BC survives uneven performance for win at Wake

This was a very prescient tweet during the game.

This game never should have been as close as it was. But special teams mistakes and predictable play calling negated the huge talent advantage. Fortunately talent won out. Lots to like about the game. I just hope Addazio is able to clean up the stuff that hurt BC before we play teams who are our equal.

The good news is that there were enough highlight and Dillon moments that BC will probably be ranked soon.

I will try to have the grades up Saturday (and I will also try to get to the Holy Cross thoughts).

You can’t blame Daz for Walker dropping a easy punt and Carlson for not catching a easy snap. You can’t, those were just bad individual plays

That was a ass kicking and if we weren’t lifelong BC fans we wouldn’t have been nervous

Let’s go get Purdue

Bravesbill said...

Well you can blame him for both. Walker should have tried to fair catch the punt esp with the traffic around him. Carlson couldn’t catch the snap but he also decided to try to punt the ball with three people around him. Eat it at that point. There was another missed PAT. Mental errors and a lack of talent can be blamed on Daz.

ObserverCollege said...

Blasphemy. The players failed. Coach doesn’t fail to blast through a 9-man front. Coach didn’t muff that punt. Coach didn’t get his kick blocked. Coach didn’t blow the PAT. Over and over, the players failed.
Coach needs to bring in Tom O’Brien as a media relations consultant. TOB brilliantly pinned the blame for team setbacks where it belonged, on the players. His passive-aggressive comments after the 43-17 loss to Syracuse in 2004 was a masterpiece in nailing the players with the blame for failing to reach the BCS. Coach Addazio needs that to rub off on him, so he’s ready if/when people try to blame him when the players fail. More than anything, TOB could push the press to understand that 6 or 7 wins is the best you’re going to do at BC.

Yeah, pretty vapid at this point, above.

What do you blame Daz for? He doesn’t call the plays. He doesn’t call the coverages. So he should be blame-free.

You people are crazy..BC just won a tough road win and you want to argue stupid points. This is the best BC team since Ryan and maybe since Futie. Enjoy it.

Does the team need to improve..sure and Daz need to fix the issues..however the two horrific special team turnovers have nothing to do with coaching..Walker just dropped the ball and Carlson just dropped the snap

I'm more concerned with the defense allowing not 1, but 2 100-yard rushers. Granted, there were a lot of plays to defend and they were very tired on a hot night, but I'm a little worried going forward with this defense.

I am not a big fan of Daz, and he clearly struggles with in game management, but I have to give him credit for talent acquisition and team motivation.

If you are going to lambast him for in-game coaching, which is valid, you should decide if he is failing in his other responsibilities. If you believe that he is failing in all areas, then it makes sense that you feel he should go.

As long as Daz continues to recruit talent and motivate the locker room I am ok with him as head coach assuming he delegates enough coaching responsibility to those that know better. Once he loses the locker room, and it will eventually happen particularly if the team has back to back losing seasons, it will be time to call for his head.

Until then let’s hopefully enjoy a strong run of winning seasons and some meaningful bowl games. I suspect this post will be unpopular but I am enjoying a nice 3-0 start and some positive momentum.

This game was sloppy and we got lots to improve on, but there’s way too much negativity in the comments. You’ll take an ACC road win no matter how you get it. Glad we got this game played and out of harms way. Actually looked like weather was a non factor. Also major props to Anthony Brown. He looked good. Now let’s win game 4!

Eagle Boston - Wake might be/is the 2nd best team in the Atlantic next to Clemson. We have Clemson at home in late November. Ville & FSU stink and we have Cuse at home. NC State is suspect at best.

BC is in control of there own destiny on here out with that win. What are you talking about???

Geezer eagle said...

Question for the dazoshit apologists. How do you defend a coach who can't recruit a kicker in five years? How do you defend a coach who's main play is Dillon up the middle? How do you defend a coach who's defense gets worse each year?

Georgia Eagle, it's simple. We won last night. The bad plays kept Wake in the game, and Daz owned up to it saying he needs to improve that area.

As for Dillon, obviously something Daz did worked because the dude wracked up over 180 yards.

We won the game. We're 3-0. The team is clicking. BC football is fun to watch again.

I’ve said this before: Daz definitely knows how to evaluate talent and he is a great salesman. To his credit he has assembled the most talented roster we have seen in quite a while.

That may qualify him to be a talking head on ESPN or as a member of Urban’s staff, but it does not make him a great head coach. As we have seen, preparation, discipline, creativity, attention to detail and in-game management are not his strong suits.

He is the highest paid employee at BC. He should be expected to recruit, field and motivate players of all talent levels to excel on the field and off. While, yes, players need to execute, it is HIS responsibility to prepare them to do so and to adjust when they don’t.

That was a good win last night. Our players and their talent prevailed despite our biggest weakness: coaching. Let’s hope that gets figured out this year.

A lot to like on offense. Skill guys get most mentions, but the O line gave AB some nice time to make those deep throws.

eagletix said...

Aside from the silly comment about Wake being second best team in Atlantic, I think there is plenty more questions than answers after that game. Playcalling dubious, defensive line perplexing, special teams really shaky, etc.....Realistically, Wake showed a staunch dline, weak secondary, and caught BC unprepared for quick pulse offense that ran 105 offensive plays. A win is a win. But, this team hss lots to prove going forward. A two cupcake start came home to roost.

Shabby1011 said...

No one is saying Daz is great Head Coach. He coaches too conservative at times and his clock management in the past has been suspect.

However BC has won 5 straight ACC road games. I imagine no one else in ACC can claim that status currently. That is sign of well prepared team.

Take away those two bad plays on special teams and they win that game by 20+ and Dillon despite having almost 200 yards didn’t play great.

I’ll be first to criticize the Dazzler when warranted but after that game I don’t see it. Another big game next weekend. Beat Purdue and we are 5-0 going into NC State

Knucklehead said...

HA. This game should 65-17. Hartman is horrible. He threw 2 ints but there were 3 more dropped by our secondary, Dazzlers fault. Both of TDs were 5 yards quick slants that he snuck in for completions. Those plays never work(end Pats Seattle Superbowl).

The interior line needs another player. He should be giving someone pt there in the these early games. Convert an olineman if need be.

If the kicking is a joke next week I will get uncomfortable with it. It is boarder line shady right now. Like game fixing shady. Look at the spreads.

Good win on the road against a team that gave everything it had. They tried hard to beat us, talking shit and acting like assholes. We didn't look to stressed by them at all.

Brown and Dillion 2020.

NYCEagle said...

Eagletix are you serious? The play action was deadly. Saw that confirmed by observations from multiple national CFB writers. They loaded the box and we beat them just the way you have to when a team does that. We put on tape last night if you’re gonna gameplan on stopping Dillon, we are more than capable of beating you over the top. How good did the receivers and Brown look? Oline gave him all day and did a decent enough job opening holes for AJ against 8 man fronts. I’m not sure how you can blame the special teams errors on Daz. A muffed punt and a high snap are out of his control. The one area of legitimate concern is run D. However, Wake runs the run pass option to near perfection. They will rack up yards against other good defenses as well. Anyone who isn’t happy after tonight just wants to see us lose out of some weird obsession with hating their own team.

bceagle93 said...

There is a difference between being happy with the win and being satisfied with the performance.

Absolutely happy with the win and the prospects for this season. Go BC! But the game was not locked up until way too late in the 4th qtr. Understandable if that was Clemson or Va Tech, but that was Wake with a freshman QB and a shaky secondary. Offense output aside, far from satisfied with the overall performance.

Thomas said...

Couple thoughts -

1. The conservative play calling in the first half drove me nuts. Zero passes on first down til the TD to White with about 3 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. We will not beat better teams with this kind of predictability.

2. Dillon is an absolute superstar and can win some games almost by himself, but the games that will make the difference between a good season and a special season (Miami, VT, Clemson) will be decided by the arm of Anthony Brown.

3. There is nothing wrong with playing imperfect games and winning, especially this early in the season. Improvement should be expected. Playing your best football in September isn't ideal for anyone, let alone a team with BC's backloaded schedule. That being said, does anyone think we have any chance of making even a 40 yard field goal to win a game?

bceagle91 said...

40 yards? Very doubtful. We've missed an extra point in each game this year for goodness sake. The kicking game is dreadful.

bceagle93 said...

And that has been the case for how many years? But that is not the head coach’s fault....

JBQ said...

Just as a point of fact, the kicker's dad is the coordinator for Monday Night Football. Zach Allen appears to be a hothead as does Connor Strachan. Allen negated a holding call by leveling the quarterback. Strachan almost tore the head off a receiver and then was targeted in return. The refs also missed a big snapping penalty and a hit out of bounds on BC.---There were plenty of mistakes on special teams. The missed extra point could have been deadly. Carlson and Walker should be coached better. Even against Holy Cross, there were special team mistakes that led to 14 points. It's the little things that will beat BC.---Like wow Wyatt Ray with your four sacks. AB looked great when they packed the box. Still, it is the little things.

This game was decided by Brown. So every game is going to be decided by Brown. His accuracy improved dramatically. He didn't have to scramble much and make sick dart passes to the right person in the right location(no pick opportunity). His 30 minutes with Brady this summer paid the fuck off. Big time.

We will see how he deals with a pass rush later in the season.

Knucklehead said...

Allen did not level the QB he pulled him down after the play and after the rat Hartman was talking shit to him earlier in the game. Be real JBQ.

CT said...

Dillon is responsible for Brown’s success. Plain and simple. He had all day to throw because of Dillon. Wake’s Dline had no desire to rush the passer when Dillon was in the backfield. Especially since Dillon is no threat in the “throw” game. Not going back and forth over this. Football 101. There’s a reason the offense has taken off since Dillon was named the starter. Brown played well. Except for Glines TD, dudes were wide open. I hope he gets better throwing on the move, but his arm strength is impressive. And it’s easy to forget that AB has very little experience. What, six games last year, less than a game this yr before last night. Good stuff.

DTs need to DT more. They ran 100 plays because the run defense was poo poo. Torres looks like a find, in the back end. True freshman qbs make dumb throws, Wake guy did a bunch. Cheevers dropped an easy INT. Torres, too. Stop the run. It’s college ball. Most qbs are pretty substandard. That’s why you can’t get more than 10 decent ones in the NFL.

I think that we can all agree on one thing here and that is the fact that last night's game was exponentially more enjoyable--both in terms of how BC played and the outcome--than this debacle from 3 years ago:

http://www.espn.com/college-football/boxscore?gameId=400756947

A lot to like, a few things not to like about last night. One thing that irked me was not be able to get a first down with power running when we got the ball back with 5:45 to go. With a worn down defense and Dillon, we should be able to pick up 10 in that situation and will need to at some point later in the season to really ice an even closer game.

CT, Dillon didn't make Brown more accurate. The oline and Brown made Brown more accurate. Brown learns the offense and the progressions not Dillon.

That was the most erroneous sports statement I have ever heard.

Knucklehead said...

Lose the Dillon passifier.

Honestly he looked slower than he did last season. Still the best back in America. Palm out and ball tucked away.

Watched the Daz post game presser. I will give him this: he is great in front of a camera. Passion and intensity gets people excited. And good to see him take some accountability for missed plays -- goes a long way with the players (and fans).

He's got these guys believing. This will be an interesting season.

Daz's sideline demeanor seemed to be much more controlled than years past. Shots of him after the special teams miscues showed him surprisingly restrained. Would be a welcome development.

John said...

Addazio.set AJ up by announcing on ESPN that he was going to have the kid "run the rock" 30 plus times. The OLine caught Wake early and gave AJ a huge hole.

After that, Wake loaded up on the kid, but our HC ran it 30 more times. AJ can't be expected to run through 4 or 5 guys straight up.

I imagine Loeffler do has his marching orders - build your plan around running AJ 30 plus times. Yes he is great, but mix it up a little, please.

John said...

Dillon looks like a good blocker as well, helping out the OLine.

NYCEagle said...

I feel pretty enthusiastic about this team. The game was much more of a mismatch than the score would suggest. If they clean up the special teams stuff it should have been a 42-20 game. And if Cheevers doesn’t mistime his jump it’s 42-13. The eye test told it all. There was a noticeable talent gap out there. BC is closer to Clemson than they are to Wake in that regard. When was the last time we could say that?

I think one of the truest signs of a dominant team is the ability to not play your best game, but to still dig deep enough to find a way to win. This team has that in spades

John said...

I think my concern with the way Coach Addazio uses AJ might well result in an injury for the player.

But who am I? It forces the defense to account for AJ for sure, and as we saw, receivers are able to get open. The defense has to pick its poison.

But they load up so much, AJ is running right into multiple tough guys who are keying on him all night.

Go BC - relax for a day, focus on Purdue and go into West Lafayette loaded for bear.

Thank you and BEAT PURDUE!

DCJay said...

Six touchdowns averaging 41 yards per play! That's pretty unusual, isn't it? Play calling that produces such long strikes does not seem to fit the label "conservative."

Napolean Bonaparte said...

I wouldn't get too carried away guys. Yes - looks like we have a good team and there are good reasons to be optimistic. But we just beat Wake. It's a long season with a lot of tough games ahead against some teams that are loaded. One game at a time - really looking forward to Purdue.

Dont agree with this Chris dude, nor his previous tweets (Defense wasn't an A)- Yes Daz isn't perfect, but there was much more to see than that from the Wake Game
