts, perhaps?
