Moore, Baker named Captains

On Friday, BC announced that the team elected Kam Moore and Jon Baker as Captains for the upcoming season. I always like when the team elects the Captain, as it shows who they view as leaders and who they expect to have a big season. Both Baker and Moore are critical to the upcoming year, so I hope this is a good sign. Congratulations to both on the honor and I hope they both serve BC well.

On August 24, the "Boston Globe" ran a story on Boston College High. There was a coup d'état and the leadership was changed. This is only a "practice run" for the big show on the big hill.----The Jesuit provincial, Rev. John J. Cecero, is the boss for Father Leahy. He is now the leader for a new merged province of Boston and New York. The Board of Trustees was gutted and the Rev. John McElroy was sent in to head the board. He then brought with him a new president, Kelly Verrochi. She is married and was on the staff at the big house as an associate provincial.----The turmoil was over the admitting of young women. BC High is 7-12 according to the Globe. Cardinal O'Malley also got involved and claimed that the admitting of young women would destroy the system in place for all girls schools.----You can also lay all of your leftover money bet on McGregor that there is a woman being groomed to take the place of Leahy. It could even be Donna Shalala who worked with the red headed Jesuit to bring BC into the ACC. This could dramatically change the perspective of the football and basketball programs maybe even to the extent of phasing them out.

Donna Shalala? Oh God no, not that left-wing communist.

How about Condolezza Rice from Stanford? Now there is a woman I respect.

Bc high fired 2/3 of the board and retained it's all male charter.

That post makes no sense on any level. Not seeing how it has anything to do with sports.

Sounds like a TGS post.

JBQ, I do beg to differ here. Fr. Leahy may well be nearing retirement age - there we agree. If BC was to make a big shakeup at the top, it would probably be having a layman as President. To move directly from all Jesuits in the past to a woman in charge is probably too big a change to make in one fell swoop.

Phasing out football and basketball? Forget it. There's just too much money involved. We worry about those programs now because we've done poorly in the conference for a number of years. My hope is that under Jarmond, we'll be moving in the right direction. It won't be overnight. And I doubt it will be with Addazio and Christian at the helm.

The name Leahy once meant greatness " FOR BOSTON"

AND NOW "SADNESS FOR BOSTON"

@knucklehead: Two steps forward and one step backward. It has everything to do with sports at BC. This is a practice run for a purge at the university. The provincial runs all things Jesuit in his jurisdiction. There will be a ripple effect all through the university community which includes sports which are seen as sexist and overly macho. Left wing loonies have taken over the Jesuit order up to and including the "head Jebbie" as "mod34" calls him.---The fact that both programs are in a sorry state will only make it easier to accomplish. With the new Jesuit General, Arturo Sosa, who is a known Communist from Argentina (no surprise), you have to have your head in the sand not to understand that major changes are coming to all 28 Jesuit colleges and universities. The hatred of capitalism is palpable and what is more capitalist than football and basketball.----Just why do you think that Jarmond was hired in the first place? He was not the best available candidate. He was the best candidate to instigate major socialist reform within the athletic department.---News out of the Jesuit Saint Louis University were that they had no single team this past season in an NCAA playoff. The athletic director stipulated that this was a good thing. He pointed out that athletics was fulfilling the socialist model of the university. Winning was not a prime consideration.---With this in mind, both Addazio and Christian are known to be fulfilling the socialist ideal of the Jesuit tradition. A business model is capitalist. A socialist model is based on justice. Therefore, the Dazzler is doing a great service to the university and is taking his 2.6M per as a favor out of reluctance and deference to the socialist ideal.---You can bet your McGregor money on major changes in athletics at Boston College. Saint Louis University dropped hockey and stifled attempts to bring back football by canning its club football team. Why should BC be any different than a large host of Jesuit schools which have dropped football?

Since were getting into rampant speculation while waiting for a starting QB to be announced. Now that the Jesuit province has merged with at NY, Fordham is going to request that BC's ACC membership be transferred to the Rams which also would give the ACC a school in NYC. A female president in particular would probably do everything possible to help make that happen. It sounds like BC could be just days away from becoming a Mid major, basketball only commuter school.

@jbq Jesuits have turned higher education into a billion dollar business and educated alums who haved created billions more in economic value. They might live in community and not receive individual salaries, but they certainly understand capitalism. As far as SLU goes, at this point if you're not in a power 5 conference or the Big East in hoops, I think it's wise to evaluate the ROI of the collegiate athletics arm race.

Hopefully everyone is aware that the Jesuit president of Xavier has both Xavier basketball
and baseball do very well in NCAA tournaments.
Gonzaga a Jesuit school with a lay president has a dominating national basketball power
and competes very well in the WCC in all other sports.
The Jesuit President can in some cases be deadly to athletic dominance as in the case of
the University of San Francisco's 40 year dominance of WCC basketball and except for UCLA
being the number 2 basketball power on the West Coast.

They are selling beer in the stadium now . . . the definition of capitalism.

The "Head Jebbie" has certainly presided over the near-collapse of Boston College as a major player in most sport programs. He needs to go and be replaced with a man or woman who embraces the capitalist philosophy of winning, not socialism and it's "share-the-wealth defeatism.

JBQ said...

@Georgia Eagle: Agreed but the flow of history is against it. Actually, the "head Jebbie" is Francis and his socialism is filtering down through Arturo Sosa (not Sammie and Father General) to Provincial Cecero and then to Father Leahy who knows his place in the food chain. Let's see how the season goes starting with Friday. I continue to think that there will be major changes and that Father Leahy's days are numbered.

Slugging Jim Beam and Ginger Ale at Buckley's in Southampton. This place is going fucking nuts for McGregor, the mick motherfucker.

Title 9 was the beginning of the end for the middle and low rent bb and ftbll schools. That has hurt BC.

It isn't only sports with Leahy. I have said this before. The school as levelled out in terms of academics. The undergrad rankings have stagnated, the law school rankings have dropped and the MBA ranking has levelled out.

I start the PhD program in Finance on Monday. Cannot fucking wait to get back on that campus. Shangri fucking la.

When Donna Shalala was Chancellor at U. Wisconsin-Madison, she interviewed and hired Barry Alvarez as HC for football. He did a pretty good job. When she ran U Miami, it was said that she never missed a football game.

The BC football program could do a lot worse; but I think age (76) and health (she had a stroke 2 years ago) would keep her from serving.
