Helter skelter and still winning

We got the full Dr. Chris and Mr. Crane experience tonight. But this is what we can expect the rest of the season. I think the coaching staff has accepted the good and the bad with him. They just hope his good plays are bigger than his bad. Tonight they were. In fairness to our QB, a few other guys on offense also had screw ups.

Thankfully our defense was awesome...again. Huge plays throughout and they really confused Taylor. The maligned special teams had a few big moments too.

We are now officially in the driver seat. Who would have predicted that after Georgia Tech?

I'll have grades and second viewing thoughts up late Sunday.

from ESPN.com...

Montel Harris ran 15 times for 61 yards and a touchdown for the Eagles, whose fans inexplicably stormed the field after the game.

Oh man.

As a student....let me explain what happened...We did not storm the field...we stayed in the stands to sing alma matter as usual...as the song started the players told us to join them on the field...this happened some 5 minutes after the game was over...I don't consider that "storming" the field...

I was at the game too. We didn't storm the field, I don't really know where espn got that from. I was also there 2 years ago when we beat VT even worse and we didn't storm then either, so I don't see why tonight would be different. I did hear idiot freshman talking about it though and quickly told them what was up.

Ryan - the students trickled on to the field during the playing of the alma mater. By the end, pretty much all of them were out there. I watched from the upper endzone above the band. It wasn't "storming" the field all at once, but it ended in the same result.

James - If the players really told the students to join them, I can see how that would be hard to refuse, but I find that hard to believe. Then again, I was a student during the TOB years, maybe Jags has worked on developing the team's relationship with the students.

Great win tonight, either way you cut it.

I was at the game, and disagree with James and Ryan entirely. While the students did not 'storm' the field, they did make their way piece by piece from the stands...almost pathetically.

It was a classic case of ignorance from a student body that had no idea the circumstances surrounding the game. To them, it was a win over a ranked team...and therefore, enough reason to jump on the field.

However, to anyone who has been following BC football, or better yet, the ACC this season, it was a win that could have happened on any evening.

From a distance, the BC crowd looked classless and short-sighted, not a surprise considering the fan base.

I'm proud to have been a season ticket holder every year since my graduation, though I was disappointed in our student body tonight. Stay humble, keep it together.

again...the students didn't wouldn't have done it if it wasn't for a lot of players encouraging and calling us to it...I agree that this win didn't deserve "storming" the field...I actually expected to win...I thought it was actually good. Sometimes the team seems very isolated from the rest of the student body....we forget they are fellow students I thought it helped a lot in bringing this particular team and the student body closer...Im a hardcore fan...There are few students out there who are similar to me in that respect...but I think the culture is slowly changing...This incoming freshman class seems very exited for BC sports and I noticed it not only tonight but at both hockey games so far this year...Things like this make students who might not be die hard fans like sports more and more and want to root for our teams...I agree that this win didn't deserve a stoRming of the filed, but it wasn't all bad... GO EAGLES! BEAT UNC!

How about you work on getting your people to get into the game before you are critical of the only ones who actually make BC anything outside of a morgue.

Joe Bags said...

Agree, claver. The exodus of non-student fans with 7:00 to go in the fourth quarter showed a lot more "ignorance" of the circumstances surrounding the game than drunk students rushing the field. I hope those people missed the end of the Sox game that had them in such a hurry.

Here is the deal the students did the right thing!!!! It is about time we rushed or whatever on to the field. It was a feel good moment for the team. DO NOT TALK BAD ABOUT IT!!!!!

Wow. We haven't stormed the court as a Vegas favorite since beating Syracuse in basketball in 2004. Well played fans.

ESPN2 left the game almost immediately after Crane knelt down on the last play, so no one saw this so-called storming. If the players did indeed invite the students onto the field during the alma mater (by which time VT would have long ago been in their locker room), that's really cool and I'm glad the kids went down.

As for Syracuse game, that was totally different and everyone knows that. That was a special team that playing a very very good (#9) 'Cuse squad and everyone in the media thought we would lose. And then it was a great game - with the refs seemingly against us. I was there and thought a storming was completely in order.

Why would some fans leave this game early? I'll be there in my season ticket seats for Clemson and Notre Dame - and I live in SC. If anyone leaves early near me there going to get an earful.

Joe Grav said...

To be fair, BC hasn't stormed for any sport since the Syracuse game, I think.

Although I agree, it was certainly not a 'storming.'

BCDoubleEagle said...

There was no "storming" of the field. The students just went on to the field a couple minutes after the game to celebrate with their team. I believe Clemson allows this at every home game.

EagleAlum07 said...

Who cares whether or not "storming the field" is justified by the opponent/quality of win. In my opinion, the most important thing is the energy surrounding the team and the program.

The fact that students were excited enough to stick around after the game to support the team is a big change from years past.

The crowd is a critical 12th man when engaged. The crowd energy raditated tonight, and helped the team get a big win...

Go Eagles

I was there and ran out onto the field. There was talk amongst the students of a possible field storming towards the end of the game, but it was going nowhere. Then Coach Jags came over to us with his fists raised, thanking us for our support. He was pumped up, shouting with enthusiasm, and eventually tossed his hat into the student section. If he could, he would have jumped into the stands.
It was right after this when we said "Screw it. Let's go". There was absolutely no resistence from the security guards. They just urged us to use the stairs instead of jumping after one girl face planted on the cement surrounding the FieldTurf.
It was a great sight and something I've been waiting for for a long time. It showed a lot more support than those in the crowd who left midway through the fourth quarter. The players absolutely loved it and Crane and Herzlich did not turn down any student with a camera phone.
The outlash at this is just your typical criticism from BC people that think cheering at a BC sporting event should be prohibited. Wake up! If BC wants to get to the point where they are an annual contender for the ACC Championship, which it looks like they are on their way to becoming, they need stuff like this. It makes up for the fact that the game, in primetime, on ESPN2, against a ranked conference foe, was not sold out.
I'd rather a field storming after beating a ranked team to jump into the ACC driver's seat than say. beating Army to finish the season 4-7. (1997 - Matt Hasselbeck's last game at Alumni).

Although most students ended up on the field, it definitely wasn't "storming the field," but rather excited students joining the team for the alma mater.

There was much talk about "rushing", but cooler heads prevailed. It wasn't until the team came over (minutes after the actual end of the game) and started really interacting with the student section (almost all of which stayed past the final whistle) that the first few kids hopped down- not to run to the logo at midfield- but to just congregate around the players in the south endzone.

Personally, if you are a traditionalist, and only accept fans on the field/court for upsets of top-5 ranked teams or whatever, you have a valid point of contention.

But if you have a little more of an open mind, and acknowledge that what happened last night was far from a strict "field rushing," but perhaps a more meaningful (though less graceful) fan/team celebration, you have to get behind this.

You hear all these BC detractors slam the school for an inability to travel, its size, the cantankerous down-in-front ticketholders, etc., but today's BC fan is so much more than this. The Superfan generation of alumni alone have stepped their support up a notch- so don't be so quick to slam the current crop of Eagles for doing the same thing, convention aside.

God forbid the fans show some enthusiam. Wah wah, stay humble, act like you've been there before, blah blah wah wah. I'll take over-enthusiam any day over the silence that too often comes with these home games.

#23 in AP and #26 in coaches. Doesn't mean anything but it's nice to get some recognition.

Let's just keep winning - we need these next 3 games.

AO said...

Lets not worry about the next three games. Lets worry about the next game. UNC is gonna be very tough coming off a loss and going home.

Really horrible about Toal, he was playing great. What are his prospects for the League?

tow2nd2none said...

I'll let the coaches worry about taking it a game at a time. On the macro level, we need the next 3 before we go to Florida State and Wake Forest.

As we approached the season, I stated that I hoped we didn't have any serious (season-ending) injuries this year.

When Alex Albright went down, I thought that was really lousy - since he was injured last season as well.

What to say about Toal? I really feel bad for the guy and I hope we give him all the support he needs. He is an Eagle all the way!!!

These are two hard luck guys who have laid it all on the line for their school and us. I'm proud of both of them.

I'll be at the UNC game and if we win, I'll storm the field in their honor! We need this game - Go Eagles.
