What others are saying about BC's bowl

I think the various BC communities had consistent reaction to the bowl announcement. Most BC fans realize the Quick Lane Bowl is not the same at making the College Playoff, but it is still a positive opportunity. Most BC players on social media and the coaches seem very excited about playing in any bowl game. The general college football community seems a bit indifferent. Others took a mocking tone. All of that is to be expected. Both teams had plenty of rough moments this year. But BC shouldn't care. Ignore the chatter and win the game.

Jim donaldson is a retired loser from the providence journal, still yearning for the old Big East days, another clueless media member regurgitating bull shit

It looks like the sportswriters all have something snarky to say about bowls #40-21; so, what's their beef? Haters gonna hate.

The bowls are there for three primary purposes: make money for the promoter; make money for the participating teams/conferences and produce ad revenue for ESPN.

The kids get to travel to a new place; get to stay in a nice hotel for a week; eat some great food and have an opportunity to play in another NFL stadium.

BTW. The Detroit Lions are in First place in the NFC North. That's a big deal and nothing to joke about. For the seniors who will never play on Sunday's after this bowl is played, you tell me they aren't jacked about their last shot..,their last hurrah? Go Eagles Beat the Terps!

Well, there's this news story to look over and I must say it's fair, accurate and a good summary of BC written from a UM writer's point of view:

Wondering how ESPN will shoot the camera angles with an empty stadium a guarantee. There are WAY TOO many bowls!

Funny.

I didn't see any praise in the pile???

What is quick lane? I looked it up. It is Ford motor companies auto repair chain.

Place to get car maintained - oil changed and tires rotated.

So a bad bowl with the most boring sponsor possible.

Add that to our Continental Tire Bowl trophy.

Of course that one drew 70,000 in Charlotte. This one will be announced as 25,000 but probably 10,000 fannys in the seats.

Seriously, how are they going to promote this game on national TV knowing there will be no one in the stands and no one watching?

This is exactly what we need to play up to get rid of our stumbling coach. This is not success for Boston College. It's just not. I don't care what's written on this blog, etc. The coaching staff must go. We are a national embarrassment and people are calling us out everywhere but Boston and inside the administration. Someone needs to be held accountable for mediocrity.

What are the obligations of the participating schools ?? Must they sell or buy a certain # of tickets ?? If they have an allotment , most will be unsold . Do they (the schools) then distribute to local fans who would not otherwise be able to spend the $$ to attend. In the end , I would imagine that Maryland and BC do not make any $$$ from participation ??? It is great for the players , however, that have put so much time and effort in playing their regular season games. GO BC !!!!

It looks like the reaction is pretty consistent: mockery. What's the over/under on attendance? 2500?

The payout last year for the Quick Lane Bowl was reportedly $1.2MM per team. Is that reduced by unsold allotted tickets or by other metrics? And is BC likely to make a modest profit from this game? My understanding is that most schools lose money from the second and third tier bowls.

Bowl money is pooled, no?

CT said...

Should be exlained on collegefootballplayoff.com, including APR bonuses.

Bravesbill said...

NB--Schools usually lose money from second and third tier bowls because they bowls' payouts are pretty minimal (500k). If the payout for this bowl is 1.2 million, BC should make a small profit even if they don't sell out their ticket allotment. I'd be more interested to see if BC tried to cut costs by not bringing a band, etc.

Guido said...

I would think that BC is not faced with the decision of spending the $$$ necessary for lodging and travel of the band - My guess is that band members would prefer to spend the Holidays with friends and family. I could be wrong , but other bloggers may know the answer to this situation. If it were the "Fiesta Bowl", then I am almost sure that the band would want to travel.

Rhule to Baylor.

bceagle91 said...

Guido, the band will not be going. They were told that but I imagine that most would prefer to spend the holidays at home, as you note.

Geezer eagle said...

How come the band never comes to GT game? Even when we were good with Ryan the band didn't come to ATL

Schools often lose money on BCS bowls, too. Conferences subsidize some losses, decreasing individual shares. You gotta sell those ticket allotments or buy them. Was it UConn who couldn't sell but something like 10% of their Orange Bowl tickets a few years back? That's a lot of money coming out of conference members' pockets. Donors and alumni wouldn't stand it, but I bet there are a bunch of school presidents who would just stay home.

Brohm to Purdue

I am a BC undergrad and Temple Post Graduate so I follow both programs. Certain higher ups at Temple were happy to see Addazio go and did not say nice things about him. The overall sentiment about Rhule leaving Temple is that he fixed a huge mess. Who left it? Yep Addazio. Rhule's first year at Temple was 2-10. Al Golden fixed Temple after Temple had losing seasons 23 of previous 26 seasons and Addazio wrecked it after just 1 decent year.

Temple Records:
2003 Bobby Wallace 1-11
2004 Bobby Wallace 2-9
2005 Bobby Wallace 0-11
2006 Al Golden: 1-11
2007 Al Golden: 4-8
2008 Al Golden: 5-7
2009 Al Golden 9-4
2010 Al Golden 8-4
2011- Steve Addazio 9-4
2012 Steve Addazio 4-7

Yikes. We (BC) is in trouble

Knucklehead said...

Above is another reason why Golden should be on BC's list next season. If you can build up a school with no tradition then you can turn BC around. Golden and Al Washington could close a lot of good recruits for the Eagles.

Guido said...

knucklehead - you are right on !!

EL MIZ said...

agreed on Golden. he is TE coach for the DET Lions right now, will be interesting to see what he does next year. probably another positional job in the NFL, but he should be available.

god it is even more amazing to me how awful Bates is - look at those Golden/Temple years. Daz took over a program that had gone 17-8 the prior 2 seasons, goes 9-4 in year 1, then in year 2 goes 4-7 and Bates offers him a 6 year contract????? it is really baffling

Bravesbill said...

I bet you the Daz spin is that they moved up to a better conference for his second year so it would take an additional 5 years to build them into a potential conference contender.

John said...

And they were young.

Could be some bad fitting Depends - but Bates looks like a dead man walking in those Quick Lane bowl pictures.
