VT hands BC another basketball loss

The team played with a little more effort, but were still way too sloppy and lost to Virginia Tech. What I found interesting is listening to Malcolm Huckaby. Here is ostensibly national analyst, yet he also happens to be a BC alum and a former BC radio analyst. Throughout the game he was openly and repeatedly critical of Eli Carter. Too many analysts have giving Carter a pass and said he's trying to do too much. Huckaby pointed out Carter's poor shot selection and sloppy passing. It doesn't make it any less frustrating to watch, but it gives me a little comfort that people close to the program are saying what needs to be said.

Owens dunk will make the highlight reels. He was ok. Clifford looked good and played hard near the basket. Milon was a disappointment. We've seen him make the shots. Let's hope for more consistency next year.

Three games left...it is almost over.

Can't win w/ D.C. & the 4 dwarfs. I'm sure just like us these kids can't wait for it to be over. The brutal reality of the last 2 games is we see how far behind the 2 programs that started the rebuild when we did.

I have hope....

....based on Jared Dudley's tweet stating he would one day come back and coach at The Heights.

Please everyone focus on the sketches of the IPF. Once that is built everything changes.

The team is un-watchable- I think my drunken slob mod roommates could beat these guys - how is it possible this collection of Division 1 athletes cannot make free throws and shoot to poorly - it is really pathethic

Unfortunately Christian has no choice but to play Carter since he has no one else that could handle the ball at point with Robinson out. Over the course of the season I have considered whether or not Carter is hurting or helping this team. The answer is actually both. He can't play point guard but is being asked to do so. This means the team truly has no one to run the offense and that's why we go through long stretches without scoring. At the same time he is one of the few who can create their own shots. Without Carter we lose games by 30. With Carter we lose by 15.

If Graves can play next year then there is hope. A team with a PG can at least run an offense and compete. Robinson is an ACC caliber player. Turner is an ACC caliber athlete. He just can't shoot but that can be worked on. Barnes-Thompkins is also atheltic enough to play at the ACC level (off the bench) but he has an incredibly low basketball IQ. That can be fixed too with coaching.

Leaving last nights game I thought firing Christian was on the table. But the more I think about it the more I think he just needs to add 2 ACC caliber players each year. I think he did that this year with Robinson and Turner. Hopefully Graves and someone else are those guys next year. In college basketball it only takes 1 great player with good guys around them to be a good team.

This team is an utter disaster. I don't know what to think of Xtian, I'd love to say he just needs more time, but what bothers me is the team doesn't seem to play with any kind of system or strategy. I still can't really identify what playing style Xtian is aiming for.

Can we get Skinner back?

G & SL

I'd love to get Skinner back, or failing that someone Skinneresque. Hes already turning it around at K State.

I agree about Carter, but my beef is w/ Xtian not the kid. Coach must have known his game, why bring him in as a 1? He recruited 3 freshman 2s and he brings in a GT 2 and try's to switch him to 1. Should have brought in a 1 w/ this group. Even w/ the kid Graves coming next year. Nothing wrong w/ having 2 PGs. I'll give it another year to see how next years pieces fit in.

Carter is running the team. Coach is afraid to tell him off for obvious reasons.

JBQ - please elaborate on the "obvious reasons"

It's kind of funny that so many people forget that Skinner had 2 back to back stinker years at BC but want to fire Christian after this season, and still advocate bringing Al back

Calleb Yurish said...

Joe, Skinner did not have back to back "stinker years." In 2008, they finished 6-10 in ACC play, but beat Duke the following season and made the NCAA Tourney before losing to USC. They then had a rough year in 09-10 after losing Rice in Skinner's final season, but there's no doubt Al could've taken that 2010-2011 team to the NCAA Tourney that Donahue took to the NIT.Even in Al's last year, 2010, they still beat UNC, they weren't totally irrelevant and non competitive like they were last year and every year under Donahue except his first (which was with Skinner's kids, so Im not really seeing your point.

I think he means 98-99 and 99-00 (6-21, 11-19)

I believe Joe is referring to Al's first 2 years on the job, and his point is correct. Now Al won the title in yr3 on his way to National coach of the year, imagine a BC coach attaining such an honor! I hope JC shows some progress next year, but if he doesn't we can't wait any longer than that. So I'm squarely in the give him one more year camp. If he's a goner Bates should be too at that point.

It was his 2nd and 3rd year. He went 3-13 in the BE both years, then broke out in year 4, learn to use the google machine Calleb.

Joe

I was off by a year, better to use the google machine then rely on my memory!

Did not realize you meant the first two years, I now see your point. Thought you were referring to the last two of his tenor with were so controversial. Sorry. Man, what would we do without that machine!
