BC can't put FSU away and loses heartbreaker

I know Steve Addazio knows more about football than I do. There are nuances that I am probably oblivious to and I know the time commitment of his job is unfathomable. He is able to lead a staff and roster of more than 100 people. He is also able to find and recruit teenagers. But I think he, like many coaches, can get so caught up in the flow of the game or his cognitive biases (whether it is play calling, clock, player usage, etc.) that he limits what his talented roster can do. If you play too conservatively and play to keep it close, you are going to invite the other team to steal a game. We saw it with TOB and Spaz. And it has happened to Addazio often. Tonight's loss to FSU might be the most frustrating

Brown didn't play well and I put much of that on the staff. If he wasn't 100%, then maybe you go with Perry. Or you put a gameplan around Brown that would help his return. Even the D, which had some really good moments, also didn't adjust enough.

7-6 is looming. I pray that Addazio can avoid it. I want to be more than that. I think he can still do something more, but I know he will never put together that truly special season.

ATL you seem to have good resources in department but not sure if you have connections to new admin.

The fact Daz only has 1 year left on deal makes me think he could be in trouble. Usually coaches are extended way before they get down to end of contract if they are going to stay for simple reason of recruiting.

I think this loss is devastating, not only to to staff but to players. They know how poorly FSU is coached and disciplined. The players have to be disheartened and you could see Allen is.

As I have posted to Daz credit he will leave program in better shape then was left to him by Spaz. There is good talent, you have Dillon a legit Heisman candidate next year for another year and roster has decent depth. Further I wouldn’t expect a lot of transfers cause families chose BC for entire experience.

At this point I just can’t see how new admin could bring Daz back and expect energy around new fundraising effort and filling stadium next year with poor home schedule.

Thoughts?

Still waiting for ATL to explicitly call for his head. Seems to be dancing all around the elephant in the room.

Maryland lost a heartbreaker as they played to win.

BC's loss cannot be classified as a heartbreaker, because we played not to lose, showed no imagination, no creativity,no intestinal fortitude at crunch time and played right into their hands like they knew we would.

When Taggart kicked a field goal to come within 5 points, I knew we were in trouble.

Addazio - out prepared and out coached by a coach who has all but lost his team - a team that has flat out quit during several games this year, just as they quit on us last year.

But Addazio coached to lose - sorry, I can't include the regular "not" in front of the to lose.

BJK - from my phone.

Ever to Excel, Steve. You talk about what it means to be a BC Man!

But you never really say exactly what that is. Obviously it doesn't mean "Ever to (Strive to) Excel.

To you it means something else and that's the rub.

Yeah heartbreak can’t be used to describe this loss. More like expected.

That game was an embarrassment. Jeff Smith needs to be put on ice with Colton Lichtenburg. Players chocked.

Should have gone for it on 4th and 1.5 late. Leaving it up to the defense FSU torched them on the previous drive was a bad call. Coaches sucked.

Ben Petrulas eyes said it all after the Jeff Smith dropped pass. He couldn't fucking believe they we're going to lose.

Dazzler can fix it all with a win against Syracuse. Vintage BC to leave a good season up to the last weekend.

Game was a total embarrassment.

Daz is done. Book it.

A win against Syracuse is going to somehow magically fix this debacle of a season.

bceagle93 said...

This is heartbreaking because this team deserves better. They deserved to be more competitive against Clemson than they were. They deserved to go to a great post season bowl. And they deserve a better in-game manager and leader.

Daz has many strengths. He is a great salesman, fiery motivator and has recruited many good, talented kids some of whom he has been able to motivate to overachieve. And as Shabby stated, he has left the program much better than it was when he got here. For that, he should be commended. But he is not the right man to be one of our University’s highest profile ambassadors as head coach of the Boston College football team.

The success of the Greater Heights athletic campaign, launched by our AD, hinges on the fulfillment of very clear objectives. Steve Addazio has proven he cannot live up to those standards.

There should be very little debate at this point. Thanks and best of luck.

This team hasn’t progressed much, sad to say. Bottom line is we lost to a bad time, so that doesn’t say much. Spadazzios post game conference pretty much said it all, he accepted no responsibility and the players missed on opportunities. He embarrasses me.

As normal Daz doesn't take any responsibility in the presser, just talks about missed opportunities. What a fool.

If he’s brought back next year MJ should be fired.

Isn’t

My guess is Christian is first to go then Daz. Meaning he gets 2019 season. I would be surprised if MJ did two money sport hires over next 6 months.

They lost to a TERRIBLE team. The coach is incompetent with respect to game day decisions, play calling etc. The fact that he has been here and remains here for so many years is why BC is irrelevant. It is really a shame.

STL_eagle said...

Daz won’t be fired although the writing is on the wall. That said I doubt that BC will extend him and will basically use next year as a black and white decision point...8-4 or better new contract....anything less see you later. Syracuse game won’t make much difference other than providing an indication which way Daz is trending.

FSU is bad. I mean, really bad.

When you hook your horse to an inaccurate QB in an up-tempo, power-run game(?), throwing off of bootlegs over and over and over again, then wonder why your defense can’t finish(?), because there is no such thing as a quick strike Dillon run off left tackle against 8 men in the box, you get what you deserve. Daz has no imagination. No ability to adapt or change. It really is embarrassing. I am not one to call for jobs, but this is year six. Clearly, Brown is rather ordinary, and Daz thinks because something worked at UF it must work here (though ask UF fans what they think of him...ha).

When your offense is suspect, quit the up-tempo thing, give your best asset a break (remember Daz, when you blew the Ga Tech game you said you wanted the ball in the hands of your DEFENSE).

The whole concept makes no sense. Especially when you run off the tackles on every first down. The QB, line, and RBs are built for a pro style grind. You don’t run 85 plays with an average QB. Or a banged up Dillon. It just defies comprehension. The defense is above average. Use them by not using them. Slow the game down.

When you watch other college teams, the schematic differences are astounding. Though, what should we expect when your coach refers to passing as the “throw game?”

The service academies run more entertaining offenses. So over six years of this. Let’s see what our new AD thinks. Might BC be content with the ACC bowl split revenue? Everyone keeps their jobs because Clemson funds them? Seems like it.

The minute Daz didn’t go for it on 4th and 1 the guy behind me said. “That’s it. They’re going to lose,” and we knew he was right. It was unfathomable to me that he chickened out, esp. as he’d gone for it on 4th before. The bad decisions Daz makes are another level of bad-truly mystifying. And what infuriated me even more is his refusal to take any responsibility. This should have been a special year and that’s been lost, in large part due to Daz’s monumental ineptitude. I can’t even begin to imagine how bad next week will be against an angry Syracuse team. Daz must go, and the sooner the better. All eyes are on Jarmond.

That game was so trademark Daz in so many places that it's difficult to list them all. But, hey, let's try:

-AJ Dillon looked healthy over his first 10 carries or so. He had speed and cut-back ability that had been missing over the last few weeks. He did not look healthy thereafter. Nonetheless, he carried the ball well over 30 times. That's not good for him and it sure wasn't good for our offense.

-Florida State had no ability whatsoever to defend a mid-to-long range passing game. That has been apparent all year. Yet, it took us 2 quarters to figure it out.

-On the third down before the key 4th down where we did not go for it, we ran straight up the middle...which is not a play call that makes sense unless you plan to go for it. Keeping the ball on the ground when there's 3 minutes left and the other team has 3 time outs is meaningless.

-How can you play so conservatively on offense at the end of the game and then fail to put in a nickel or dime defense, so that we have a redshirt frosh CB isolated against their best receiver. That was as easy of a pitch and a catch as Florida State has had all year.

-We would have been absolutely crushed by any team that was not awful. We will never -- and I can be hyperbolic, but I believe this to be literally true -- face a worse FSU team. And we let them hang around for no reason at all.

-AB is not great, but he's more than good enough to win with.

There is no chance that Daz will be fired; none whatsoever. He will be extended and you're fooling yourself if you think otherwise. In this area above all others, we are BC. In this, his 6th year with the school, we are 2-3 on the road; the toughest 4 annual matchups on our schedule (FSU, Va Tech, Louisville, and CLemson) will never be collectively this bad again; and our most impressive win on the year is likely Temple. Next year we will need to replace a number of playmakers on our lines. We have reached our ceiling and this is it.

The only reason we got the ball back with 52 seconds left in the first half is because Daz did not call a time out on FSU's fourth down. We should have had the ball back with 1:30+ left.

I have been watching college football for 40 years. I have never, ever seen FSU so weak. They are a terrible team. We had the talent edge, the experience edge, and we still found a way to lose. Some pretty basic points: a) put in a QB who can actually throw the ball consistently and with accuracy. Hint: it appears you have two sitting on the bench b) don’t play injured players. What is going on with AJ is wrong c) get a new head coach and with that a new OC. Call a game that gives your players a chance to win.

Here is what I want to know before I fire Addazio because of this loss. Steve, did you wait until game day to make a decision or communicate the decision as to whether or not AB was going to start? If yes then he should be canned.

The team needs to know who the starter is going to be the day before the game.

I have seen more passes dropped by Jeff Smith than any other receiver or TE at BC in 30 years. He is the most inconsistent receiver the school has ever had. He needs his eyes checked and a session at McLean in Belmont. Honestly. He has been playing for 4 years the criticism is warranted, moderate and something he should have heard 3 years ago.

. . . The FG kicker is the spitting image and needs the same support.

I need a break from this Addazio insanity. Coaching-wise, the individual is a POS.

ObserverCollege said...

Coach Addazio has rebuilt this program from a garbage dump to a legitimate midcard foil who can complement the ACC powers to generate decent ratings. Coach Addazio has the integrity to think beyond himself, to transfer the "Ever to Excel" motto to the Atlantic Coast Conference as a whole. My colleagues and I behind the curtain absolutely love Coach Addazio for thinking of the greater financial impact to each and every game he coaches.

With Coach Addazio, you can bank on a solid seven wins per season so long as he has the quarterback and running back he intended to use. In each of those seasons, Coach Addazio banged out seven wins. He never wound up with a 6-7 record, nor with an 8-5 record. 7-6, season after season. And now he's cruising toward yet another 7-6 season, having locked the seven wins leading up to the Clemson primetime Saturday (and GameDay) experience.

I can't tell you how valuable such reliability is to those of us who invest in college football and build our portfolios on the endeavor. You can't guide a Clemson or, when they're on, a FSU or a Miami to national championships without having reliable midcard foils. You need somebody to beat the FCS and low FBS teams, while staying close to the good teams. That's how you, as a playoff or an at-large New Year's Day contender, maintain your SoS while you know you're going to win.

Ideally we'd rely on our officiating crews to keep things in balance, to protect our top program that year so they can make it to the playoff. Yet there's variation not just across our crews. We can't get our Tim Donaghys into each and every game. Plus, with college kids, you USUALLY never know if a team is going to win because some scrub goes nuts.

That's where Coach Addazio comes in. If the conference needs his opponent to win, he'll run a predictable offense. If his QB seems to be getting hot, he'll run the ball up the gut. If his team seems to be passionate and threatening the opponent's status, he'll turtle.

As BC fans, you might find this frustrating. You see the talent on the field, and wonder why BC just can't get over the hump. You fail to understand that you're NOT SUPPOSED TO get over the hump. You're supposed to be Sisyphus, just falling short to maintain the predictable, the status quo.

In exchange, you enjoy a regular share of conference bowl revenues, plus good tidings from your coach's peers and favorable national media coverage in appreciation for your selflessness.

Now, if Jesus could die for our sins, can't you do so also?

Picked up this comment from a Georgia fan on another board:
"I hate FSU. Why are you playing man to man with two minutes left and a 5-point lead? 2 safeties, a rover, 3 on the line before the 50, 4 on the line inside the 35.

It is football 101. Bleh. Good luck rest of the year. You have a feisty team in need of a QB"

- 4th and 1 on FSU's 40 and he can't find a way to get a single yard. He obviously lost all confidence in AB and the OL. Players have to be demoralized. No use of Devon Jones.

- A 1 point game with 52 seconds left in the half and he takes a knee. You throw three long passes downfield and maybe make one or get an interference call - and have a shot at three or more. Worst case is an interception deep in their territory. Again, no faith in his QB and OL. Hell, if McDonald has a better arm - then put him in and wing it. AB has limited skill set for short passes along the sidelines to move the ball and kill the clock. BC not prepared to make those plays.

- This was worse than the muff against Wake Forest when he let the clock ran out.

- $2.5 million for this - demoralizing. IUPUI - demoralizing. Hockey - WTF. $150 million based on women's lacrosse? Don't think so.

- Continues to play a QB who cannot make throws and get first downs in short yardage. Has no backup QB prepared or qualified to play.

- Field goal kicking - 6 year problem never resolved.

Observer — I know this is satire, but the scary thing is I actually thought about this after the Clemson game. It was something weird how everything unfolded leading up to Gameday to post-game. Maybe it’s just Daz, but it definitely had a WWE feel to it. The reality is that it IS better for the conference that Clemson is the anointed face that runs the table and makes the playoff. BC, Wake, Duke and UNC — we’re all just the Bam Bam Bigelow and Leaping Lanny Poffo to the Hulkamania. And everyone makes $$$....I would actually feel BETTER if this was true vs the reality that it is probably just gross ineptitude.

"ONLY 9-4 saves" Coach Addazio?

Um, 9-4 gets Coach Addazio the USC job. That would be fully 12.5-25% more wins than the 7 or 8 that's the best you're going to do at Boston College.

Getting to 7 wins with Dillon and Brown hobbled throughout the year? Give the man a 5-year extension to take advantage of the new facilities you have.

ObserverCollege said...

You won't know what you have until Coach Addazio moves on, and you are once again shunned in the college football community.

Tom Coughlin didn't respect the college football hierarchy. I'll never forget what he did to poor Lou Holtz that awful Saturday afternoon in South Bend, Indiana. He should have known the kids would have had a letdown after beating FSU, and he should have gone vanilla that game. But he was so focused on his NFL resume that he undercut Coach Holtz.

And that 2007 BC team of Jagodzinski's? The one that, in Kirk Herbstreit's words, "held hostage" the #2 national ranking? Abominable. They showed such selfishness, such rudeness throughout that season. BC should NEVER have been allowed to win at VT and at Clemson. Never. To do so caused such unnecessary heartburn to so many more deserving programs in the ACC, SEC, Big-10 and Pac-10.

Tom O'Brien was a pretty good guy; he tended to know his place. We'll always appreciate the consideration he showed in the 2001 game against Miami (benching William Green), as well as holding back on his game planning against Syracuse in 2004. Blaming the players postgame for failing to execute was a nice touch, one that Coach Addazio did well to follow last evening.

Coach Addazio, however, really strikes the perfect balance. A modern-day Chuck Wepner, or remiscent of the various midcard stooges to Hulkamania as bceagle93 so aptly described above. We're all lucky to have him.

PutYourChuckieDukesUp said...

The real issue with this game is that it was lost in the first half. BC should have been up by at least two touchdowns at the half. Having first and goal at the two yard line, then getting not 1 but 2 false start penalties, followed by a missed field goal was comical. Florida State was basically trying to give the game to BC in the first half but we wouldn't take it (0 points off of two turnovers).
