Getting to know Jeff Smith

The biggest surprise of the summer has been new QB Jeff Smith. Recruited as the second QB in last year's class, many predicted it would be Smith, not Elijah Robinson who moved to another position. While all indications point to Wade as the starter, it is starting to look like Smith might begin the season as the backup.

If you look at Smith's high school highlights (below), you can see he has real speed. He's breaking away from the competition in a decent league in Florida. Obviously this is a highlight video, but the passes we do see are sharp and accurate. Even if he is not the passer that Wade is, Smith's ability to run reminds me of Tyler Murphy.

The rest of the summer will still focus on getting Wade ready. And of course Flutie has a shot as the backup too. But considering how long he's been on campus, Smith's early showing is very encouraging.

I watched the highlights and Smith has a great arm. He is really fast. I take exception with the belief that Wade has a passing arm. His passing mechanics as seen in a recent photo are terrible. From what I have seen, Smith should start. I love Flutie. It must be pointed out politically that Troy is an Arab just like his uncle Doug. Lebanon is exploding once again and he has dead relatives. Sometimes, there are more important things than football. Mathias Kiwanuka was another player with an eye opening political background. His grandfather was assassinated by Idi Amin. BC has always stood for lots more than football. Herzies story was a "tear jerker" to be sure. Sadly, time has passed Flutie by. With this offense which in my opinion is offensive, he will be lucky not to be relegated to ball boi. "The statue" will soon just be a door stop in one of the stadium locker rooms that the visitors will "pee on" just before they run on the field.

The issue at this point with Smith is he's really small. He really needs a year or two in the weight room to take the pounding running the read option in the ACC.
I'd like to see Flutie as he back up (taking the mop up snaps) even if Smith is slightly better at this point. If Wade got hurt and was out for an extended period then you could revisit it then.

Wow, that's got to be one of JBQ's strangest rants. Tell me, how can you tell that Wade's mechanics are terrible from one photo?

The JBQ spoof bs is getting old. JBQ you need some actual wit if you want to be of any interest. Making stupid Shock-seeking comments like "Troy is an Arab just like his uncle Doug" is just, well, being a complete dick. Stop. Please.

Bring back College Observer!

Good video link ATL. Smith was indeed murphy-esque with his field sense. Great running.

But Smith's throws suggest he lacks arm-strength...a few crisp balls, but mostly loopy I-am-going-get-there throws.

Yes. Bring back the exact same schtick over and over and...

Appreciate ATL's efforts. Hugely. But are these comments getting weirder?

I will say nothing more until Wade can be evaluated fairly. All that you need to do is to look at what has happened at Notre Dame to see what Addazio is attempting to do. He worked with Urban Meyer at Florida. BC has always been different. BC has had standards. You cannot win with standards. Bates is right there with him. Leahy is the target. This is a Catholic university, at least so far. I visited the campus in March. In 2012, I visited as well. While standing there at "Affton's desk", I heard a young coach talking on the phone saying, "you can't do that, you could go to jail". This was the last days of Spaziani and the start day for Spring practice. There is no doubt that Addazio is bending the rules. He will be caught and BC will have their scandal. Flutie is nothing more than a recruiting scapegoat for an inept offense. The same holds true for Suntrup who is from my home town and I saw him play. Addazio runs a junior high offense that won't work unless you have Cardale Jones. From the same high school, Hunter Fortee' was a freshman 210 pound linebacker who just had his scholarship taken away and sent home after the season. First, what was a 210 pound linebacker doing being recruited. This same high school, St. Louis Chaminade, has the number one college basketball recruit in the nation in Jason Tatum who is heading to Duke. Bradley Beal is from there as is David Lee. Because of the treatment of both Suntrup and Forte', I have written the A.D. to throw your recruiters off campus. Flutie is a Maronite Catholic and his uncle Doug put BC on the map. His treatment as well as the treatment of his cousin Billy was and is shameful. Addazio is just like Kelly and believes that he is Professor Harold Hill and can control the pagans that he is bringing in by the truck load. Kelly lost 4 defensive starters last year in one incident. Tom Coughlin won with dignity. He was able to blend athletes. Addazio is creating an us v them situation. Why isn't Gunnell still around after being a graduate assistant? Jags was the greatest thing since sliced bread. His 4 kids were the greatest. I have seen nothing yet about Addazio and his married life other than Louie. He already tried to get the Michigan job through Bates. Bates can't fire himself for looking for another job at Michigan. I knew that something was amiss when Mehdi got hurt on the dirty hit by O'Leary. BC should have been all over that. Mehdi is not of the privileged class. He has no recruiting class value. "Badges, we don't need no stinking badges". Flutie no longer has any recruiting relevance and the shameful treatment of his nephew should send a message. BC no longer wants Christian warriors. They want barbarian gladiators. Florida State wins. BC is ranked number 73 by CBS. Wade has big problems. A picture can tell you that he doesn't use the laces to throw. Flutie said that the laces are on the ball for a reason. Kelly has jumped into the mud to make money for ND. Addazio is right behind him. Good bye. It's been nice.

I like the look of leather helmets, too.

JBQ Oct 2014: "Murphy is more a concern than Addazio. A recent picture on BC Interruption showed that he doesn't even put his fingers on the laces when he passes. The enthusiasm of Addazio is great. He has to consider using Wade"

JBQ today: "Wade has big problems. A picture can tell you that he doesn't use the laces to throw. Flutie said that the laces are on the ball for a reason. Kelly has jumped into the mud to make money for ND. Addazio is right behind him. Good bye. It's been nice."

I hope you really mean Goodbye JBQ. really goodbye

I'm actually frightened by those comments...

In other news: https://www.google.com/search?q=darius+wade+boston+college&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAmoVChMItsKM8v3ExwIVC3Y-Ch2Xsgaj&biw=1509&bih=939

Every picture there shows his fingers on the laces. Maybe I'm confused though.

Things were worse in Lebanon when Doug played than they are now.

Just give the starting job to the best player. If that's Jeff Smith or Benny Boom Botts - so be it. None of our QB recruits were so good as to be anointed.

Remember Beruit the drinking game? There is a joke there somewhere.

Doug only got a chance because of injuries/poor play from folks above him on the depth chart. He wasn't the starter from day one or expected to be.

The difference between then and now is that these coaches micromanage the shit out of their players. Seriously Doug ran the show a la Jim Kelly/Peyton Manning(not a filthy demonstrative though). There was no ass clown offensive coordinator screaming at him about zone blocking schemes, pass to run ratios or stupid placards with 4 pictures on it.

I agree if Jeff Smith is the best QB in game situations then he should start. I don't care if he weighs 100 lbs, is blue or eats shit sandwiches. Frankly I would be proud to have a Catholic School kid playing QB.

Outlow needs to be moved to WR. Makes no sense he is still an RB.

Hoib said...

Knuck

Outlow will touch the ball more at RB then he would at WR

Knucklehead said...

They have enough running backs. They need to move one to WR in order to put the best team on the field. He has the best hands . . . all state BB player.
