BC picks four captains

After messing around with "game day" captains for a few seasons, Addazio decided to return to BC's old ways. The team voted on four captains who will represent the team for the entire season. The honored four are Truman Gutapfel, John Johnson, Tyler Rouse and Myles Willis.

I don't think captains or the idea of game day vs season captains wins any games for a team like BC. But I do think that having four elected leaders can hep build a better team culture. I hope these guys set a good example on the practice fields and the locker room and help BC get out of its rut.

I also hope that these captains set a good example while the team is in Ireland. We don't need any nonsense in a foreign country just as he season starts.

Finally got around to watching the '93 BC-Notre Dame game that ATL posted a few days back. It got me thinking about the best games in modern BC history. I've been watching since 1983, and these are the 3 most thrilling games that put BC on the national stage since 1980. Curious what others think.

1) Doug Flutie's Hail Mary to Gerard Phelan, BC versus Miami, 1984. Undoubtedly, the biggest game in BC history, one that even casual, non-BC fans can cite.

2) David Gordon's thrilling last-second kick to beat #1 Notre Dame, 1993. This is a close second in my book to Flutie's miracle. Never before had BC beaten Notre Dame and after the 1992 debacle, this was sweet revenge. Glen Foley, Pete Mitchell, Mike Mamula. So many BC greats on the field and Tom Coughlin, arguably the best BC coach since Frank Leahy.

3) Matt Ryan's miracle comeback in the rain against Va Tech, 2007. I have never seen BC play so poorly for 57 minutes and so great for the final 3. This was a gutty, hard-fought victory and propelled BC to the ACC Championship game. The program is a long way from those glory years.

These 3 stand out to me. I know there are more, but I think these were the most well-known on the national stage. I can recall some other close Notre Dame games as well as some back and forth thrillers versus Clemson. Unfortunately, there have not been any standout games Since Jags left. It's time for fun BC football to make a comeback.

I agree with all the games you listed. The one game I would give the Adazzio regime was 2014 against USC. As an alum who lives in LA and is surrounded by loud and obnoxious USC fans, it was a great watching our offensive line and defense completely destroy them all night. The coaches called a great game. They were top ten at the time too, although very overrated.

Our talent and coaching has slipped so far, I would just be thrilled with a win this year over mediocre GT.

Knocking ND out of the #1 slot on David Gordon's field goal gets my vote for our best game ever. I still have the Sports Illustrated magazine with BC on the cover for that win.
The Flutie pass was more emphatic but this was a bigger win in my opinion.

The pass is one thing. The catch is another. Flutie actually threw it from the 35. His scrambling allowed his receivers to get downfield. The Miami d-backs said that they edged up because they knew that Flutie could not throw it that far. Phelan caught it well within the end zone. I still have nightmares that he dropped it. Gordon had missed a field goal against Northwestern at the gun and BC was 0-2. The hold by Foley on a high snap sealed the deal. You could see Coughlin de-icing Gordon before the kick. Can you imagine the pressure? "Wide right" could have been a very real nightmare from 41 yards. Pete Mitchell had just caught a ten yard pass that should have gone for two. He was like a raging elephant. As for Ryan, you have to remember that there was an onside kick to set up the second touchdown. I can't remember the Marine who covered the grenade but I now have to look. I still can see Callender breaking open in the right end zone as Ryan scrambled to his left. What a throw. Of course, "those were the days". They can either be "daydreams or reality". As BJK has stated more than once, "whatever it takes".

I watched the full BC Miami game on classic sports (before they started editing them down). Even knowing how it would end, that was still a thrilling game, and two nicely talented teams

ATL

I think what we are trying to avoid are shenanigans

EB

Because of my hate for ND I put game #2 ahead by a mile. I'd add in BC Texas. I think there is to be a celebration honoring the guys who played in that one this year.

This game was pretty good too - http://www.wakeforestsports.com/sports/m-footbl/recaps/101505aab.html Wish there was a video of Challenger's grab at the end.

@Napolean: Ha, I remember that game well. I was in the end zone and drenched. When Challenger caught that TD I jumped up on the bench in front and completely bit it. My feet went out from under me and I slammed my elbow on the aluminum. Didn't matter, I had a blast. That whole season was a lot of fun, besides the annual TOB WTF loss (that year to UNC).

I thought about both the USC win and the BC victory over Texas in '76 (or was it '75?). There was also a pretty big win over Penn State about 15 years ago and many in the 80's talk about BC fans tearing down the Alumni goalpost and carrying it across campus when Flutie's Eagles won on the road against 'Bama. However, Alabama was down that year so I moved it further down my list. I also remember the Ryan comeback against Wake, but the game was not televised nationally and not well known.

BC-Miami was the following game for Miami after blowing a 31-0 halftime lead to Reich and Maryland. Think their defense gave up? And of course BC-ND was right after The Game of the Century between 1 FSU and 2 ND. I'd say BC was the recipient of some fortunate timing.

Are you a BC fan? Common. Was BC fortunate that the ultimate Dick, Holtz went for an onside kick up 42-0 ? No we beat their ass plain and simple.

I am and timing is everything. As in life.
