The BC Pep Band welcomes youngest member

This video made the rounds Monday and I wanted to share it.

A 6-year-old has joined Boston College Bands, playing along with the Pep Band on his recorder at every Boston College Athletics hockey game. Andres Jay was recently invited to conduct the BC Fight Song. (Video by Max Prio '16, Exposure Productions)‪#‎WeAreBC‬

Great job by the Pep Band for getting this kid involved. Also, thank you to Andres' parents. The key to being a life-long fan, is getting them while they're young!

Mood music

You know what I listened to today? The BC Marching Band's latest album -- "Traditions." If you don't have it, you can buy or download it for less than $10. The season is only a few weeks away, so we all have to do our part to get ready!

P.S. The preamble to "For Boston" mentions that it is the oldest fight song in college football. I've heard that before and was always a little suspect of its validity. Yet tonight I looked up every notable college fight song I could think of and didn't find one older than ours. Why doesn't BC play this up more often? It's a neat little fact.

No band in San Fran and other links

No link on this first tidbit, but the band will not be making the trip to California. Supposedly they are just another victim of the terrible economy. Really though it is no surprise. We rarely bring the band to these sorts of things. It is a shame. We should at least bring the pep band. Maybe next year the band can start raising funds before the season and go regardless of the funding from the Athletic Department.

Incoming football recruit cJ Jones was named Gatorade Player of the Year for Delaware.

This is an interesting article from the WSJ regarding the growing ranks of Haitian immigrants playing football. I find it interesting since BC has been recruiting Haitian for many years now.

More good Herzy news and other links

In news that tops all others, Herzy finished his chemo and remains cancer free. Let's hope the surgery to strengthen his leg goes well. Mark will also receive an honorary Lott Trophy for his work raising funds for the fight against cancer. Pat Tillman is the only other athlete to win the honorary award.

It will be back to the internet for the UVA game. The ACC announced the game will be a 3:30 start on ESPN 360. So Central Michigan gets on TV, but conference games don't? There is little sense to it all.

Kuechly won his first, of what I assume will be many, ACC player of the week honors.

Incoming QB Chase Rettig had another good outing last week.

Dominique Davis will continue his college career at East Carolina. In his comments to ESPN he still has good things to say about BC.

There are some good Ryan Day quotes in this article on Chip Kelly. Now that Kelly is the toast of the town and BC is playing well, look for more "Day is a the hot assistant" blurbs in the coming weeks.

BC women's soccer earned a 2 seed in the ACC Tournament.

The economy is keeping the band homebound for now. Le's hope a late season rally gets them to Tampa again.

BC Band rocks Boston

What's more Political/Celtic Punk than using a college marching band as back up? Very cool move by the Dropkick Murphys to invite the horn section to join them at a concert Tuesday. I am also glad BC's taking back this song. The Sox and Celtics started playing recordings of the Murphys' tune during their championship runs, but our Band played it live shortly after the Departed debuted. Once again, the Band represents. They've come a long way from my day where they kept doing Lion King medleys at halftime.

Bring the band!

As you've noticed in the comments section of previous posts, the full band will not be in Nashville. Instead BC will travel with just 39 members. The full band needs to be there. Here's why:

-- The band kids put in hours of their time for our entertainment. Their payoff is a trip like this. They've earned it, just like the players.
-- The school can't ask all of us to turnout and then not bring along an important element of the college football experience like the band.
-- Revenue is shared among the ACC, so the cost or prestige of the bowl shouldn't impact the decision.
-- It's the Music City Bowl. If any group of people appreciate the destination, it will be the band members. I am sure they will use the little down time they have to check out some of the country music tourist stops.

I don't know where the 39 number came from. It may have something to do with the size of the charter or available hotel rooms. If a 40th member necessitates another plane, have some of the folks fly commercial. Or send the band down in a bus. These kids earned a trip too. Unless there is reason against sending a larger band, then BC should step up and get these BC guys and gals to Nashville.

The women's sailing team won the ICSA Women's National Championship. It is the first national title won by any BC sailing team.
