What we learned from the final scrimmage

BC held its final scrimmage of the preseason and it appears that the offense looked a little better. Here's BC's recap, the Herald's recap and Rivals' recap. The best news was that Wade looked a little sharper and Flutie had his best scrimmage yet. Adddazio seemed pleased in his post scrimmage quotes. Other news:

-- Alex Howell will be BC's kicker and punter. Howell has been the best of the bunch and only missed one field goal. As nice as it would be to have a sure-shot long-range kicker, all we really need from Howell is consistency. If Addazio knows his range, then they can play call around him.

-- Harris Williams still didn't play, but did practice with the first team. Without him the starting OLine was Bowen, Baker, Taylor, Lindstrom, and Cashman. The whole thing could be shuffled when Williams is ready.

-- Robinson's transition to WR is going well. He had a few big plays in the scrimmage. That's a good sign since many of our experienced WRs are dealing with nagging injuries.

While I don't take anything lightly, I do think BC's schedule lends itself to growing pains. If the offense just keeps getting better, the defense should be able to carry them the first two weeks.

it still pains me that we didn't close Christian Wilkins (DT, CT) last year. apparently he is going to start at Clemson. our D-Line would have really been dangerous.

that said, it sounds like a very deep group and one that will be pressuring the QB.

i hope we use the Maine and Howard games to get Flutie and Smith snaps in addition to Wade. it doesn't sound as if anybody has really seized the job yet, so in the event the offense is stalling down the road in ACC play Addazio shouldn't hesitate to get in one of the backups.

Glad Daz didn’t lock in on Knoll, but instead decided to go w/ the guy who performed the best. I hope we can recruit a good one for next year. W/ the type of ball we play, a consistent kicker is a must. All points are at a premium when you play possession football.

I'm baffled by comments suggesting that Addazio's evaluation of his QB prospects is wrong or in flux. Why would you want to use the first two games to learn more about the backups, rather than give your anointed but untested starter as many real game reps as possible?

Mod 10A - if Smith is better than Wade (or even in the conversation to be the starter) then i think he should get reps too. i'm all for getting Wade the reps but he hasn't proven anything and if someone else is better i want that person to get a shot to prove it.

Hoib, thought we got a K on campus as a freshman right now. Agreed about the importance. Don't envision this team scoring in bunches. And half your kicks on turf? Come on.

Howell.. well i hope he has improved.

he was not accurate last year and did not have a stong leg for FGs.

He was 5-11 (45%) including a miserable 3-8 (37.5%) from 40-49 yards. - BC stats pdf

Solid 8-9 on PATs

Basically, unless Howell improved and is reliable over 40 yards, BC will ONLY be kicking FG inside the 25.

how is Howell's distance and height on Kick offs?

Howell avg.'s ~59 yards on his kick offs. - 6 yards less than Freese, and the 2nd worst in ACC in 2014.

but i am sure he has improved. He adds 3-4 yards on his kick and he is in the top of the ACC

I'm w/ El MIZ till they get in games we have no idea what any of these kids can do. Also w/ a QB who runs allot the chance for injury is hi. We've been lucky so far, but I'd like the back up to have some game experience. I liked TOBs idea of giving the back up a series every game for that reason, but in Daz's system where every possession is precious I don't see him doing that.

CT

They all stunk last year, but my point was about Daz being open minded, more as it applies to the QB. My all time favorite coach is Bill Parcells, he used to say "I go by what I see". If someone didn't perform they were out, regardless of how highly touted they were.

Did you see that photo of Flutie in BC's recap? That kid doesn't use the aces to throw the football! (sorry couldn't resist)l

Was Smith "in the conversation to be the starter"? I missed that conversation. I've only seen him mentioned in the conversation to be a backup.

As for giving the backup some PT against Howard and/or Maine, a few reps there would be about as useful as a couple of hours playing Madden as preparation for the likes of Florida State.
