Game Watches: Kent State

I know ESPN U now has a wider audience than it did two or three years ago, but a sports bar might still be the only option for many of you. And since it is on ESPN U, you will not be able to watch the game on ESPN3.com. So far Game Watch notices have been light. I imagine there are still BC fans meeting in the normal hangouts in New York and San Francisco, but I haven't heard anything official. Certainly send me a note if there have been changes in venues.

Not sure what Vertigo is like but in NYC Pat O'Briens in the UES and Thunder Jackson's down on Bleecker are both owned by a BC alum and both almost always carry the games.

Like Dan said, most BC alums I have talked to will be watching the game at Pat O'Briens:

Pat O'Brien's
1701 2d Avenue (corner of 88th and 2d)
New York, New York
(212) 410-2013

Vertigo is the official NYC gamewatch. Pat O'Briens is extremely overrated unless u want to play beer pong. Very small and only 2 TV's.

Ry said...

for younger alums who tend to congregate on the UES, O'Brien's is just fine.

Dan said...

Well hopefully Vertigo will be better than Still.

Other than the fact that Still usually drew decent numbers, the big screen sucked, the audio sucked and the "BC Special" was their normal Saturday special.

i've been told that Vertigo "sucks". FWIW. TTYL.

Just called Thunder Jackson's-
Specials:
$3 draughts
$3 Sangria- red/white
$12 Sangria Pitchers

$15 rolling rock buckets
$20 all other bottled beer buckets

From my Frozen Four experiences there, its a good crowd. Vertigo is a little too fancy to be a gamewatch, Still had a decent crowd but tech problems. The game is on ESPN U so shouldnt be bad. Pat O'briens is a good place to get you drink on, but not great to watch a game.

You cant really go wrong, so let's hope BC Alums show up in full force for a healthy day of drinking and winning.

Dan said...

Also to add to Raj's endorsement. A few of us went to Thunder Jackson's last week after Still failed to figure out the internet. In addition to said drink specials, the owner (BC alum & owner of Pat O'Briens) gave us a round of shots after a TD and the bartender asked me to light her 151 soaked finger with a match so she could blow a fireball out of her mouth. Can't really argue with that.

Disclaimer: I don't foresee free shots if a huge crowd shows up.

Really cool to see Las Vegas and Kansas City join the fun. Our alumni network is becoming more and more broad as there are now chapters in 28 states and internationally in England, Ireland, France, China and South Korea.

Why is Porter's in DC no longer the place to watch games?

Unknown said...

so, say you're under 21, not a student at BC, don't have ESPNU and want to watch the game.

Crap.

The Midnight Lumberjack said...

There is not a single game-watch bar in NYC that is tolerable. It's the single most unfortunate thing about being a BC fan in this city. They're all awful, packed, shitty faux-irish pubs with a serious lack of TVs. They also to happen to be, 99% of the time when not hosting a game-watch, the frattiest, undesirable temples to douchebaggery in the city. Most of us wouldn't go there even if there was free beer.

Why does the bar have to be owned by a BC Alum? In our experience, the BC Alums who own the bar don't even watch the game, or show up. They barely show any affiliation. And the NYC Chapter wonders why it's so scattered. Until they realize that they need better venues, they'll get the usual crowd of first-year grads and the David Wooderson's hitting on the first-year grads.

(takes a deep breath)

With that being said; Go Eagles! I'll be watching from my apt with a group. We'll get just as drunk, cheer just as hard, eat much better.

I have to agree with Lumberjack on this one and I actually had a similar conversation with a BC friend last night. NYC, for whatever reason, is in general a pretty incoherent alumni group and there is a great difficulty for getting a true "BC Bar" and hosting our events there. Not to take anything away from the alumni group, I have certainly enjoyed myself and several alumni happy hours, one just a few weeks ago, but there seems to be no concerted effort to get BC alums in one place at any time.

And I agree that a lot of this difficulty comes from not having a "BC Bar." I never went to Still and have never been to Vertigo, but I have been to Thunder Jackson's and for a time worked at Pat O'Brien's and while I've enjoyed watching games at those places, it seems more to be just a place to watch the game more so than being the "BC place to watch the game."

I really think that BC alums in NYC should take the initiative to find a true "Boston College Bar" that we can all go to to watch any game we want, football, basketball, hockey, women's softball, men's club lacrosse, anything. If any other NYC alums on this blog want to help make this effort, feel free to message me and maybe we can get something going before the season is over.
