Pining for Pinstripe but not looking as good

This week's Playoff reveal doesn't mean much for BC. What really matters is next week when the real dominoes fall. I think most BC fans want the Pinstripe Bowl and the Pinstripe Bowl seemingly wanted us. But dear old Notre Dame screwed things up by losing to Stanford. That probably knocked the Irish out of any big bowl, so they will fall into the ACC's slots. That bumps nearly everyone in the conference down including BC.

Here are what the experts think as of Tuesday afternoon:

-- SBNation: BC to Pinstripe
-- ESPN: BC to Quicklane (Detroit) and BC to Independence (Shreveport); They have Virginia Tech and NC State going to Pinstripe
-- CBS: BC to the Military Bowl (Annapolis); They have NC State to the Pinstripe
-- SI: BC to Independence (Shreveport); They have Virginia Tech to Pinstripe
-- USA Today: BC to Pinstripe
-- Sporting News: BC to Military Bowl (Annapolis); They have Virginia to the Pinstripe

I am biased but BC still seems like the best fit for the Pinstripe. We have a good regional fanbase that can sell tickets, we bring good TV ratings and there is an upswing in enthusiasm. We make much more sense than NC State or Virginia. However, I fear Virginia Tech. They will sell more tickets and have never played in the Pinstripe Bowl. The bowl's ability to bring in a fresh team with strong fan support is hard for BC to overcome. If we are knocked out of the Pinstripe, I believe it will be by the Hokies.

If we don't get New York, it might be Shreveport or Detroit, with a chance at El Paso. In my opinion the worst option is Shreveport. We've been there recently, it makes no geographic sense and is not a compelling sell to fans or recruits. Going back to Detroit is not ideal, but at least we recruit the region. El Paso has some appeal to me as a football fan, but I doubt Addazio and Jarmond care about the history of the Sun Bowl. Keep your fingers crossed for New York.

Wow. The person that writes the BC blog thinks they should go to the Pinstripe Bowl. What a hot take.

At this point, I’m just hoping we don’t get stuck with a weak opponent.

I don't care where we go. BC fans simply don't turn out for bowls. Hell, we didn't turn out when when we played VT for the ACC championship game. So do you blame the bowl committees? What I don't want is a MAC opponent. That would be insulting given we are one of the hottest teams in the country.

We 100% showed up for the Pinstripe Bowl in 2014. I should know I was there

EL MIZ said...

agree with the above - location i don't really care about but i'd love a good opponent. i think a convincing win gives us a shot at finishing in the top 25.

John said...

VT fans didn't show up either.

Geezer eagle said...

NYC, tell that to the idiots who make the bowl selections. How the hell can a 5-7 Florida St team be a higher priority than us? Too many fucking bowls. Only teams with winning records should be eligible.

Tim said...

Ditto the above comments. We are going to a third tier bowl no matter what, so I just hope we get a good opponent.

Georgia Eagle: FSU is 5-6 with Louisiana-Monroe at home Saturday.

Ps: the best attendance ever for the Pinstripe bowl was when BC played PsU

that was undoubtedly due to PSU fans.

BC has a small fans base and almost all of the young ones come with a too cool attitude.

Bowls have good reason to not want BC

This is where the AD shows if he has any nuts to swing. Hunch is that they tell the rookie AD to book his tickets for Annapolis. Cheaper and classier trip than the other ghetto options. Could be worse.

Geezer eagle said...

Thank you, Mod. You just reinforced my point. Damn I'm glad you are back.

John said...

BC fans would go to the Orange Bowl and probably the Gator Bowl and Citrus Bowl and a few others (Pinstripe, Military, Belk) that's about it.

BC to Pinstripe makes sense for Yankee stadium because rich BC Alums on Wall Street buy out the luxury boxes which happened vs PSU. I bet Pinstripe officials want us back, definitely more then they want NC State, VT travels well but may not to NY

Geezer eagle said...

Shabby, I hope you are right. Personally, I live outside Atlanta. I'll go to a bowl anywhere in the Southeast. NYC is too much of a hassle.

Shreveport is right down your alley then GE! I wouldn't mind the Military Bowl. Could do much worse than Annapolis.

Geezer eagle said...

Agreed. See you there for happy hour.

Where's your sense of adventure for NYC, Georgia Eagle? 🙂

Oddly, BC V ND rematch at Yankee Stadium is a pretty solid bowl option with a built in narrative (for the dummies who write broadcast copy.) Still, this kind of snub just reminds me why I find ND and their squid alumni so vile.

STL_eagle said...

I think BC was in line for the Pinstripe but due the ND loss will be pushed down from Tier Two consideration (Bell, Sun, Pinstripe, Taxslayer/Music City) to Tier Three (Military, Independence, Quick Lane).

Since the Tier Three picks are largely dictated by records versus the open selection of Tier Two they tend to start with the Military and end with the Quick Lane which probably puts BC in the Military over Duke and Virginia.

That said, because there are 10 potential qualified ACC bowl teams (including ND) if Florida State wins their final game, there is a decent chance that Florida State jumps into Tier Two and then BC will be pushed down to the second Tier Three slot and will go to the Independence.

Net, BC should be Pinstriping but could fall all the way to the Independence because of ND and Florida State. There is a chance that ND gets picked for a bigger bowl due to their decent record (9-3) and fan base and there is a chance that Florida State gets the lower tier bowl they deserve this year. Unfortunately I think we are headed to Shreveport but might land in the Military. Pinstripe still an option but not as likely as if ND won.

Agree with NYC eagle, BC fans did show up for the pinstripe, good opponent, great pregame tailgating at the bar, good venue for seeing the game, unlike Fenway. Too good to be true to happen again ..

Geezer eagle said...

So unless the bowl is in the Northeast BC fans won't show up? I certainly hope if we have a success season next year ( 9 wins) and BC lands a major bowl, our fans travel and show up by the thousands.

Napolean Bonaparte said...

The second and third tier bowls are about money and nothing else. Records and who is the most deserving have very little to do with it. BC, relatively speaking, is a small school where football is not a central connection point for thousands of alums as it is for the huge state universities with whom it competes. Until BC develops its fan base by combining winning football with a great tailgating/social experience that builds friendships and interest among alums and fans - I don't see it changing. Both of these are within our control to some degree with a lot of hard work and support from the administration of the school and the Athletic Department. And there is every reason for them to do so as it has a direct connection to fundraising and enhancing the profile of the school. The turnaround this season is definitely a step in the right direction and I'm happy that we will be going to any bowl (considering how the season began). I just hope Mr. Jarmond understands this and starts taking measures over time that will get us there.

JBQ said...

"STL_Eagle" has it right. It's all about the image of not travelling well. It is the job of Jarmond to change that.

I’m amazed that so many “gurus” on the networks, who are paid for their expertise & insider info, continue to project bowl matchups that are prohibited by NCCA/ACC rules.

Two examples.

All teams with a winning record (7-5 or better) have Biwl Priority over a 6-6 Team. FSU at 6-6 can’t be picked until all the 7+ win teams accept bowl invites.

The ACC prohibits Bowl partners from selecting the same school two years in a row. So BC cannot be sent back to Detroit.

Someone should probably DM Anthony Brown and tell him to uncheck that "like" he just made on twitter. I mean it brightened up my morning, nothing like a little black on blonde action with your coffee, but I don't think Daz will appreciate it.

I have been to two bowls to watch BC. The Music City Bowl in Nashville and the Continental Tire Bowl(I think that is what it was called) in Charlotte. Both times the BC turnout was embarrassing. I'm guessing there were less than 500 BC fans in Nashville.

Knucklehead said...

Details.

Knucklehead said...

Which bowl are they going to Scott, Pinstripe? I think Louisville, NCState and ND have better records and Wake is equal. Virginia and FSU would have to wait?

CT said...

Scott’s right. That 7 win rule over 6 win teams started last season, I think. There may be as many as 82 bowl eligible 6 win teams this year for 78 spots.

Contract bonuses, benchmarks of “success,” and especially ESPN are the culprits in all of this. Schools lose money on these trips, even the big ones playing in the big bowls. I think Auburn lost money when they went out to the Rose a bowl for the national championship a few years back. Turns out, Mickey Mouse is the Wizard of Oz.

Culprits. Trying to sound smart.

Dear Daz,

It's okay to reach out to Tennessee. We know you want to. You've earned the opportunity. You deserve them and they deserve you. We're good here.

Consider your dream fulfilled. You can even sprinkle paperclips all over your desk Salt Bae style if you would like when you get the job.

It's #TimeToFly, Dude.

Sincerely,
The BC Fans Who Are No Longer Attending Games, Watching on TV or Planning to Go to Another Crappy Bowl Game

I’m predicting BC in Yankees stadium. It’s the the one bowl that trusts BC to buy tickets, luxury boxes ... in addition to providing a big TV market, and a star player in AJ they can market.

Hokies seem like an odd fit New York, plus I think a better bowl will snatch up Va Tech b/c they travel like an SEC school.

Military is probably the fall back.

Knucklehead said...

Mod,
Run away again. Please. You are an idiot. Culprit isn't too smart for me. It is to smart for CT.

Stupid flit.

CT said...

Way two smart.

Mario Rigatoni said...

Okay, Okay, the misuse of "culprits" was funny, but let's get back to the action:

I haven't seen our boys play basketball yet this year, do we beat Nebraska?

I've heard good things about the backcourt, but I need to put a bet down NOW!

Just turned on the BC Nebraska game.

Typical way to end the half. Instead of being down 1, they managed their way into an 8 point deficit.

Several turnovers and an ill timed 3 pt brick gave them enough time for their own 3, which went in.

Sure, we can come back, but Christian teams just seem so undisciplined - with no idea how to accomplish fully focused team goals.

I am not articulating well, but hopefully you know what I mean.

A well coached team would not have finished the half that way.

Let's go Christian - lets go BC - shut me up.

John said...

Chatman out and also Hawkins with a knee injury.

Mario Rigatoni said...

I just lost 30 bucks.

I’m gonna stick to betting on football.

Our backcourt has promise though.

Not misused. As in, they’re responsible for too many bowls. The whole fucking point. Morons.

Moron. Not morons. I am saying you are writing with words that you don't really understand. Not that it was misused.
