Tourney still lucrative for BC

I tweeted this out on Friday, but I still wanted to draw attention to this article on the ACC's Big Dance revenues. Because of the conference's success and North Carolina's deep runs, the ACC is bringing in record amounts of TV revenue for its members. BC will collect $6.8 million for doing nothing. That is not a bad deal. Of course the lucrative failure sends BC the wrong sort of message. I hope someone in leadership realizes how much more lucrative winning will be.

Sponging off others is no way to live. And it's a terrible message for a University to teach its student. losing pays for our once proud alma mater.

One day - if this continues - the ACC will wake up and boot BC.

I agree. No matter how difficult - everything and everybody has its limits. I don't think we are there yet but we aren't too far away if the misery continues. All the ACC has to do is get BC to the negotiating table on a reasonable exit plan. It can do that by threatening to have its member institutions publicly humiliate BC by asking it to leave the conference in the best interests of its athletes (and refusing to schedule them in football and basketball) and claim that BC is unjustly enriching itself at the expense of other members and placing their athletes at risk. BC would want to avoid that at all costs and would negotiate a reasonable settlement to make the whole thing look voluntary. If not express - there are at least implied financial obligations when you join a conference. BC's Board of Trustees can no longer afford not to give proper oversight and allow the university to manage athletics into the ground. Hard to believe it would ever come to this - but at some point "shit happens".

At least we would have a chance of winning in the Patriot League and rekindle the ancient rivalry with HC. I sincerely don't want this option but if the administration doesn't commit the resources to compete in ACC play, it's inevitable.

We are the pre-Billy Beane Oakland As or the Pittsburgh Pirates/Kansas City Royals of the late 1990s and early 2000s. You mean we get a revenue share even if we expend none of it on building a competitive team?!?! Sweet, keep that coming!

Meanwhile, other small Catholic schools routinely make the tournament and one has made the final game in consecutive years. Why are we different?

Geezer eagle said...

Excellent question, Five. It can't all be attributed to "academic standards".

"I know you have to believe," Gonzaga Athletic Director Mike Roth said. "The biggest drawback some other schools have is that someone in that hierarchy says 'We can't do that,' or 'We can never be like...' Well, if that's the case, then you probably can't."

Thanks BC for not believing in yourself.

Go Jesuit Gonzaga, a school with 7800 students in Spokane Washington.

It is fast coming to the point where BC will implode under its own ineptitude. I hate to see it happen but it appears greed, political correctness, liberalism, diversity and entitlement have overcome hard work, dedication, commitment, desire and honor. Ever to Excel is replaced Ever to Achieve Bogus Credibility.

Thank God Father Monan is not alive to see it.

Geezer eagle said...

Max, I agree with everything you just said, but what does that have to do with our broken sports program? Please elaborate.

JBQ said...

I happen to agree with "Mad Max". I suspect that this all has to do with political correctness. The great sports culture at DePaul was destroyed by it and Ray Meyer rolled over in his grave even before he was dead. Good point on greed, political correctness, liberalism, diversity, and entitlement. It is all about redistribution of wealth. Men's basketball and football rake in the cash from the ACC and then it is used to fund such obscenities as women's Lacrosse and women's ice hockey (horse hockey). Capitalism is based on "hard work, dedication, commitment, desire, and honor". Actually, I believe that Max nailed this one. "Georgia Eagle" evidently doesn't see that watering down breeds mediocrity. I see smoke and the fire may well be the dropping of football.

I feel that BC has become a pawn.

I do not see BC taking a leadership poistion in any manner. Sports, education, research, developing young minds.... fill in the blank

I always hoped that BC would be a leader. Not a politically correct institution that paints with the same broad brush of political correctness.

I am sad for the current state of awareness And common sense - at BC and the students they target.

For sports specifically I see no leadership at BC that states to the sports world... we are BC. We will compete and win at the highest levels despite your corruption and short sightedness. We are committed to win, excel and lead others. If we loose we get up and start again. If we win we do so with grace and humility. If you don't like it get the F out of the way.

To shoot high you have to aim high. This constant ringing of hands and excuses are nothing more than a disease.

Decide what you want. Put the people and tools in place and succeed. Anything less is just more lies, liberalism and victim mentality and waste of time, money and resources.

None of this is zero sum game. I belive that BC does not have the balls to be great at anything. They are complacent in all aspects of their mission.

Well shit. They cannot drop football. They just got an agreement with the city to build a practice annex to the football stadium.

There is a first time for everything. However, when was the last time a school was "booted" from a conference? Never heard of it.

Who is going to be AD? That will address a lot of concerns.

Hold your horses, JBQ. I completely agree with you and Max on these issues. Liberalism and political correctness have indeed resulted in BC redistributing the wealth so the girls field hockey team isn't "OFFENDED." Put the money and resources into the money sports - men's football, B-ball and ice hockey.screw Title ,IX

Knucklehead, if we hire a good AD, it will address a lot of concerns. If we blow it yet again on a big hiring decision, it'll raise a lot more concerns. I don't have a lot of faith in the current administration to make a good hire. I really hope I'm wrong.

cventner said...

The money doesn't mean much if no one cares about BC sports...the point of having a Div I college program is student alumni and community engagement, not collecting a check.

John said...

This is the biggest problem and cventner hits it on the head. We have been so bad for so little long, we have lost our fans.

Nobody cares about BC Sports anymore - sad!

Let's remember that the players play the game and the coaches coach the players. It seems easy for many to blame BC's recent failures in sports on the administration. If you follow that logic then Leahy must have been doing his job when Ryan was QB since BC was very competitive during those years.

I do not want to come off as an apologist because I do think the administration has been too conservative and slow to act given the crisis that has developed around the two big revenue sports. The BOT was correct not to renew Bates, who while a nice guy, should have been dumped last year as the sacrificial lamb for the no ACC win performance by his two coaching choices and the premature decision to extend both before either demonstrated sustained long-term success. As result we have lost year into the potential rebuilding process with a new AD. Make no mistake the future of BC sports hangs on the hiring of the next AD since this individual has much more impact on the programs than Leahy and BOT.

Regarding the current student and fan apathy, if the programs start winning and the AD puts measures in place to improve the tailgating and game day experience, then things should turn around quickly.

PS every conference needs some perennial cellar dwellers so the elite teams can shine at the top. As such, BC is in no danger of getting booted but there is no reason why BC can not compete in the ACC, and when the stars align every few years, excel.

Too bad - Zags absolutely blew it by relying on one guy. Bullcrap. They forgot how to play basketball on the biggest stage!

UNCriminals. Now the NCAA can take it away.

Napolean Bonaparte said...

Additional point to John's points re Gonzaga - their endowment is only about $180 million. The other major issue is whether the majority of alums really give a hoot about athletics at BC. I have no evidence other than my own experiences where I get the sense that there is a lot of apathy and ignorance. And the tolerance exhibited for a long time now to Leahy's and others mismanagement by itself tells you something. I hope that folks like us are not a small, albeit vocal, minority of the alumni community - because if that is the case - its all heading into the shitter.

bceagle91,
It is an important hire and it will be telling. To say the least.

Difficult to separate BC focus on money from the current situation. Can a University with the 40th rank endowment (nearly $1.8 billion) really not afford to fire either a coach (or two) and or an AD because they won't pay off the remainder of their contracts? Seems crazy given the net result of keeping the current FB and BB coaches and AD has been unbelievable erosion of attendance and other revenues from these programs. Yet the issue of Fr. Lahey's support and understanding of the athletics of BC have been around since his first year in the President's chair. How can BC fail at recruiting in either sport? How can we not pull off what U Conn basketball just did with a Duke Asst Coach? How can it take 10 years to get a field house? Sadly, I think it will take a "day of reckoning" .. where applications fall, elite students begin to deselect BC for the BOT to recognize the asset value of its athletics programs and make appropriate efforts to remedy! A vote for athletics excellent is not a vote against academic excellence ... hello ND, Duke, Northwestern, Stamford, Harvard (BB and Hockey)... others ... it seems BC has failed to reconcile this fact ...

knucklehead said...

There is an arrogance at the top of they think that devaluing the success of the primary sports does not have a negative impact on the university.

I would argue that most of that 1.8 to 2.5 billion is because alumni had positive experiences at BC. Alot of those probably had sports as a backdrop.

It isn't always about $. Sad that $ is the primary benchmark of success at a Jesuit university.

ConcernedEagle,

The "reckoning" will be more of a gradual plateau in interest...which is already happening at Boston College. Freshman applications have been down 4 of the last 5 years. BC received over 34,000 applications in 2012, less than 29,000 last year. compare this to Villanova and ND, where applications are increasing each year. Villanova applications increased by 20% after the NCAA championship. Students are attracted to winning programs, not doormats of power conferences.

True. BC was not a school of choice prior to Flutie. People forget his input into driving BC up and onward. Major decisions since especially when the made a mandatory fee for season tickets and charged for tailgating drove away boatloads of fans. BC for a bit thought they were going to draw like Pats. So they sat Bach, hired incompetent ADs who brought in brutal coaches. No one remembered what got them where they were.
