The latest information on the AD search

This is all second-hand information so take it for what it is worth...

  • Leo Sullivan is running the search. BC is not using an outside search firm.
  • Unlike some of our past searches, we will be reaching out to certain candidates and not just waiting for people to call us.
  • Once Sullivan has culled the list, he will present packets on finalists to Father Leahy and perhaps a few select faculty and Board members.
  • BC is highly unlikely to promote internal candidates.
  • BC is not restricting the search to just people of the Athletic Department world.
  • There wasn't one incident that forced BC to take action on Gene. It was a series of events and feedback.
  • BC made the move now so that a new AD could be in place before the football season ends.
  • There won't be a mandate for the new AD to fire Spaz. It will be his or her decision.

The above is what I've heard from multiple sources. The following is purely what I think...

If BC ends up hiring an AD from a smaller Catholic school, this process will have been a failure. This is a big time job and there is plenty of legitimate interest in the position. Despite the Rutgers bloggers' disbelief, Tim Pernetti is interested in the job as are many other ADs and high-level associate ADs at BCS programs. I would prefer a true outsider, sports executive to take over, but I will support whomever they hire. If I had to guess, I think we will end up hiring an Associate AD from a fellow ACC school.

Hopefully they will clean house. Get rid of all the Gdf votaries. Bring in Pete Kendall. A great player at BC and the NFL. He is probably set financially so you don't have to overpay. Plus he was invited by the players union to monitor the negotiations for the new contract. Only one with sustantial skill and intelligence would be asked to fill that role.

Not that I have any warm fuzzies towards ESPiN, but given their influence on just about everything in collegiate sports, don't you think there's an executive or twenty sitting in Bristol who'd like to drive up 84 and into Boston?

Have to imagine there's more than a few...

That Rutgers blog is comical. In what respect is Rutgers athletics in any more prestigious / more successful / more desirable than BC? Football had one above average season years ago, and basketball wasn't a laughingstock for one year, and now its a destination? Please.

BC ain't Stanford or Bama, but to say that Rutgers is a more prestigious job is a complete joke.

Who else but a BC grad would say "whomever" they hire? Ever to Excel.

Nothing better than commentors complaining about the grammar in a blog post provided for free. ATL, please conform your editorial standards to those of JBQ so that you don't embarrass the school.

What a joke.

ATL, can you give some background on who Leo Sullivan is and what it means that he's running things?

Leo Sullivan is the VP of HR at Boston College... that is about all I know of him and all I can find of him online. Not sure how that qualifies him to be the man searching for an Athletic Director since that is probably a once-in-a-career hire. I'd rather someone with a little more athletic/fundraising world specific background be guiding this search, not to knock whatever qualifications got him in this position...

I disagree.

The next AD needs to be a true Athletic Director and NOT a pure fundraiser/business person. The bottom line in Gene was that he had a moderate attitude problem and the coaches he hired were not successful.

The next AD needs to be what everyone thinks of a stereotypical AD which is a true politician - one who listens to everyone respectfully and then makes the right decision- and someone who can hire successful coaches.

The school has enough finance people and lawyers to ensure that we don't get screwed like Mike Trangese.

In a perfect world Jerry York and Tom Coughlin would be used as consultants in chosing the next AD.

I would not be surprised to see the next AD be a former NHL or NFL general manager or some one in those leagues with ties to Boston College.

Another peron that comes to mind is Dana Barros. Dana is a BC legend, local guy and Celtics executive in community relations/ PR.

This line is silly double talk (from your BC source)

"There won't be a mandate for the new AD to fire Spaz. It will be his or her decision"

c'mon now, barring a 8-4 season AND Spaz's strongly demonstrated interst in returining, he's gone to retirement. Why not?

this is a great opportunity for BC's athletic department to make a move and change the culture- fully fund the sports that it competes in by endowing scholarships, endow head coaching and then asst coaching positions, and most importantly commit to being competitive in all sports that it fields ACC teams in!
