Chatman joins Basketball team

According to reports, former BYU guard Jordan Chatman is our newest basketball transfer. He's a graduate, so he is eligible immediately, but that might be the only thing normal about his situation. Unlike most grad transfers, Chatman is not a one-year rental. He actually has three years of playing time left. He's also 22 and has used a redshirt year too. Chatman's unique age and eligibility stats are all related to his time as a Mormon missionary.

As a missionary he took a two year break from college. The mission stops the NCAA playing time clock, but he was still able to get through school quickly.

Chatman came off the bench for BYU last season. He is likely to be a role player with BC too. He's not a difference maker, but should provide some good depth and maturity. With his remaining years of eligibility, he doesn't really help the scholarship imbalance like a normal grad transfer might have. Hopefully his age becomes an asset, because this team is desperate for a leader. Welcome aboard, Jordan.

Guy scored 2.6 points per game coming off bench for BYU

So with three years in graduate school, will he be the first player in NCAA history to come off the bench with a PhD or JD or maybe even both? This beggars the question of just when we will have the first player from the Villanova championship squad compete as a graduate student at the University of Tennessee wearing a pair of Summitt's sneakers.

can't imagine what this possibly accomplishes.

The chronology is unclear. Apparently, he was Mr. Basketball and Gatorade PoY for the state of Washington coming out of high school, by which time he had also completed his Associates Degree (by taking college courses during high school). He then did two years of missionary work before attending BYU. He then did four semesters of academics to complete his BA degree, but during that time played only one season of basketball (as a freshman?)? I don't know, but at this stage his high school stats are probably more indicative of his potential than his BYU stats, right? I don't know what they are, but the awards might mean something and based on the youtube videos, he was certainly a scorer in high school.

His other offers were pretty pathetic too. Not sure this does much at all.

last transfer from utah was Paul Pete, so I think ATL is holding out hope.

If you look at his game log, he started gaining more minutes in conference play at put up a series of pretty solid games. Just a guess, but after 2 years off for mission work he probably was pretty rusty and needed some time to find his conditioning and his game again.

Mission work also likely explains the poor recruiting if he was set on doing his two year mission straight out of high school. Then second time around schools are taking a shot on a guy who hadn't played organized basketball in two years.

Seems like a decent flyer to me. He'll at the least be more physically developed than most players which should help on the defensive side of the ball and finishing at the hoop on offense.

gP. Interesting and plausible theory. Makes some sense.

I wonder why a Mormon would leave BYU for a Catholic school? Or why are they not keeping this soon-to-reblossom player? Just a change of pace/scenery??

I'd play in the ACC over the WCC any day....although BYU is usually a tourney and/or bubble team these days.

I read that BYU didn't want him to play ball while he was going to law school. BC was more than willing to let him go to law school and play.
