The Athletic Department's Facebook page posted this picture Thursday. It is the front page of the Globe the morning after the Flutie Hail Mary. My family was living outside of Boston at the time and I vividly remember this edition of the paper. I thought it was so cool to have the two pictures split and the path of the ball in the air. 

I don't know when BC sports will be the top story on the Globe/Boston.com again. They just don't care. We would have to do something on the level of Flutie for them to lead with BC. I also don't know when the Globe would ever get that creative with anything related to BC sports. This probably sounds more like a grumpy fan whining about the media than I want it to. I guess I long for the days when a newspaper or new organization can leave a lasting memory like this. This page added to my experience of the game. Let's hope we have some memorable games in the near future and all our outlets (blogs, social media, message boards, etc) react and enhance the games like the Globe did that day.

Another York surgery and other news

Jerry York had a follow up eye surgery Monday. Yet once again, BC took a real casual, calm tone in their press release. The assistants will continue running the show and BC Celebration to honor York on January 18th has been postponed.

Purdue hired Jim Bollman. Normally I congratulate coaches when they land on their feet, but not in this case. It seems Bollman is poaching BC commitment Dan Monteroso. I know it happens all the time, but in general BC and its former employees have shied away from the practice.

BCI  put up a good chart showing who we might play in the second week of the 2013 season. My guess is Florida State.

Olivier Hanlan earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors.

No official word from BC, but Washington did "like" BC Mike's Facebook comment on Washington staying on as RB coach. (See screen grab.) There must be some validity to it all. I will comment more on Washington staying and his new position once BC releases their announcement.

BC Memes is back

If you didn't pay attention to BC Memes last year, you might want to follow them on Facebook this season. I have a feeling there will be plenty of good material.

Facebook Report: BC adds another commitment

Al Washington's Facebook page is the source of news again, as he states that BC has another commitment. Because of reporting rules, Coach Wash doesn't name the player, but it is generally assumed to be Defensive End Kevin Kavelec out of Cleveland St. Ignatius. While not highly rated Kavelec fills a major need and comes from a traditionally strong program with BC ties. I like the addition. We will see when official word comes from the Recruiting sites. 

Lively takes his fight to Facebook

When Jack Dunn rebutted Steve Lively's criticisms of Gene, he included the following:

It has caused a number of people, including several of Steve’s former football teammates, to express concern for him and his judgment.

It seems that there are a growing number of BC Football Alumni supporting Lively's efforts. He has a private, football Alumni group on Facebook that currently has 120 members and growing. Most of the members are players from the '80s and '90s.

Although Facebook groups are a dime a dozen, I think Lively is using the right approach. He's got select membership who understand BC football's history and potential. Ultimately this will come down to wins, losses and money. If Lively's group is organized and well funded, BC will have to listen. I also think that using former players as a sounding board will only help his message. At times his letters have missed their target or got bogged down in personal minutia with Gene. As a group they are much more likely to deliver effective communication.

I don't know if Lively will open the group to non-football players, but even without fans, he has momentum.

Ramsey, Facebook and Defensive Line

While most of us are celebrating the start of fall practice, it is a good time to remember that football is not always fun for those who play. At times it can be a huge pressure, burden and obligation. They don't play for love of the game. They play because they are big and strong and it is a means to an end. They didn't come to BC for the same reasons we did. They came because BC was often the best school to offer them a scholarship. I say all this because it appears that Kaleb Ramsey will not be playing football for BC this season. The Herald and ESPN both confirmed the long-speculated: Ramsey didn't show up at camp today.

Although Ramsey's status just recently hit the main stream news, it no surprise to those who follow BC on message boards, social networks and in blogs. For months now Ramsey has publicly expressed his desire to leave BC on Facebook. I got tipped off to it a few times, but never reported it due to the grey area that is Facebook. I am not Ramsey's friend on FB. He made his proclamations to his "friends." Not the media. Not the coaches. In a respect for his privacy I never said a word. But he, and others, should know that when you write something on Facebook, the whole world can see.

Finally, what does this mean for our defensive line. Looking at the fresh, new depth chart, we should be fine. We have plenty of big, raw bodies to clog the middle. Neither of the young guys are Brace or Raji, but Ramsey wasn't either. If Scafe comes back and one of the other guys steps up, I don't think Ramsey will be missed at all. He always showed good upside, but to be effective, you have to want to play for BC too.

The changing face of BC new media

When I started this blog there was very little out there in terms of BC media. The Globe and Herald had extension of their print arms. Rivals and to a lessor extent Scout had BC sites focused on recruiting. Even BCeagles.com was limited in its content.

Fortunately that has changed. BCeagles.com is constantly improving and adding more content and features. But that is the tip of the iceberg. The University, some key members of the staff and some alumni are also reaching out in new ways.

Jared Dudley is using Twitter to show off his humor and video skills. With his improved play and comfort with the camera, is there any doubt Jared will be on TV when his career is over?

If you follow BC on Facebook you would know that the critically acclaimed TV drama "Friday Night Lights" filmed on campus recently. FNL goes for realism, so I hope they mention BC by name. Here is a shot of Connie Britton on campus.
