Youth movement

While in Clemson, I heard that some of the older players are unhappy with playing time. Then there was some grumbling on the message boards and in BC fan chatter that the older players are being told to make way for the young guys. Coincidentally, Addazio focused on the young players in his Monday media press conference. Of note:

You saw that Saturday night when we played Aaron Monteiro, for example, at left tackle. He came out. He's a true freshman tackle. Sam Schmal, he redshirted last year, he played; James Hendren, who was redshirted last year, played; Chris Lindstrom, who is a true freshman, has played and has been playing since the beginning. Jon Baker is a sophomore who has played a handful of snaps last year who has really come into his own right now. I just rattled off four or five guys that are freshmen or redshirt freshmen or who are true sophomores with limited experience who we think have great upside. Not to mention some of the guys we haven't broken out yet on the offensive line that we are very excited about. In addition, we have other guys like Ben Glines, who we haven't taken him off yet. I'm not going to say that yet. It's getting late: it's game eight. But you've seen Thaddeus [Smith] play very few snaps last year. He is a sophomore, but he really played very minimally last year and you are seeing him emerge. Elijah [Robinson] is a true freshman. You are starting to see what is happening with him. These are the things that are going on in the flank. You are seeing [Michael] Walker. You saw him on the kickoff return. He is very dynamic guy. Then you saw [us] throw one ball to him down the sidelines and he got behind [the defense]. He has real speed. He is legitimately a fast guy. And you've seen him now. He is playing a dozen offensive snaps plus 10 special teams. He is probably playing 25 snaps per game. Then of course, Jeff [Smith] and of course, you saw Jordan Gowins. I don't remember his exact tally of snaps but he probably touched the ball 10 times or whatever in there. So there are a lot of guys I'm talking about right now. There are an awful lot of guys that are either true freshmen or redshirt freshmen [or] sophomores. Those guys are pretty much the same because almost every sophomore we have out there had almost no snaps last year. And Jake Burt now, the freshman tight end. He has played anywhere between five and 12 snaps a game. Tom Sweeney, who is a redshirt freshman, is playing 60 snaps per game. He is a guy who is really starting to come into his own right now. He is playing a ton of football right now. Those guys are all out there. On defense, you're seeing a lot of [Wyatt] Ray and Ray Smith. Zach Allen. Will Harris. Those are guys that you are seeing. Then you have that sophomore brigade that played last year. Isaac [Yiadom] and Kam [Moore] and Connor [Strachan] and Ty [Schwab].

That is why I am so excited. We're very talented. We are very young, but we are very talented.

Addazio earned a lot of criticism this year, but I have no problem with playing the young players. Contrary to how the older players might feel, I don't view this as throwing in the towel on the season. In fact with regards to the Offensive Line, I think the young guys are looking better each week. The older group we started the year with weren't all that great when they got their shot. If the performance of the young players equals the old, then play the young.

Even with the skill players, I have no problem with guys like Thadd Smith or Robinson being targeted more than some players with more experience.

Who knows? Some of these young guys might provide a spark. If the older players are upset, there is one solution: play better. At this point, I want BC to get three more wins. I don't care if it a a fifth year senior or a kid who just got there leading the way.

what Daz said: "That is why I am so excited. We're very talented. We are very young, but we are very talented."

What Daz really meant: "We're very talented. That is why I am so excited about any other year than this year which is a disaster wrapped in a train wreck. I really want to take the focus off my bad coaching and sell hope, lots of hope. We're very talented on the practice field. We impress the heck out of each other. But as for experience and game-day grit, we got zip. Some of our guys are awful once on the field of battle - Just ask Wade. Oh boy, I should not have said that. We are very young, but we are very talented. really. its true. Again, do not ask me about my bozo coaching this year. I am selling hope and smoke and mirrors. The future could not be brighter, even if the present is a dark unrelenting storm cloud. thank you"

I don't disagree with you that Daz is trying to sugarcoat how terrible things are now and get us excited for next year. But he has been saying for a while now, at least going back to last year, that 2016-2017 is going to be a breakout year. If it's not, then we know what we have.

At this point I can see no good reason to not play the young guys. That's what you do in a rebuilding year.

Saturday, I think we already know what we got. kinda this feeling

But hope does spring eternal. May Daz not be full of it.

Since the older players are just "cannon fodder" for the young, then maybe they all should walk off together. With mod34b, this is an absolute train wreck. This is spiraling into something worse than Spaz. I would like to see Tom Coughlin brought in to straighten out the mess as A.D. This should be his last rodeo with the Giants. Christian Suntrup went away quietly and retained his scholarship. He will graduate in May. Any rebellion and Addazio pulls their scholarship. Comments have already stated how he has given preferential status to Louie without merit. To say the very least, "the bloom is off the rose".

can Willis be named the starting RB? i have no problem with really any other personnel decisions right now. Willis has been running the hardest, without a doubt, since the start of the season. i'm fine with Rouse, Gowins and Outlow all touching the ball here and there, but I see no reason why Willis wouldn't be the featured back who gets 20+ carries a game. he is as good as Hilliman in my opinion.

OL next year will likely have two sophs at the tackles (Schmal and Monteiro), two sophs at the guards (Lindstrom and probably Hendren or Stevens), and a junior at C (Baker). lets all pray that the talent on that unit is as good as Addazio thinks it is.

CT said...

He should be playing the younger guys to get them experience. Absolutely. Clearing out the Spaz recruits with his own as he said takes 5 years. What's the big deal?

Look for Palazzo to break out on the line next year.

Mod, should be on suicide watch.

JBQ should be Suntrup's agent. Get him that Arena Football tryout, JBQ!

Big Jack Krack said...

Wow - when it's stated that plainly, we still have issues next year. Last year we had all 5th year seniors on the OL, in contrast. But other teams survive with younger players.

2017 looks like the year. Oh Boy!

Mod, do you think you fall in the former or the latter?

especially given how this season has gone, it'd be more problematic if he was sticking with upper classmen who have no potential. lets see which of the freshmen and sophs can play

Daz the snake oil salesman. Doing anything and everything to convince Bates and company he just needs more time to turn this around. Guess the older guys just are not his type of "dudes". Nothing worse than a coach who blames the players. Ever hear Bill Belicheck do that even once? Nope. Makes me sick that the vets are being thrown under the bus because he is an awful game coach and obviously hasn't coached any of these guys "up". Half the lemmings will believe this load of dung though and the Daz knows that.

mod34b said...

El Miz . neither.

I think TGS has got it right. very right

Hope i am wrong and Daz wins 4 of next 5. (so, so unlikely ...)

EL MIZ said...

TGS - Addazio is signed through the 2020 season. including the half-season remaining, that is 5.5 years left. he isn't getting fired anytime soon.

also, although it hasn't been discussed, Temple is undefeated and in the top 25. the coach who recruited those upperclassmen? Addazio and Frye (and Day).

TGS said...

If Daz gets credit for Temple, does Spaz get credit for Daz's two bowl games?
Daz lucked out working under best coach in CF (Meyer) and coaching a college QB legend in Tebow. He should have stayed with the mighty Owls of Temple.

Napolean Bonaparte said...

Its all nonsense - young guys versus old guys. Not sure what's the point by our HC. The bottom line is that you play your best players - whether they are seniors or freshman. If his point is that most of our upperclassmen suck, our freshmen are just as good or better, and we should be patient because we'll be really good in three years - then Daz is really grasping at straws and must be worried. He'd be better off spending less time on this amateur PR game and more time with his assistants and players getting ready for the next football game.

Daz is a very consistent guy

The 5 Things That Make Addazio Awful

BY SAVETHEGATORS, ON SEPTEMBER 5TH, 2010

There are many things that keep Steve Addazio from being a good, or even competent offensive coordinator. Here are the five most prominent.

1. Inability to Adjust

Steve Addazio completely lacks the ability to adjust the gameplan as the game goes on.

2. Pass Routes Have No Purpose

When an offensive coordinator sits down to draw up a passing play, every route has a purpose. They may have a slot WR on one side run a short drag and a slot WR on the other side run a deep in, so that a linebacker playing zone in the middle would have to pick which to cover, leaving the other wide open. They may run streaks on the outside with a TE running up the seam in the middle with the intent of exposing the hole in a cover 2 defense. However, I am convinced that this concept is completely lost on Steve Addazio.

3. Inability to Develop Talent

No one has ever done less with more than Steve Addazio. Every player he has coached has underachieved. High school stars will not want to play for Florida much longer, because they know that Addazio will destroy their future.

4. Does Not Use Player’s Strengths

Why is it that Jeff Demps and Chris Rainey, two tiny scatbacks, are always running HB dives up the middle while Emmanuel Moody is always running tosses to the outside? Why is John Brantley running the option and not dropping back to pass?

5. Scared to Throw Downfield

A huge part of Florida’s success under Dan Mullen was that if team’s started to stack the box and play the run, he would punish them by throwing over the top. Florida has got to stretch the field with the vertical passing game to open up the running game and the underneath passing game. They have all the weapons to do it, the only thing holding them back is, you guessed it, Steve Addazio

GP11 said...

JBQ - Suntrup wasn't any good. It's pretty simple. Two coaching staffs and god knows how many coordinators have had the ability to play him if they chose. None did. I think that should be enough evidence there.

This season is not over by any means. At this point what we really need to see is improvement and growth from both the players and the coaches. Daz is absolutely right to start the youth movement. Get the young guys some experience, see what they can do in live gameplay, and make sure everyone on the team realizes that nobody's job is safe when you're 0-3 in conference play. The fact of the matter is the Juniors and Seniors on this team were the latter Spaz classes when the guy was beyond checked out. Everyone knew it and I'm sure recruits did too. Some of those guys have been solid and the constant coaching changes have stunted their progress, but if we want real success, seniority needs to go out the window.

I'm not jumping off the ship yet, but I don't think it's wrong to point out the faults with Daz (though it would be nice if people didn't act like the guy is the anti-christ). Daz needs to adapt. He needs to work on clock management. He needs to add new layers to the offense as Smith gets more comfortable. I'm weary of bringing in another offensive coordinator but the Dabo model wouldn't be a bad idea. Bring in the best OC you can find who will take the run first principles Daz wants and add more wrinkles and add a better passing game. I was surprised to see a WR screen toward the end of the Clemson game, but we absolutely need to have more of those plays. There's ways to get the passing game going that won't open us up to turnovers.

Next year is clearly the make or break year, but Daz needs to show improvement this year not just talk about it to provide hope.

Napolean Bonaparte said...

Excellent find 34. They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks - I don't believe that is necessarily true. There is nobody here who doesn't want this guy and his team to succeed or who doesn't recognize his positive aspects. He can continue on the current path with the offense and go nowhere or learn from his mistakes, adjust, experiment and open things up. He can start by working his young QB and receivers on an effective short passing game where nobody goes much beyond the first down marker. The longer passing game can wait until his QB has worked it in depth during spring and fall practice next year. For now - flood the short field with receivers and give this kid the green light to throw outside the pocket to whoever is open (at or slightly beyond the marker) or run. Willis ought to be the primary back as long as they mix up the offense a little (rather than running him into the ground after one good play). Short term burst at the line is key with this OL - in addition to Willis I'd be trying Alston as a back and putting that burst of speed to better use and see what happens. If we lose - fine - but we will be entertained more than we are now. And the point is that this is all about entertainment. Its a kids game - not the Marine Corps.

If the sentiment on this board is any indication of the overall fan base than Daz is on the hot seat already. It's all those players he mentions, w/ the addition of a competent PK, that will determine if he sinks or swims. I'm starting to get the feeling I'm the only one who thinks he's got what it takes. This will play out over the next 2 1/2 years. We'll see.

After the FSU game Daz claimed that BC faced an outstanding defense with many NFL prospects and his team was young starting a sophomore QB. Seemed reasonable and most people accepted it. Later FSU played Wake, Miami and Louisville. FSU faced two freshmen and one sophomore QBs. Those QBs passed for an average of 300 yards a game against FSU. Why are BC's young players unable to produce but other teams freshmen and sophomores can? In ACC play BC's mobile QBs, Wade and Smith have thrown 60 times completing 18 for 200 yards. 50 yards per game and a completion rate of 30%. The team has no wins in conference. Take away the 39 yard completion against the Clemson second team D in garbage time and Smith's numbers are 6 for 21 for 48 yards with 13 yards rushing on 7 attempts. 28 plays for 61 yards. Two yards a play. It has the worst offense in the league and about the worst passing attack in the country. The Globe, the Heights and the coach may see promise, progress and growth but it looks like the same inept show we saw against FSU.. Six points a game in conference play. Not a winning formula.

Bravesbill said...

Florida coach Jim McElwain said 216 students tried out to be the Gators' new walk-on kicker. Why didn't Daz do this last year or this year? I'm sure they could have found somebody comparable to Apon, who was a heck of a lot better than the scrubs on the current roster.

Hoib said...

BB

During the Wake game the commentator said that Lich. was a w/o. I think Daz rolled the dice and lost by not spending the past off season scouring the country for a top grade kicker, even a JUCU guy. Instead w/ the exception of Lich. he stayed w/ the staus quo. A big mistake IMO, if he had to eat Knoll's Schollie so be it. He should have admitted that what he had wasn't good enough and fixed the problem. He should not go into this off season w/o having a plan to bring in a top quality kicker. It's too important a position to screw around w/. He also needs to review his process for finding that kid. I don't have confidence that anyone on the staff knows how to identify what we need. As Bill Raftery says, "we need a guy w/ onions" not someone w/ the deer in the headlights look that's been exhibited so far.

EL MIZ said...

Knoll is 6/6 on extra points and 1/1 on FG. Lichtenberg is 3/3 on extra points but only 1/4 on FG. perhaps Addazio was playing the wrong guy.

mod34b said...

The Mike Knoll "problem" is vastly overstated.

Knoll, as true frosh, was 3/4 in 2014 on FGs and 13/15 on PAT. He did freak out at Yankee Stadium on national TV and missed a PAT. No one will forget that. But no one remembers that Knoll was decent before that event.

Joey Launcford is the guy who missed 4 PAT last year.

and here is something interesting: Alex Howell was 5/11 on FG in 2014, but Daz went initially with Howell as the PK. Then he goes with Lic who is 1/4. huh??

Why Daz? Trying to freak out Knoll some more?

maybe had he gone with Knoll earlier (assuming Knoll actually is good) we would have beat Duke and Wake?

Hoib said...

Knoll was 81% on PATS last year. That is not Power 5 quality. IMO that's putrid and Daz should have done something about it before this season began.

Vertical passing would be a great idea, but every time I've seen us try it this year (regardless of QB), the DB has been step for step with the WR. We could have Matt Ryan back under center, and he still would have trouble dropping a ball onto a WR who is draped in defense.

This means we need to design the routes better. Fly routes won't cut it. We need out and ups, post routes, flag routes, even come backs. We've taken our shots down field this year, just not very effectively.

Everyone and their brother knows how to open the field. I refuse to believe that Daz and Fitch don't know what 95% of BC internet comments do. I am not harping on the athletes, but maybe Daz knows what he has, and knows where success can be found.
