How will the Coaching Carousel impact BC?

Three weeks ago I called for Addazio's firing and I thought we were headed for a coaching change. Now Addazio might be the safest coach in the country. Barring another 180, BC is headed for a bowl and the coach is secure in Chestnut Hill for at least another year. But that doesn't mean that all the change in College Football won't impact BC. If as many as six SEC schools make changes, plus a traditional deep-pocketed power like Nebraska makes a move, the dominoes will impact the ACC and potentially even BC.

Will anyone hire Addazio away?
At this point in the rebuilding project and in his career, I don't think Addazio will leave for just any old job. I think it would have to be more money and a greater chance to win. And even as lowly as BC feels sometimes, there aren't that many better options for him. I don't think any of the SEC schools will hire him. His reputation precedes him in the conference and I don't think any fanbase sees him as the guy who is going to unseat Saban. I don't see any West Coast teams coming for him (Addazio at UCLA?). That leaves the Big Ten. Addazio doesn't fit the mold of a Nebraska coach nor does he have any ties to the program. I am sure his agents could sell him to their leadership as a guy who is able to recruit outside the region and as a guy who will run a power football program. I think Nebraska will go for a bigger name or one of their own, however, if they strike out at their top few choices, maybe Addazio comes into the picture. The second elite Big Ten job that might open is Penn State. After this season, James Franklin is going to have his pick of good offers. He could be in the mix at Florida or Tennessee if he wants. If he does leave Penn State, Addazio might make sense for them. But like Nebraska, I think they would shoot for a bigger name first.

What happens to the ACC?
Even though Addazio might not be high on anyone's list, I could see big shakeups in our division. Despite Louisville's problems this year, Petrino is a proven winner with an SEC track record. Wake and NC State are having good seasons at the right time. Both Doeren and Clawson might be Tier 2 guys who end up in a better job because half the schools out there can't bag their dream coach. Even Babers might end up in a better spot. That type of turnover would be great for BC. The Atlantic has been one of the toughest divisions in football. The churning of coaches would mean a few programs take a step back. That would be welcome right as our talent starts to develop.

Recruiting
Addazio is close to finished with this recruiting class, but every coaching change means a chance to pick off someone else's verbal or get a 5th year transfer who doesn't want to hang around for the new guy. This scenario has worked well for BC in the past. This season should be no different.

Why should BC retain Addazio? He is 1-12 against ranked teams and 13-25 in the ACC.

I'm having a blast with the way the team is playing now. And I'm more than willing to give credit to Daz for the recruiting and making whatever decision has led to this beauty (ironically, its probably him finally letting go of play calling). But if we're being honest with ourselves, the well is poisoned. The minute that Daz loses one, the second guessing will return. It'll be painted as regression to the norm rather than an outlier.

I hope that Jarmond has had feelers out and knows who's available to us. If the right piece is in play, I hope he makes a move. Similarly, if some how Daz gets lured away, I hope that Jarmond is ready to move and we aren't caught with our pants down. This season has made Jarmond earn his salary, maybe not in a way we expected, but we're here none the less. We need to exit the off season in a better position than we enter it (whatever that entails).

Everyone is drinking the Daz's Kool-Aid. The man is an imposter. He beat 3 mediocre teams and folks are getting all lathered up here. He is alwful, inconsistent, is a terrible game manager and will never consistently win. You all are cray.

DAZ has found his "dream job" and he is not leaving.

His need to produce victories is really not an issue. DAZ has gotten the best contract of his life at BC and an extension with a pitiful record. A couple of surprise victories in the course of the season and DAZ is set for life. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day...DAZ is the ultimate "blind squirrel".

Nobody else will take DAZ off BC's hands. There was not exactly a clamor for his services when he left Florida or Temple. Only BC was enamored of his schtick, Dude.

I want BC football to succeed with all my heart. For the last 53 years, I've attended, watched, listened to, or recorded every football game. Hell, I suffered through the winless season and the Japan Bowl....but I've never felt as flat as I do when I consider DAZ as the head of our football program.

I hope the kids win out; but that DAZ goers elsewhere....maybe into the broadcast booth. The ESPN announcers seem to be his most enthusiastic constituency.

Agree, barring a disaster these last 3 weeks (I mean, UConn just got blown out by a terrible Mizzou team at home), the football team is bowling under very low expectations. Jarmond can defer the football decision a year. Basketball is going to be a tougher sell to retain Christian because BC is so far behind the tourney caliber ACC teams. Despite some promise in the backcourt, what is the team's ceiling? 6 ACC wins? 4? Even 8 conference wins over 3 years should be enough for a pink slip. The basketball world is a total crapshoot right now and many coaches are going to be on the move.

If Daz is fed up and bolts for greener pastures, good for him. Outside of two or four games, the relationship has been a lot of heartburn. I cannot imagine the demand being there, but a state school may throw some crazy money and fair buyout clause.

What a bizarre post by Atl.

I suppose it’s indicative of how anemic the program has been for the better part of a decade.

No one in their right mind is hiring Daz away even if we win out in impressive fashion. Although I do wonder if someone makes an offer to Loeffler. His play calling has been near perfect during this mini streak and the freshman have shown serious growth.

NYCEagle said...

Has anyone considered what might happen to our talented crop of freshman if Addazio is fired at the end of this season? (i.e. they transfer). Wouldn’t you rather change leadership when the program is on more stable ground, thus making us more appealing to better candidates. Another year of Daz is not unbearable. If he goes 8-4 (considering how easy our schedule looks) maybe we can sell ourselves to bigger name coaches as a program on the come up when the rest of the ACC is in flux

A sign of a good coach is when the team improves as the season goes on and continues to play hard through adversity. Daz checks both boxes. Say what you want this team genuinely Loves him and they play their Asses off for him. He has endured huge injuries at key positions and unlike Jimbo he doesnt have a roster full of 4 star guys to plug in.Kill him for losing to Wake but he absolutely deserves credit for finally featuring Dillon & coaching up these underclassmen on the fly. The Future is 🌞 when a month ago he was dead man walking.
Can you say the same for Fla St or Louisville??

To get the Landry less team to play that inspired friday is a tribute to him and his staff. Jimbo loses his F QB and the team plays uninspired.

BC has a small win streak and all of a sudden Daz is the second coming of Jesus? Please!

I'd like to hear an AD sell the hiring of a coach who's gone 42-42 all-time, has one of the five or six worst Power 5 records in the past five years, and is known for bad game management and a highly conservative offensive approach to his fan base. And no, three wins in October over reeling opponents are not going to improve the sales pitch in a meaningful way.

The last 3 games have finally been fun, and Addazio seems pretty decent at recruiting and cheerleading. But the thought that he would actually be hired away at this point made me laugh out loud.

Joe said...

I don't see Addazio as being completely safe. Chip is a program changer and this is the one chance BC will have to get him. If it's possible you make the change. Anyone who would transfer would be a moron and there is clearly talent here to win immediately.

There is still plenty of season left. NCSU and Cuse are toss ups. If he drops both and finishes 6-6, I would hardly call that untouchable especially with Chip out there (who reportedly is more concerned with fit than salary which could make it realistic for BC if they commit to everything else he wants for the program)

JBQ said...

He will be gone at 6-6. The way that the team is playing, they will be 8-4. There are still plenty of scenarios in the hopper by the reservoir.---By the way, the architect for The Heights was profiled on the last tv broadcast. He has an exceptional track record. The Heights itself is very impressive.

NYCEagle said...

With all the potential job openings what on earth makes anyone think Chip Kelly will choose BC?

CT said...

Daz to Penn State? Interesting to see what one three game winning streak does to rational thought.

mod34b said...

If Daz takes a new job, that would be cause for joy! Yay.

And as the new me, I fully agree with CT

PSU with sold out 110,000 seat stadium. Insane fans. Huge loyal following that expects wins . Did you see the Michigan night game at PSu this year. The white out. Wow. It was awesome. They have zero money issues PSU football is a massive cash cow. They pay what is needed

Ya'know there are lots of toothless hicks in PA outside of philly and Pittsburg (called Pennsa-Tucky) but they all got the Internet a few years ago. So they'll figure out Daz is as smart as a nut sack pretty quickly

How about Jim Christian to Duke?

How about Spaz to FSU?

Or gene defillippo as new ND AD??

Leahy as President of Harvard?

ATL as editor-in-chief of NYT

Knucklehead for U.N. Ambassador?

Agree, not to be pessimistic but anybody who expects to win out after winning the last 3 refer loss to inferior Syracuse team way back when. We're not going to " lose " DaZ, let's just roll and kick ass for now

The Coaching Carousel is something that I am not thinking about at the moment - just enjoying watching this team improve. UGA and Clemson fans have made positive comments to me.

I'm hoping that we went ultra conservative in the 2nd half against FSU, because it was obvious to the coaches that they had no chance to mount any kind of comeback.

But the change from first half to second half is something Addazio insists on doing.

We ran Dillon and Hilliman something like 18 times up the middle. Brown passed 4 times. That was it for the second half.

What if we were ahead by 18 points late in the 3rd quarter and Addazio decided to stay ultra conservative against a team that has not quit.

Ask Penn State how that worked out - as an example.

So I hope we don't go ultra conservative as HC first choice. I know games are different, but I don't want us to take our foot off the gas as routine strategy.

It will bite us in the a$$.

Go BC - Pedal to the metal.

I almost fell out of my chair when ATL brought up Daz being hired away. That is not going to happen and if so it will be an huge opportunity for BC to find a new coach when the team is on an upswing with a lot of young talent.

The real question is whether Daz will be fired. Losses to NC State and Syracuse will put Daz back on the fence. A loss to UConn would almost certainly cost Daz his job. To be sure the win over FSU complicates the situation even though it is clear that they are having a down year (as is Louisville). Most people had penciled in Virginia as a win so that was expected. The recent 3 game win streak has been enjoyable but has really only served to move Daz from likely to be fired to less likely to be fired.

The NC State game looks winnable at this point so a lopsided loss will put Daz back into purgatory. In the end I think Daz’s job will hinge upon the Syracuse game. Win and he is probably safe. If he goes 6-6 I think he is gone.

For my part I believe the team has some good momentum and I hope that Daz has learned some lessons during the past two seasons....most importantly if you don’t play to win, you will lose. I will withhold judgment until the final game but if Daz is 7-5 or better I could live with another year.

Still a bitch Mod. Cannot help yourself.

How about Ohio State wiring that Penn State OC 100k between the 3rd and 4th quarter to keep the play calling to a minimum. That guy sucks.

Another Ohio State fixer upper. Like the Wisconsin game last season and many more before it.

STLeagle, nice post. I am in complete agreement with your comments on Daz's future.

Napolean Bonaparte said...

If we are all wrong - and somebody hires Daz away for more money. So be it - I'd rather put that money to use on someone with a better overall record of achievement or find an up and coming younger talent wanting to make a step up. If Daz earns another year here - great. I would not even consider an extension until after next season. You see this across all sports where someone has a nice run over one season - then some decision maker in heat signs an obscene contract and they go back to being average or worse. Major league pitchers seem to be the best at this. If Daz does well over an extended period and he's happy coaching here - he knows he'll be amply rewarded and will have plenty of job security here. If he's in it just to win the lottery - let him go.

mod34b said...

The best scenario would be if Daz gets poached by another school and they have to pay BC a buyout payment!

Win-win

Mod, you sly fox. That's brilliant!
