Clarifying my Shinskie comment

My earlier comment about Shinskie raised more questions than it answered. When I said "less enthused" about Shinskie it wasn't so much about him. It was more about him being our last-minute savior. Now take this all with a grain of salt given that it is secondhand, and Shinskie has still only been involved with unofficial team workouts. Early word is that he's a good athlete, but certainly football rusty and not necessarily leaps and bounds better than Boek or Tuggle. He has the advantage of age on the other QBs but isn't a Paul Peterson/Chris Weinke studious, mature, boy scout type. Take that for what you will. I have hopes that he blossoms and it clicks (before Labor Day would be nice!). But like I said, my prediction is it will be a big success or a washout. I don't expect some long, drawn out, mediocre four-year career.

I wasn't paying close attention at the time but my recollection is that Weinke spent a lot of time, seasons even, on the bench during his years at Florida State. If he's the model for upside expectations of Shinskie, that still doesn't sound all that good.

Chris Weinke was the first three-year starter at quarterback in the 22-year tenure of Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden. In 1999 Chris led the Seminoles to their first undefeated season and their second national title. Charlie Ward, the 1993 Heisman Trophy winner led Florida State to their first national title in 1993. Chris led the Seminoles to three straight national championship games and compiled a 32-3 record at Florida State as the starting quarterback. During Chris' Heisman winning season he led the nation in passing with 4,167 yards during the regular season for an average of 347.3 yards per game. Chris is the second QB in NCAA history to pass for more than 9,500 career yards and win a national championship. Chris is the ACC and FSU record holder for career passing yardage as well as career touchdown passes.

Nah, doesn't sound all that good.

Agreed ATL. It's hard to stake your hopes on this guy who hasn't played organized football in 6+ years. He will compete but I would be shocked if he starts this season.

Not the "studious, mature, boy scout type,?"

Hmmm...something more there, it sounds like.

You know what Matt Ryan did this offseason, after rescuing a franchise and being the NFL Offensive ROY? Studied game tape. Perhaps other QBs should take note.

yeah, shinskie is 6 years removed from playing organized football. but he HAS been a professional athlete for the last 6 years and as such he is in the kind of condition that you would expect from a professional athlete...even if it is minor-league baseball it is a far cry from the high school football shape that other incoming quarterbacks are in.

whether it is him or someone else, i think we need to trust the staff on this one. we always seem to make it work without the stud/highly recruited QB under center and I don't see any reason to think that this is the season that it changes. yeah we are short on experience, but talent-wise, there's no way to say we are any better or worse off than we have been before at this point.
