BC-UMass preview

I have a weird feeling about this year. As you saw in my predictions, I am skeptical about BC putting it all together. However, when I think about Dillon and the OL, I think we are just going to crush some teams this year. And that is really fun to watch! So let's get this started. BC Football is back and I can't wait.

What's on my mind (not totally related to this game)
Addazio spent a good portion of his radio show this week talking about how tough the opener is regardless of your opponent. He feels the key is to come away with the W. I understand where he is coming from, but also think it is very limiting. Every year there are opportunities to schedule big games on the opening weekend. When he thinks he has a good team (like this year) Addazio should be more aggressive and schedule an opener that gets people excited and makes a statement in Week 1.

Three Simple Keys
1. Pressure on Ford early. UMass is going to try to establish the pass early. BC needs to disrupt that and get Ford out of the pocket.
2. Run, run and then run some more. UMass had one of the worst run defenses in the country last year. BC needs to hammer them there and not look back.
3. Be careful with the ball. I only see this game being interesting if BC turns the ball over a lot.

Gambling Notes
-- Addazio is 4-1 in openers at BC
-- BC is 21-5-1 all time against UMass
-- Addazio is 16-16 at Alumni
The current line is BC-18

Factoid
Sadly this game is not on local TV. It is frustrating that ESPN, the ACC and BC can't fix that.

Scoreboard Watching
Wake Forest plays an improving Tulane team at Tulane Thursday night. The Deacons will be our first critical game. The Tulane matchup is a chance to see the impact of Wake's early suspensions. I am hoping Wake struggles and comes into our game a mess.

I hope to see...
Matt McDonald play for an extended time during mop up duty. The backup QB always gets to be the most popular guy around. I bought into his hype this summer, so now I want to see the kid play in a real game.

BC is in trouble if...
Dillon gets hurt. He is the most important player on the team and the most critical player for the season. He can't get hurt in this game. We could still beat UMass without him, but it would make a winning season less likely.

Overall
There may be some rust early. UMass may make a play or two. But I don't see this as close or interesting. I think we physically overmatch them and win with ease.
Final Score: BC 35, UMass 13

Hope you're right. If we get comfortable lead, I'd like to see Daz let AB & his receivers get some game reps putting it in air. Let Sauce get 125 & 3 TDs by the half & then hit showers while AB tosses to Sweeney etc al

But the schedules are made years in advance.

To add insult to injury, the local ACC affiliate here in Boston is showing Furman at Clemson.

Clemson. We are going to beat their asses.

I hope so - I'm flying up for that one.

31-13, Eagles over ZooMass

It was nice of Jarmond to take some of the heat off Daz and screw up that TV situation. That's just inexcusable, pitiful work on his part. How do you let that happen? How we do not have a fan or alumni internet broadcast for all games at Alumni and Conte at this juncture is an absolute joke, and a total missed opportunity to maintain and boost the fan base, as well as the coffers. BU sure has one up on us there..

BC 35, UMass 17. It's interesting for 1 1/2 quarters-- longer than we'd like, but BC wears them out and when UMass needs to turn to its bench in any meaningful way, it's over.

Dillon gets his yards and then David Bailey looks good in garbage time.

I have no problem playing this game in Week 1. CFB is the only sport that does not have a preseason, so this is a sensible starting point. That said, this game also serves to dramatically weaken the argument that we have some sort of impossible schedule.

Knucklehead said...

BU doesn't even exist. All you need to look at is who represents the 15th district of New York. Their finest.

It's available on the WatchESPN app so I would think you can just cast to your TV if you have Chromecast.

ESPN Analyst Jesse Palmer just said Boston College could surprise a lot of people this year.

Let's start Saturday afternoon with a dominating performance.

Go BC - beat UMass decisively.

Not taking my mind off UMass, but as Knuckle pointed out in the previous thread, we can get a peek at Purdue in West Lafayette and Wake Forest in New Orleans right now!

Knucklehead said...

Purdue is not impressive on the first two drives.

Purdue coach is a psycho, he won't be there long.

MilitantEagle said...

Purdue looking better now with that true freshman running back. He'll be tough to stop.

Knucklehead said...

True. They are looking quick and more comfortable. Very good oline. No pressure on last two drives.

Train tracks on the sidelines is cool.

Over is looking good. Dropped fron 52.5 to 51 20 minutes before the game.

Back to the bar.

Knucklehead said...

Ohhhh 14-14 just as I spoke. NW is fucked too slow.

Crossing routes kill BC. Frohm is a petrino guy. He loves crossers.

Wake offense stinks

Purdue defense stinks

BC can/should win both

Why aren’t you guys watching the big Civil CONNflict grudge match?

How could Furman Clemson be more appropriate in New England than BC UMass? Does BC have any influence over that?

NYCEagle said...

After watching about a half of each Purdue/Wake games last night, I believe starting 5-0 is a must. A loss to either, even on the road, would be inexcusable based on talent differential alone

Knucklehead said...

Yes. 6-1 going into the Miami game, at least.

BC and Jarmond have no control over the TV issue. It is a function of the multi-tier tv contract structures across networks, and the lack of competitive ACC games this week.

It is just strange that Alcorn State-Georgia Tech and James Madison-NC State, two FCS vs middle of the pack ACC teams are selected for TV over one of the only three FBS vs FBS ACC matchups on Saturday. I know it was 26 years ago, but when BC had that breakout season under Coughlin in '92, they were scheduled to play at Tulane a week or two after winning at Penn State. The game was not scheduled for TV, but NESN quickly was able to gather a crew and hauled down to New Orleans and broadcasted the game. It's too bad that conference TV contracts these days would prevent that situation from reoccurring. I just looked at NBC Sports Boston's schedule for Saturday, and they are showing nothing but the same Celtics documentaries they have shown 50 times previously.

I agree, I know Purdue can score. I do think we’re faster on defense than Northweatern. But ny confidence really comes from the fact that I have zero confidence in their ability to stop us on the ground. I fully expect BC to play bully ball this year, and with the exception of Clemson and Miami, I’m not sure who else will be able to stop us. I think even if we told Purdue were gonna line up and were only gonna run it, you have 4 plays to stop us from getting 10 yards, 0% chance. Wake will be a non factor based on what they showed last night. Decent numbers against Tulane should correlate to poor numbers against a much more talented and faster BC defense

Stupid exclamation points. Douche.

TGS said...

From the moron, aka Khead last night:

NW is fucked too slow.

Of course, NW went on to win the game.

Knucklehead said...

They went up early and held on. I was wrong but you didn't watch. Get off your mother.

Knucklehead said...

I hit the over, of course. So I win as usual. Stupid bitch. I own you and your Providence College flunky. Keep trying.

Knucklehead said...

And you like Clemson, so you are obviously a lowlife.

It's BC Football Eve! One of my favorite nights of the year. We will start with the traditional dinner of Flutie Flakes, clam chowder and Natty Ice. Then, I will gather the young Eagle kids in a circle and tell the epic story of Flutie to Phelan, followed by a showing of David Gordon's left-footed kick right into Touchdown Jesus. Finally, with thoughts of Herzy and Ryan and Kuechley dancing in my head, I will struggle to fight my excitement and get to sleep. It's BC Football Eve!

Our game is on Direct TV at 790. This is ECEHD, which has replaced the old "Gameplan" and "Full Court". Check with Direct TV to see if ECEHD is included in your sports package.

More changes...as of August 20, 2018, ESPN + is new subscription service, which, at first glance, looks like it is taking a lot of the free games which used to be on ESPN 3. Bottom Line is that Watch ESPN may not have the game you're looking for. You may have to shell out for ESPN+. Check back in a week after things settle down.

No word yet on what happens with College Basketball on ESPN3.

ItsI torture having to wait until the Wake game to see the Eagles on TV.

John said...

Thanks Lenny - I am lucky to have Direct TV 790.

After golf tomorrow morning I'll be fighting the UGA Bulldogs fans going to their 3:30pm game so I can see BC at 1:00pm at my house.

This will be my first experience in Athens on game day. 🙂

Go BC! Beat UMass.
