Seguin joins Athletic Department and other links

Brad Bates hired BC grad Jamie Seguin as Deputy Athletics Director. In her role, Seguin will focus on internal operations.

As expected, the USC game will be on national television and in prime time on one of the ESPN/ABC networks.

Another day, another recruit. The latest addition to the 2015 recruiting class is RB Jordan Gowins. In the article, Gowins mentions what Addazio told him and the idea that we are going to run the ball a lot.

Wilkes University named former BC assistant Izzi Metz as their new head coach. Although it is D3, this is still probably a good move for Metz. He gets to rehab his career while also learning how to be a head coach. Best of luck.

Gaudreau wins Hobey Baker

The silver lining of the Frozen Four weekend came Friday when Johnny Gaudreau won the Hobey Baker Award. College Hockey's highest honor capped off a prolific season for the Junior Forward. It was a busy day for Gaudreau as he also signed with the Calgary Flames. He is the third BC player to win the Hobey Baker.

Gaudreau wasn't the only Eagle to receive accolades. Kevin Hayes and Matthew Matheson also earned All America honors.

As for the guys returning, York was quick to point out how young the team was and how solid they should be next year.

BC's moving on after crushing Denver 6-2 in the NCAA Tournament opener. Everything clicked from the start, but Gaudreau really made the difference. He scored three times including in the first minute.

BC plays the winner of Lowell and Minnesota State Sunday.

Freese on Groza list and other links

On a slow news day, Nate Freese making the Groza list makes for headlines. I am glad BC is supporting the effort, but I don't think Nate score enough to win the award.

I did not realize the Colts paid a premium to sign Emmett Cleary as an undrafted free agent. That doesn't mean he is a lock to make the team though.

For those who missed it, here is CBS's Morning Show's piece on former BC assistant Don Horton. Horton suffers from Parkinson's and his wife has built a business around shirts that he can button via magnets.

They're back

Our Hockey team should be pretty good next year considering that we are not losing any guys early to the NHL. Gaudreau is the big piece, but Michael Matheson, Bill Arnold, and Kevin Hayes would all have been big returnees just by themselves.

At times we as fans are spoiled with regards to Hockey's success, but I think the players share those expectations too. They didn't like losing this year either. That mentality of unfinished business will hopefully carry them to a Championship next year.

Baseball wins again! and other links

The Baseball team beat Harvard Wednesday 8-6 in our oft postponed home opener. Harvard is not particularly good either, but these are the types of wins our team needs. Our next game is against Clemson on Friday.

Johnny Gaudreau is a finalist for the Hobey Baker award.

Addazio keeps targeting local kids and offered Roxbury Latin's Kevin Cohee.

Rutgers probably won't hire Al Skinner but they should. Katz -- a long-time supporter of Al -- mentioned his name for the opening too.

Union ends Hockey's run

Like many I now take Frozen Four appearances as a given. After Union's 5-1 over the Hockey team, we won't be going anywhere. Union's dominance was the culmination of a few weeks where everything just seemed a bit off. First York dealt with another eye surgery. Then we lost in the Hockey East. Now were are out of the NCAAs after one round. 

The game really turned on penalties. BC kept getting whistled and Union kept converting their chances. We scored a late goal to break up their shutout, but after their first goal we really lost momentum.

Now BC is left to regroup and get ready for next season. The biggest questions isn't roster or defense, but York's health. For those who watched the game, you probably saw York's eye-patch. Let's hope the tie off leads to a full recovery.

The Hockey East media voted Gaudreau the Player of the Year. Whitney, Mullane and Matheson also earned all conference honors. Whitney also earned the Walter Brown award on Tuesday.

William & Mary hired Kevin Rogers as their Offensive Coordinator. Even though he is tight with Addazio, returning to BC wouldn't have been a good idea for either side.

The ACC Coaches also thought Hanlan was the Rookie of the Year.

BC target Nick Carovillano is getting attention from MAC schools.

The Rangers recalled Chris Kreider.

BC sailors are a critical part of the national team.

Joe Rahon's play earned him ACC honors as well as two different features. One from his hometown paper and one from ESPN Boston.

Report: TOB in talks w/UVA and other links

David Teel is reporting that TOB is considering joining Mike London's staff at UVA. While not a done deal, this is the most unpredictable thing I've ever read about the most predictable man in the business. TOB doesn't need the money. As a BC booster recently told me: "Tom still has his first communion money." TOB told many former staffers and players that NC State was his last job and that he was nearing retirement. However, he didn't leave NC State on his own terms. Maybe being fired struck a nerve. Or maybe he realized he's still too young to retire. I don't know, but I am surprised he would consider a staff job. I heard he had interest in Cincinnati. He has a long relationship with London and always loved UVA. Maybe he will go back into coaching. Just when you think you know a guy...
London did clean house and does need a DC, but I don't think Spaz will be in play. TOB is an empty nester and Spaz still has kids in school in Massachusetts. I doubt Spaz is willing to sacrifice any buyout money to go be an assistant somewhere else.

Kickoff time for Wake and other links

The ACC announced that BC's game at Wake Forest will be a 3:30 kickoff and carried on regional networks (probably the same ones that carried the Georgia Tech game). While I would prefer the ESPN channels, I am encouraged that even during a terrible season our games are getting broadcasts. It speaks to the lasting power of our BC's brand. Imagine what things would be like with aggressive Marketing?

Over the weekend Steve Donahue picked up a recruit for the 2013 class. Garland Owens is a wing player but does bring more of a slashing style of play to Donahue's offense. The idea of becoming a better shooter was one of BC's appeals.

 Hockey East voted Johnny Gaudreau its player of the week.

As everyone noted, the point spread for BC-Maryland has already had some funny shifts.
