Hasselbeck interview helps poke holes in media (and some fans') narrative about BC job

As the game started slipping away from BC on Saturday, Steve Levy and Brian Griese started rolling out the media narrative about how hard it is to win at BC. Many of those points are all familiar to your average BC fan -- "facilities," "Boston being a pro sports town," and of course "admissions and academic challenges." At this point, I am so sick of hearing these things.

Every program in college football has some sort unique challenge. But anyone paying attention would also realize that each job has its own unique benefits. What also frustrates me is that recent BC coaches (and their staffers) have been some of the biggest sources of spreading these talking points. Call me cynical, but most of that is self-serving garbage that the coaches use to lower expectations and make their accomplishments look better. And watch, if and when BC makes a coaching change, you will read many media types and BC fans say "BC is a terrible job and no one will want it." More nonsense.

Fortunately there are some BC-connected folks who know better. Take a look at this interview Tim Hasselbeck did with WEEI. Tim knows that these Power 5 jobs don't grow on trees. There are hundreds of qualified guys who would kill to coach at BC. And even beyond the chance to run your own team, Hasselbeck also reminds everyone that the BC Head Coach makes $2.5 million a year! Even in a world where Alabama's assistant associate long-snapper advisor makes $500k, $2.5 million is a lot of money. Even if you worry about the Greater Boston cost of living, $2.5 million is a lot of money. Plenty of people want and will want Addazio's job. The sharks are already circling. So if we don't make a change or hire another loser, it won't be because of coaching salary or because Boston is a pro town. It will be because our leaders fail to execute...which is a different problem all together.

BC Radio Flagship station calls for Spaz's job

Meter and Pete Cronin have to be careful of what they say about BC and Spaz. They work for IMG Radio, but it is with BC's endorsement. However, WEEI (the station that carries the BC games in Boston) doesn't have to censor themselves as much. Yesterday after our broadcast wrapped up, Pete Sheppard did his usual college football postgame show and started it off with a rant on Spaz. He pulled no punches and called Spaz an embarrassment  I am not a Sheppard fan, but he's pretty on target with critique of Spaz and the position coaches.

The good news is that someone in Boston is paying attention.

Meter officially the new voice of BC

Here is the BC press release. Still no word on who Meter will partner with our how they will cover hoops games that conflict with football.

Jon Meterparel Assumes BC Basketball Play-by-Play Duties



CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Jon Meterparel, the radio voice of Boston College Football since the 2005 season, will add men’s basketball to his play-by-play duties beginning this year, officials of ISP Sports have announced. ISP Sports manages and produces the Boston College ISP Radio Network.



“We have been extremely pleased with Jon’s work as our football play-by-play man on the BC ISP Sports Network,” said Chris Ferris, Senior Vice President of the ISP Radio Network. “We know he will bring the same professionalism, energy and enthusiasm to our basketball broadcasts and we are excited to have him in this new role.”



Meterparel’s new agreement with ISP extends for the next three years, Ferris added.



“I am thrilled to be the new voice of BC Basketball,” Meterparel said. “It has been an honor to work alongside outstanding people within the athletics program and at ISP the past five years on the football network, and I truly look forward to adding basketball to my responsibilities as well.”



Boston College Director of Athletics Gene DeFilippo expressed his strong support for Meterparel’s new expanded role involving Eagle broadcasts.



“We are very pleased that Jon Meterparel will continue as the voice of Boston College Football and now will serve as our play-by-play announcer for men’s basketball as well,” DeFilippo said. “Jon has established himself as one of the most recognizable figures in the Boston sports media and we are fortunate to have him leading our broadcast team.”



ISP, through an agreement with Fenway Sports Group, has marketed and managed the Boston College ISP Sports Network since 2005. FSG and ISP recently announced a new agreement extending their relationship through June 2019. That agreement coincided with the announcement that WEEI will remain the flagship station for the Eagles’ football and basketball broadcasts through 2015.



Jason Wolfe, Vice President for AM Programming and Operations at WEEI and WRKO was pleased with the announcement of Meterparel’s new duties.



“I’m thrilled for Jon,” Wolfe said. “He’s worked exceptionally hard in his role with BC Football and has truly earned this opportunity. He’ll do a terrific job with basketball, too, and I look forward to working with him and the folks at ISP who produce such quality broadcasts.”

Missed opportunity

When Gene was trying to manage the Jags situation last winter, I think he missed a true opportunity at program continuity. He could have let Jags walk and put WEEI producer Steve "Chach" Ciaccio in Jags place. Think of "Dave" or "Moon Over Parador." Spaz could have been DC. Logan stays. All is well. Chach could have passed for Jags with a head set and a BC jacket (see below).



Although it is old news now, Chach and Meter previewed the NC State game. Hopefully they will do it for the other games too.
