Urban Meyer: The BC Fan Rorschach Test

As I was watching the Rose Bowl and Urban Meyer retired (again), I first thought "he'll coach again." Next my thoughts drifted to the ultimate "what if" of would I want him coaching my team. Despite thinking he embodies so many of the consistent flaws in some college coaches -- he's myopic, he's hypocritical, he's a bully, he's thin-skinned, -- I still admitted that I would welcome him to BC in a minute. The guy might be the best game manager in the last 30 years, certainly knows how to build a program and has won everywhere.

As for it ever happening, it won't. I know that. But Meyer's connection to Jarmond and the slight chance that he'd want to comeback and do it differently and the "right way" means that there is the slightest of slight chance. Like getting struck by lightning. Meyer's snakey history of picking his spots where he can win big and quickly, and the fact that taking the BC job would mean undercutting one of his former assistants probably more than offsets Jarmond's history with him.

But I am willing to admit my hypocrisy even on the hypothetical. I want BC to win and he's proven he can do it. But to give you a sense of how BC fans see ourselves, all you have to do is look at the replies to my tweet about Meyer.

Some would never want Meyer and some would be over the moon. Very few are in the middle. It shows that BC fans value what BC stands for and that we are different. I think we could still be BC regardless of our coach.

I just hope that one day we get a coach at Meyer's level and he stays around long enough to win something big.

No no and no.

The man is practically a criminal, in that world at least. Do you even know the half of what happened at Florida?

OSU has no concern about ethics. Zero. None. It is a wastebasket for rules.

Meyer is the guy you hire to complete the Faustian bargain.

Jesus. What is going on?

Not knowing anything never stops you from chiming in, huh? It’s like talking to a six year old.

You embarrass yourself with every ignorant thing you type.

And yet, you are so self-assured in that ignorance. It truly is astounding.

Go read a book.

No. Myers kind of recruiting and coaching works at football factories, not at BC with our values and ethics . Remember the TE who ended up murdering people?

Philip said...

I still havent seen anyone offer any proof of any wrongdoing. I have never seen his programs on probation, only winning. He didnt kill anyone. Whatever happened to Catholic ideals of redemption and forgiveness.

eagletix said...

Hey, Georgia, know who recruited murderer to FLA in the first place? None other than your present head coach.

Either ATL is just looking to stir the pot or he is seriously delusional (or maybe both, considering his wish that Chip Kelly would come to the Heights a few years back). No way Urban would come here with the restrictions on recruiting, no way the admin would want to hire someone with an ego as big as his and no way they would pay him anywhere close to what he would want.

Urban Meyer cares about one thing and one thing only: Urban Meyer. That was made clear earlier this year. We don't need to compromise our integrity for him or coaches like him that put themselves over the greater University community. No Chip Kelly. No Bruce Pearl. No Rick Pitino. They cannot and will never succeed here -- so why even talk about it?

So right now comments are running 50-50. Interesting. The win at all costs lobby is strong in this forum.

Totally academic - when was the last time BC ever hired away a head coach in basketball or football who was a proven consistent winner with nationally ranked division 1 teams? It's laughable to think that kind of talent would even consider a backwater like BC.

Very true.

Urban Meyer is not walking through that door and never will but the point ATL is making is a good one, the loyal BC fan wants a winner.

Daz and his tenure here can be debated and has been at nausea, ultimately he is 7 win Steve and let’s leave it at that. He is good enough to just be not good enough. Even at a Catholic school, God and his weather isn’t on his side to get to 8 wins. We could do worse then Daz but many believe we could do better and that’s what this is about.

Regarding Men’s Hoops someone referenced the difference in hire between JC and Buzz at VT which was the same year. BC program was in much better shape and BC has much more storied hoop history then VT. VT emptied the bank and since Buzz has made VT a annual NCAA team and this year have legit shot at Sweet Sixteen. BC did not and went very conservative. I like JC and think he is fine as a coach but results are not there and losing to Hartford 2x in 3 years and not making a NCAA tourney in five is simply unacceptable.

Unfortunately the end of 2018 for the AD was not a good one. The Alumni - Syracuse debacle which was never fully explained, the firing of a very successful Women’s soccer coach with no explanation, Daz extension drama that was not properly handled, the cancellation of a men’s hoop game which is beyond bizarre and hard to even discuss the bowl game fiasco. Inexperience and lack of leadership is our lasting taste of 2018. Certainly willing to give the benefit of the doubt and hope for a better year in 2019 but not sure anyone has confidence in new AD to make any positive change to either major revenue sport. The clueless 50 millennials on twitter like all the emojis and fluff on tweets but ultimately this is Boston and most if not all people are not buying that real progress is being made in any capacity.

We will see what 2019 brings but whatever goodwill the athletic department had going early on has quickly faded away.

BCAlum2000 said...

It will never happen, so not much value debating it.

That said, for those who claim there is no evidence of wrong-doing, his Florida teams were chalk full of guys who repeatedly broke the law, let alone all the school disciplinary and ethical issues. The guy threw his own wife under the bus to try to weasel his way out of knowingly retaining a coach who had repeatedly abused his wife. The guy is an amazing coach. Zero debate about that. But he would never be a guy who could succeed at BC due to the recruiting and ethical restrictions he would have at The Heights.

Texas just beat 5th ranked Georgia. I looked at the majors on their roster. There were some majors in engineering:Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, Architectural. Several were pre med: Biochemistry, Biology, Physics. There were one each for Accounting, Economics, Philosophy. Nevertheless, there was a preponderance of such as Youth and Community Studies (11), Sports Management (6), Physical Culture and Sport (13), and Corporate Communication (14). It appears that they are the ideal sports factory-----As for Ohio State, the first thing you look at is their president Michael Drake. He has allowed Urban Meyer to become the "SEC School of the North" according to a recent article with low standards and recruiting similar to the "outlaw" schools of the South. He did it at Florida and he is doing it at Ohio State.-----There is a deep interaction between Ohio St and BC with Meyer and Addazio and now Jarmond thrown into the mix. I do not know if BC is bending the rules. However, you have to suspect that they are.

BCAlum2000 said...

Adazzio recruited Hernandez as they were both CT natives. Did he know he was a thug? Probably. Did he become a bigger thug at Florida surrounded by other questionable characters, definitely. That said, was Daz responsible for the dozens of other guys who got into trouble at Florida? Was he responsible for covering up for an assistant coaches years of domestic abuse and even throwing his wife under the bus to save his own ass? Daz sucks and needs to go. However, having recruited a bad apple by itself is not a reason not to hire or to fire someone. Doing it over and over and over and looking the other way when they get in trouble, is.

I dont understand why people are defending Meyer? The guy is who he is. A great coach who does whatever it takes to win.

BCAlum2000 said...

And that ultimately is the point. Like him or not, a coach like Meyer would never succeed at BC because he cant recruit those types of players. Simple as that.

BCAlum2000 said...

Proof of what? The Florida rap sheet? Seriously?

The 2008 roster alone lists 41 players whom have been arrested, either in college or afterward, and sometimes both. That number included 16 players on that season’s final two-deep roster, nine of whom were starters, as well as a kicker, punter and returner.

Those charged included safety Jamar Hornsby, who was accused of ringing up 70 fraudulent charges in 2008 on a credit card that belonged to a woman who died in a motorcycle crash. He had also been charged with property damage and criminal mischief a year earlier.

Ronnie Wilson, a lineman from Meyer’s initial 2005 recruiting class, punched and spat on a man, then opened his trunk, grabbed an AK-47 and opened fire outside a nightclub in April 2007, a police report charged. He was later arrested on charges of marijuana possession and of battery and assault.

Safety Dorian Munroe was charged with felony theft, accused of removing a parking boot affixed to his car. Safety Tony Joiner was charged with breaking into an impound lot to retrieve his girlfriend’s towed car. Defensive end Jermaine Cunningham was arrested after an altercation with an employee at the sandwich shop Jimmy John’s.

The list of the players on the 2008 roster includes Newton, who was charged with stealing a laptop from another Florida student. The authorities said he threw it from a window when the police arrived. The episode led to Newton’s transfer.

Other arrests involved a starting defensive end, Carlos Dunlap, accused of driving under the influence before the conference championship game; a starting cornerback, Janoris Jenkins, charged with resisting arrest; and a substitute running back, Chris Rainey, accused of sending a text message to a former girlfriend that read, in part, “time to die.” (Rainey was arrested in January in Gainesville on battery charges and released by the Pittsburgh Steelers.)

BCAlum2000 said...

Jenkins, the cornerback, eventually left Florida for North Alabama after Meyer’s successor, Will Muschamp, dismissed him from the team after marijuana arrests. Several months later, Jenkins spoke to The Orlando Sentinel about his dismissal.

“If Coach Meyer were still coaching, I’d still be playing for the Gators,” he was quoted as saying. “Coach Meyer knows what it takes to win.”

BCAlum2000 said...

Did I mention Aaron Hernandez regularly attended Bible study at Meyer's home?

BCAlum2000 said...

JBQ, have you seen the majors for a lot of BC athletes? Pure fluff.

True of some. Completely false for many others. BC football players are for the most part significantly more intelligent than the average DI football player.

Are you really trying to argue that under Meyer's leadership, the University of Florida did not recruit, retain, and start literally dozens of guys who fell afoul of the law? If this is your line of argument, then the question becomes why do you feel a need to ignore blatant facts in an attempt to try to make a random guy (Ubran Meyer) not look as bad as he does?

As for Jenkins, the fact is that 10+ years after his dismissal from the Florida football program, he is still finding himself in situations where a dead body is found in his home. Must all be coincidence though. He is just misunderstood.

BCAlum2000 said...

I do see a pattern: anything you can say to slam Meyer, you will say. You are like CNN when it comes to Trump.

Yes I do see a similarity here. Unfortunately for you, you are not astute enough to comprehend it. Hint: look at Trump's cabinet when he first took office as compared to now.

BCAlum2000 said...

Forget all the criminals Meyer recruited and empowered, the best thing he ever did was when he threw his own wife under the bus and claimed she never told him about the many texts and conversations Courtney Smith had with her about her abusive husband, Zach Smith who was a long-time Meyer assistant. This despite the fact that Meyer's wife said the two of them had marriage counseled the Smith's. What a guy!

It also reminds me of the time I told a guy that I voted for Jack Kennedy - 4 times! 🙂

And then I said - and you have to understand that I was only 14 years old at the time! 😊

I guess the funniest part of that is that the guy believed me. 😁

No further comment of a political nature.

Mod-pig is as dumbs as a TGS . . . . Urban Meyer is one of the biggest scumbag self righteous jerks in any walk of life. Lee Corso said it best Tuesday during one of the Urban Meyer discussions at the Rose Bowl when he said controversy has followed Urban everywhere he has coached. He left Florida because of digestion problems and Ohio State because of a cyst. Sounds more like the goodwill and rules violations were beginning to stack up against the wins. Neither Florida nor Ohio State had the institutional fortitude to fire him outright because it would make hiring the next rule skirting puke impossible.

What more proof do you want than how his players and coaches have acted off the field at Florida and Ohio State?

Mod-pig eats shit.

Mod-pig shiteater is on the high cycle of his obvious clinical depression. Wait a couple weeks he will be crying to ATL to remove everyone he disagrees with and who disagrees with him.

Mod-pig sheater is a sick puppy.

The best is when he disparages the google search which he counts on all day for his trash comments and then says the Florida football cases were all misdem's and were plead out. So you are acknowledging the proof against Meyer. He is worse than the players he enables them. Stupid shit Rutgers flunky . . . Mod pig the sheating anti-Catholic.
