2014 Preview Questions: How difficult is the schedule?

Outside of Gallik, most of our seniors seem like longshots for the NFL.
Soaring to Glory's continued their player preview series with Kam Moore. He seems like the type that woud redshirt.

Daz gets his second QB
Smith camped at BC, so the staff is familiar with his abilities. He's also has the size and speed to play another position if he cannot get on the field as a QB. Even if the staff expects Smith to switch positions, I still don't think they will take another QB. They have so many needs and a third QB is not one of them. With just a handful of scholarships left, it will be interesting to see what Addazio does next. We need some big bodies for the OL/DL area and could use another skill player.

Addazio's message
I didn't comment when it debuted two weeks ago, but I wanted to revisit Addazio's Youtube clips. There a good underlying message in them, with this one focusing on accountability. Is it a little cliche? Sure, but the theme of the message is true and Addazio delivers it in a believable manner. It is refreshing to have a coach who can shape and deliver this sort of message.
My only concern about the whole things is the lack of views. BC's official Youtube page posted the clip two weeks ago. In that time only 1,100 have viewed the clip. This is the type of clip that should go to every BC fan and every recruit and be in the tens of thousands of views after two weeks. Addazio's willingness to be the face of the program is valuable. Let's not waste such a great asset.

2014 Preview Questions: How good is the Offensive Line?
Given BC's history with OLine play, it is surprising that it took until last year for an offensive coach to say "forget skill players, maybe we should just put out eight offensive lineman." The jumbo packages combined with the spread proved to be a good wrinkle. It played to our strengths and depth. I am sure this year we will see new wrinkles, but I don't think teams will be as surprised or that we have the same depth to pull it off. The big question is how good can this Oline be? Their success as a unit will impact BC's season more than any other.
During the decline under Spaz, the most obvious weakness was offensive line play. Mistakes, confusion and sloppy technique were evident. One of the reasons for last season's turn around was simply better position coaching. Which shouldn't have been a surprise since Addazio was a former OLine coach. You assumed that he would put an emphasis on the unit and find a good position coach (which he did in Justin Frye). In Year 2 -- with another year of good coaching -- things should be better. But it is not always that simple.
The middle of the line returns. Vardaro, Gallik and Williams should all probably be in the same position as last year. But those three were also the most inconsistent of our starters last season. Vardaro and Gallik would play really well some games and struggle in others. With Gallik receiving a series of preseason accolades, I assume the coaches are expecting a big season season from him.
But who replaces the Tackles? It is assumed that it will be another Florida transfer Ian Silberman and Seth Betancourt. But the coaches could easily move Vardaro and Williams wide and use Silberman and Betancourt on the interior. It really depends on what Frye thinks is most important, position familiarity or putting you best talent at Tackle.
I also don't know if and how often we will go big. Opponents have had a whole offseason to prepare. Without the surprise will the big packages be as effective? Also, do we have the depth? Are the guys on the bench able to come in and play? Are we better off with multiple Tight Ends? Unlike our questions at WR, I have more confidence that the Oline will come together. The talent and coaching is too good for it not to come together. And if it doesn't come together...we're screwed.

Jersey commit, NHL Draft and other links
Although he went high to Columbus, future Eagle Sonny Milano is committed to playing for Jerry York next year. Vancouver drafted Demko, which seems appropriate given their familiarity with BC goaltenders. The Devils' draft pick Joey Dudek is also committed to playing at BC.
This MAC blog is already previewing the BC-UMass game.
Remeber David Sills? He's the former 7th grader who verballed to USC. Now that he's older and Lane Kiffin is not around, Sills is not headed to USC. BC offered a scholarship, but most expect him to go to West Virginia.

Father Neenan passes, more recruits and other links
The recruiting train continued Thursday. Mass CB/Athlete Taj-Amir Torres committed after camping. He's raw and without a natural position, but he's fast. Like really, really fast. Let's hope the staff has a plan for his ability. Joining him in the 2015 class is California DT Ray Smith. Smith has some decent west coast offers.
WR coach Todd Fitch's Florida roots were a big factor in Mehdi El Attrach decision.
Californian Thatcher Demko credits Gretzky for the hockey boom that launched his career.
Tennis' Matthew Wagner made the 2014 All-ACC Academic Men's Tennis Team.

Three more recruits commit!
I don't know why there has been such a rush of verbals. My guess is some of these guys had deadlines as it looks like Addazio is ready to fill out most of the class. I expected things to slow down, but with the way things are going Addazio might be to 25 recruits by the end of the week!
Does David Blatt open or close doors for Tyrese Rice?
Since leaving BC, Rice has bounced around Europe. He's shown flashes of his potential but never took over a team for an extended time until this year. But now that he's proven himself at the second highest level, it might make sense to come back to the U.S. and give the NBA one more try. Still a great shooter, Rice could be an instant offense guy on the right team. Blatt knows what he can do. It would seem natural to bring along his best player to add depth to the Cavs. But Rice and Blatt had issues in the beginning of the season. There's also the issue of Rice's money. At this point he's established in Europe. He will play the whole season. I have no idea if any NBA team would give him a guaranteed contract (beyond the usual 10-day for guys who have bounced around).
I always root for BC guys and still think Rice has been overlooked. Sure he is a defensive liability, but he can score. Bringing Blatt over is proof that the NBA is watching. If his old coach doesn't want to bring him, maybe another NBA team will.

El Attrach on board and other links
Soaring to Glory posted a map of the hometowns of Addazio's recruits. The map reinforces our slight shift from the Midwest to more emphasis on the ACC states.
This is the time of year where everyone produces their respective list ranking any and everything in college football. This one has Addazio as the 10th best coach in the conference. It is still so early in his tenure here at BC, that I don't know how anyone can really rank accurately. Athlon didn't think much of our individual defensive players, but ESPN thinks Daniels might surprise.
BC's color commentator Pete Cronan had some of his best seasons with the Redskins, so it is only natural that he has an opinion on the team name.

Virginia Tech is another team we get late in the season. This preview emphasizes what we already know: their D will be good and their offense will be a question mark all year.

Two more recruits commit
The bigger recruiting news came Saturday, when local TE Chris Garrison committed too. Getting locals stars is crucial and Garrison had offers from most of the FCS and FBS programs in the northeast.
Addazio now has 15 verbals but still has plenty of space. Based on current recruiting pace, I expect us to pick up a few more guys this summer and then get the last five or six commitments during the season.

BC coaches in their 2nd Year
I think the general consensus among BC fans is that we'll be a borderline bowl team again. If we take a step back, it will only be because we overachieved last year and are very young. But historically Year 2 hasn't been a good barometer for any BC coach. Take a look at coaches in their second year since Holovak.
Coach
|
Year 1
|
Year 2
|
---|---|---|
Holovak | 3-6 | 4-4-1 |
Hefferle | 3-6-1 | 4-6 |
Miller | 8-2 | 6-3 |
Yukica | 6-3 | 5-4 |
Chlebek | 0-11 | 5-6 |
Bicknell | 5-6 | 8-3-1 |
Coughlin | 4-7 | 8-3-1 |
Henning | 7-4-1 | 4-8 |
O'Brien | 4-7 | 4-7 |
Jagodzinski | 11-3 | 9-5 |
Spaziani | 8-5 | 7-6 |
Over the 11 coaches there is not great pattern. You want to read into Coughlin's four win improvement, but how can you when Chlebek improved by five wins? Henning fell apart, but Spaz held things together. Jags' record declined but I know many of us felt his second year was a more impressive coaching job.
I think and want Addazio to do well this season. But I don't think we can read too much into our final record. The key for me will be how we compete and how the players he recruited start to develop.

Bates is right and wrong
That is why the band is important. That is why tailgating is critical. That is why having traditions like the Eagle or getting your picture with Baldwin makes a difference. Running on the field after the game is something you cannot do if you stay home. Social media is great but nothing beats the communal experience of watching a tense game with thousands of like-minded people. If you want people to pay extra and make the effort, remind them of what is unique about seeing a game live. Replays and parking and even food need to be good. The stuff you cannot duplicate at home needs to be great. Then people will come. Then they will feel they are part of something.
Another recruit and other links
Tampa Bay cut Emmett Cleary. He still has plenty of time to catch on with another team.
Florida Athlete Michael Walker committed to Addazio Tuesday. He is under the radar and smallish, but does hold an offer from Arizona.

Thatcher Demko posted another update to his blog as he preps for the NHL Draft.

Feeling better about Ty-Meer Brown's neck
There is risk to any player that steps on the field. Brown faces risk, but his risk is not that much greater than his fellow BC teammates. Maybe it is better this way. When he takes the field, Brown won't think about injury. He also brings a dedication. Many players would opt out when given the change. Brown wants to be here and still dreams of the NFL. I am glad he decided to finish his career with us.

"If the Boston College basketball team will share revenues from television and, lo and behold, each member of the Boston College basketball team is entitled to $200,000, I just think that's a negative," Pilson said. "I think that's a problem for the public."
I don't know if Pilson pulled the BC example out of thin air or intentionally mentioned a recent under performing team, but the whole example is weird. I will keep rooting for BC athletes if they get paid. I think most BC fans would. Look at how pro sports salaries have sky rocketed. Did the sports become less popular? How about the Olympics which used to pride itself on amateurism? I think paying athletes is one of those survey questions where people answer one way and then when faced with the actuality, ultimately don't care.
Hayden Rettig won't be coming to BC. Chase's brother decided to transfer to Rutgers. I understand, but I sort of don't. Rutgers runs a pro-style offense. However, the coach is on the Hot Seat. Why not play JuCo this year and see what spots open up?
Matt Ryan is still using things he learned from his BC coaches. The Falcons announced they will participate in Hard Knocks this year, which means plenty of Matt Ryan time on TV.

2014 Preview Questions: Who will be our deep threat
For all of last season's innovative mix of spread and jumbo packages, the fundamentals of BC's offense were decades old. We ran the ball over and over and then used play action to connect on deep passes. I have enough confidence in the offensive line and the mix of running backs, that I think they can duplicate Andre Williams' production as a group. I have not seen Murphy play much, but his arm seems adequate enough to connect on deep passes. The big question is who will catch the deep balls?
Speed is really the key on long passes. If you cannot get separation downfield, a fast DB can catch up to the Reciever while the ball is still in the air. Amidon's deceptive speed was a perfect compliment to our passing game last year, as he blew by opponents with regularity.
The returning pass catchers lack many essential skills but especially speed. A lot is expected of converted QB Josh Bordner, but he's not going to run by ACC DBs. Harrison Jackson's health is in question. No one knows if Bobby Swigert will be 100%. Crimmins is a possession guy. Barksdale is untested. Dudeck brings a few dimensions to the O but he's not a scorcher. It is no wonder that the coaching staff is still scouring college rosters for a 5th year guy. Shakim Phillips is expected to return, but we can't count on that until he completes his UConn degree.
Of the incoming freshmen, there is potential. Nat Dixon, Gabriel McClary, Troy Flutie, and Thaddius Smith all have the chance to come in and contribute as true freshman. All they have to do is show they can run fast and still catch the ball.
After last year, I do trust Addazio and Day to do the best with what talent they have. If we don't have anyone who can catch it deep, we probably won't throw it deep very often. But before they abandon something that worked so well last year, I hope they try it once or twice with a new guy.

UMass announced a 3 pm kickoff for our season opener at Gillette. ESPN3 will carry the game. The Red Sox have night game, so maybe, just maybe, NESN will pick up the ESPN3 feed and distribute it locally. But then again that would make too much sense.
The ACC increased its team payout by $1.2 million. What this means is that BC's major revenues are inline with the sports biggest players. Where we start to fall behind is in ticket revenue and licensing deals.

2014 Preview Questions: Where will the the sacks come from?
Don Brown's defensive schemes are designed to pressure QBs and generate sacks. While the whole of the unit still wasn't great, BC's defense did generate a lot of sacks last year. It was a welcome change to the bend but don't break days of old. Year 2 of Don Brown will probably bring even more pressure, however, I have no idea where it will come from.
Here were BC's sack leaders from last year:
Kasim Edebali -- 9.5 sacks
Kevin Pierre-Louis -- 6 sacks
Josh Keyes -- 3.5 sacks
Steele Divitto -- 3 sacks
Steven Daniels -- 3 sacks
Mehdi Abdesmad -- 2 sacks
Kaleb Ramsey -- 2 sacks
Brian Mihalik-- 2 sacks
It is nice to have Keyes, Daniels, Mihalik and (hopefully healthy) Abdesmad back, the two biggest sackers are gone. Much is expected of true Freshman Harold Landry, but can he match KPL's 6 sacks? Can any of the returning guys double their efforts?
I think Brown will figure something out. I also think last season's total of 36 sacks is reachable, but to do so multiple guys will have to step up and perhaps some of the DBs will have to be involved as a new wrinkle.

Video Game Settlement: one step closer to paying players?
I'm not a lawyer, but I think something like this has more legs than Northwestern players unionizing. The unionizing will take multiple teams joining in and could get caught up in courts. This settlement will put a check (albeit a small one) in the hands of former players.
Who knows how this will all play out? My only real prediction is that we will follow the lead of the schools we want to be associated with (like Duke and Notre Dame). But what the means or when change happens is a mystery.

Experts already forgetting about BC
ESPN posted Brett McMurphy and Mark Schlabach's picks and 10 ACC teams (plus Notre Dame) were slotted. What surprised me is that they don't account for BC getting an at large bid. As we've seen over the years, if a major conference team gets to six wins, they will end up in a bowl. BC's TV ratings in low-level bowls also lead to us backfilling open slots. It could be that neither McMurphy or Schlaback don't think BC will get to six wins. But most of the early previews have the Eagles in that neighborhood. CBS's early projections had BC going to Detroit.
I will make my predictions later this summer, but I am not worried about BC staying home. As usual, if we get eligible, it will all work itself out.

Assessing Mike Gambino and the 2014 baseball season
BC just finished another disappointing Baseball season and yet there doesn't seem to be much talk about the future of Head Coach Mike Gambino. After four seasons the team remains one of the worst in the ACC and failed to qualify for the ACC Tournament. While the showed signs of improvement this season and there is renewed hope about facilities, we have to continue to ask if we have the right staff in place. I am an outside observer so I asked Brian Foley from College Baseball Daily for his opinion. My questions and his answers follow.
1. BC looked better and was more competitive but still had a terrible record. Was the improvement real?
Foley: The improvement was far from real. They played several of the have-nots this year with NC State being a complete failure while they still ended up losing a series to old friend Mik Aoki’s Notre Dame squad which finished with a 9-21 record.
2. Who or what was the biggest surprise of the season and biggest disappointment?
Foley: The biggest surprise to me was the development of Chris Shaw into an upper echelon ACC player. He finished the year with a .329 average and a team high six homers which was the same amount that the rest of the team combined for. Shaw was a disaster as a freshman when he hit .165 with six homers and 19 RBI.
The biggest disappointment continues to be the pitching staff which had a 4.27 ERA which is high seeing as about half BC’s games are against weak northern competition in midweek play and on the Spring Trip.
3. Would you fire Gambino? If no, what are the expectations for next year. If yes, who are potential replacements?
Foley: Would I fire Gambino? I don’t know if the school cares enough to actually fire him. I was attending the America East Tournament this week when one of his former players in Anthony Italiano got a key double to lead the Seawolves to a victory. This was a kid that was not good enough to play at BC but has had a solid little career at the Long Island school.
My first phone call would be to Justin Blood at Hartford. He has made that program into a respectable team which plays hard throughout the game. There were trailing a game by nine runs but wouldn’t give up in the ninth inning when they ended up losing only by four. This is the toughness that is missing right now with the BC program.
My second phone call after Blood would be to Steve Owens at Bryant. He made the NCAA tournament last year for the Smithfield RI school and had a successful run at Lemoyne before heading to the Bulldogs. Lemoyne would be an absolute pain back in the day for schools and Bryant is becoming a new Lemoyne.

A BC angle to the World Cup
I love the World Cup. For me it is the perfect sporting event in that the sport is played at a high level, there are multiple, easy to follow storylines, and best of all it comes during one of the traditional slow times in the sports calendar. But despite being the most popular sporting event in the world, there are still plenty of Americans who don't "get" it or worse don't care. If you are BC fan, I offer another reason to get on the World Cup bandwagon: Alejandro Bedoya. The former Eagle just made the final roster for the U.S. Men's Team and should be a critical contributor to the team.
Just by making the team, Bedoya fans can now claim he's BC's all-time greatest soccer player. Charlie Davies' was an exciting USMT player, but his car accident stunted his career and kept him out of any Cup. Other BC guys have had solid professional careers in the U.S. and abroad, but none has made such and deep or talented World Cup roster.
The U.S. received a brutal draw for the Cup, so this whole thing could be over before it even starts. But if the U.S. advances to the knock out stage, it will need Bedoya to have the tournament of his life. He's an Eagle so he knows about excelling at the right time.

Batten to play 5th year at BC
Former #ODU G Dimitri Batten just confirmed, via text message, that he will transfer to Boston College for his final season.
— Dave Fairbank (@FairbankDP) May 20, 2014
Jim Christian is putting another one of his scholarships to good use, by bringing in Old Dominion transfer Dimitri Batten. Batten is eligible to play immediately.
Batten is another wing, but with Hanlan as the primary point, some of Rahon's old minutes will go to perimeter players. Batten also has a chance to earn playing time with his defense.
While we all wanted a big 2014 recruit, a fifth year is a win-win. Like football, it represents a low risk, mature player.
Now that Christian's got a 2014 recruit and a fifth year, I expect the next scholarship to go to a true transfer.
Boston Politics get involved in college sports
The issues that he's attacking are not really relevant to the current situation. Most athletes have plenty of time to graduate. A fifth year for players who don't work out on the field, is a small, small issue. Medically most of these guys are essentially covered year round. The head trauma debate is relevant, but I would say the NCAA and the teams in Boston are relatively ahead of the game. BC has been granting full medical waivers to head injury victims for two decades (think of Jim Unis). Why isn't Zakim mandating head injury policies for Massachusetts High School sports, the NHL, MLS, and NFL?
I don't mind attacking the system. But the real issue isn't health. It isn't safety. It's money. When Zakim figures out a way to mandate payment for players, then he will have my attention. Right now he just feels like someone trying to make a name for himself.
BC has a lot at risk in this process, but I predict these laws are a long way from being passed and then enforced.

Don't get worked up about Terrell
Terrell committed to Rhode Island after dealing with their program for nearly two years. He was familiar with Hurley and the team. He's been interacting with Jim Christian and BC for a few weeks. Despite being a bigger program, that lack of familiarity is tough to overcome. Plus our roster situation was not as friendly. We have Hanlan returning and he'll play 35+ minutes a game, be the primary ball handler and the leading scorer. And BC has decent depth at wing. Terrell would have come in immediately and played, but the minutes and scoring weren't as clear cut. The situation was much more inviting for a big man like Diallo.
Terrell would have been a huge boost and a great start for Christian, but it is not fair to hold it against the new staff. They scrambled the best they could, but the kid went elsewhere. It will happen again. The key to long-term success is just winning more of these battles than you lose.

Opponent Previews for UMass and Wake Forest
Even as Grobe's Wake teams slid back to their historical norm, they still gave BC tough games. The only reason so little is expected of them this season is due to the wholesale changes made by the new staff. Myerberg predicts a season where they still struggle offensively.
UMass is a trainwreck and one of the worst teams in FBS. Mark Whipple won't change that overnight. Myerberg knows that if they are going to have a miracle season, they need to upset BC in the opener.

The 8+1 schedule is great for BC
Under the new Notre Dame agreement we will play the Irish less (basically six out of ten years). While we've done a good job of finding like-minded or traditional powers to fill the void on non-ND years, there is always a temptation to find a nice win to pad the records. But cupcake opponents don't drive ticket demand and don't bring much national respect. Now regardless of who the coach is or what our AD wants to do, we know that BC will always have one good non-conference game annually.
Finally this move accelerates the idea of BC playing more games out west. The Alumni population in California is growing and the response to the USC game was impressive. We already reach the South through our ACC schedule and the Midwest with our frequent Notre Dame and MAC games. Plus the Pac 12 tend to be the most aggressive schedulers of the major conferences. I think most would gladly sign up for a two-game series with BC.
The ACC is doing this to appease its members, appease its TV partners and strengthen its positioning for the playoff committee. It is not about BC. But it adds stability to our conference and good games to our schedule. That's good for BC fans.

Former Eagles settling into their new teams
As we've been saying, the Packers viewed Rettig's multiple OCs as a positive. He's knows how to learn a new offense quickly.
Nate Freese was the first kicker drafted by the Lions since 1992. Detroit is hoping he's a long-term solution.
People back in Pennsylvania were happy for Andre Williams.
Divitto hopes to make the Jets' roster.
Patchan wasn't the only Tampa native the Bucs signed as undrafted free agents.
Ian White's hometown wrote a long feature on him prior to getting drafted. The San Diego deal will be a nice post script.

Christian lands Diallo
NFL Draft ends with a run on BC players
Williams got things started and then what could have been a slow day, quickly became a great day for Eagles. The Seahawks took KPL in the Fourth Round. I think that's a great fit for him as they like to use players in multiple roles, and he has the speed to play a small end but also cover TEs and RBs. The Lions drafted Freese in the Seventh Round and the 49ers used their last pick on Kaleb Ramsey. Freese should be a sure thing for Detroit. If Ramsey can stay healthy, he should also make the 49ers roster.
After the Draft ended, the undrafted guys quickly found teams. Divitto signed with the Jets, Edebali signed with the Saints, Sinkovec signed with the Ravens, White signed with the Chargers, and Rettig signed with the Packers. The Packer-Rettig situation reminded me so much of Matt Hasselbeck. Hasselbeck went through multiple coaches and coordinators and dealt with a lot of losses while at BC. But the Packers proved to be the perfect situation to become an NFL QB. Rettig has the same chance now.
The one surprise is that Matt Patchan has not signed with any team yet. Given the number of private workouts Patchan had, I think he'll catch on with some team soon, unless there is an issue we are not aware off. UPDATE: Patchan signed with Tampa.
I don't know if any of these guys will be stars, but they are all getting a chance. That's what matters.

Why the NFL Draft still matters to BC
Selling the NFL to any high school prospect is pretty disingenuous. Even the majority of recruits at Alabama and Florida State will not play at the next level. For a long time, BC's pitch to potential players has been about more than football. We sell the BC experience, the education, the city, and getting your degree. Our appeal is about life off the field and life after football. Yet we still need the NFL.
Without the carrot of playing at the highest level, BC wouldn't be BC. As much as we push education, there are plenty of places where a kid can get a great education. Just like there are plenty of places where a guy can just play and focus on football. Our mix of elite football and elite education is a pitch only a few schools can offer. And to effectively sell it, we need to send guys to the NFL. We need the NFL Draft to showcase our best players and validate our process.
The media created the "Harvard during the week, Alabama on the weekend" cliche to mock BC's divided priorities, but the reality is that split is a great position. We should embrace it. There are certain players who want both. And those types of guys who want both, have been the foundation for our past success.
It is unlikely that any BC guys will get drafted Thursday night. By Sunday though there should be a new batch of our guys headed to new NFL teams. And with each selection our staff will be texting and tweeting those Draft updates to a new batch of potential BC guys.

Narrative changed?
I don't know why there are fewer stories this year. My Bing alert only mentions him six times in the last seven days. Maybe writers are moving on. Or perhaps there are just new targets. Either way, I hope he starts getting the credit he finally deserves for both his college and NFL career.

Always be closing
Can confirm that Jared Terrell is at BC now. No other visits planned. Former Oklahoma State commit.
— Adam Zagoria (@AdamZagoria) May 5, 2014
I know it is early but this is a huge week for Jim Christian. First he hosted Jared Terrell Monday. Terrell is the shooting guard who committed to OK State and now wants to stay closer to home. He's elite and he's local. He also sort of fell into our lap when he decided to back out of his Oklahoma State commitment. If we get Terrell, it provides a real shot in the arm. The team will get a player who can replace some of Rahon's offense and Christian will get a player he can build future recruiting classes around. But the sales push for the 2014 recruiting class doesn't end with Terrell. California big man Idrissa Diallo will be on campus this week too. He might not be as important locally as Terrell, but he would still be a huge addition to a team desperate for size.
Christian's reputation prior to BC was that he was a hoops lifer and a gym rat. He wasn't considered a silver-tongued recruiter. But if he gets these two guys, especially given the timing and circumstances, then we might be in for a big surprise on his future recruiting.
