Filling in the gaps around Blauds post on Sean Frazier

Early Wednesday Blauds posted an update predicting Sean Frazier would be BC's new Athletic Director. Of course he hedged his post with this quote at the end:
Which means that while I fully expect Sean Frazier to be the next BC AD, I will not be stunned if it is someone else.

I don't think Blauds knows for sure. From what I gather, the only people that truly know where BC is in the process are Father Leahy and Leo Sullivan. This is what I do know that Blauds either doesn't know or left out:

  • BC has a Board of Trustees meeting on September 28
  • Representatives of the Flynn Fund met with Sullivan and Leahy and both explained that they want a new AD in place soon, so that he or she can make a full evaluation of the football program. Even if someone is not named October 1, the process will not drag on much longer.
  • Leahy and Sullivan also told the Flynn Fund that the new AD will be from the Athletic Department world and have football experience. We won't be following the recent steps of Michigan, Notre Dame and USC by hiring a high-profile alum that doesn't have hands on Athletic Department experience.

I don't know if it will be Frazier. He seems like a fine candidate and I will write more on him if and when he gets the job. But I do agree with Blauds that this process will be over soon.

One more thing...this is Sean Frazier's profile picture on Twitter:

the Twitter picture is hard to overlook -- this guy works for Wisconsin; why would he put a pic of York and the hockey team up if this wasn't a done deal or close to it?

fill us in ATL, what do you know? all i know is he played football at bama, was at merrimack for a bit and currently at Wisconsin. has a hockey background but knows football. also, he's from Strong Island, a definite plus.

He chaired the NCAA D1 Hockey Committee this past season. The Frozen Four was the culmination of that position.

His recent tweets are about a Cape Cod theme and Dunking Donuts. The guy wants this job.

Why do people insist we only hire people with BC connections for things? Sure, it's great if there's a highly qualified candidate who has an existing relationship/degree from the school, but why does everyone think an outsider can't handle it.

GDF had no connections and if retired 5 years ago, he would've been looked at as doing very well here.

mod34b, what BC traditions are you afraid will fall by the wayside if BC hires Frazier (or some other outsider)?

"apbc, if you are not aware of the traditions of BC, I can't help you."

Silly, childish response. Why not respond openly and let us know what you mean? What BC means to you may, just possibly may, be somewhat different than what it means to others. please explain.

apbc12 said...

mod34b, as Joseph already said, I know what BC means to me and what BC traditions I value, I just don't see why an outside hire - i.e. someone who graduated from someplace else - cannot be trusted to embrace and continue the things that make BC special. I'm curious about your reasoning, but your response leads me to believe you don't actually have any.

As for this:
"As for Frazier, on his twitter Frazier says (yesterday) 'Jack pot!! The ending to a great Cape Cod meal!! Boston Cream Pie!!!'

If he is 'the guy,' that kind of tweet seems really inappropriate and suggests a lack of discretion that should in itsself send up a BIG RED FLAG FOR BC."

What's the red flag? What's the lack of discretion? Is Boston Cream Pie slang for something gross I don't know about?

Is any of that intended to respond to the questions you've been asked, or are you ignoring them? In either case, what in those various news stories/links gives you pause about Frazier? Lastly, do you wonder at all why he spelled his own last name wrong in his Bleacher Report profile?

A minor concern, but a concern nonetheless: Will the replacement of Gene mean that the reign of terror of the dreaded Sesame Seed Pretzels in Conte and Alumni will come to an end?

I never understood why they are billed as Boston Pretzels despite the fact that this is the only place in the universe, let alone Boston, where I have ever seen a sesame seed on a pretzel.

To me, Bill Polian is the most logical and qualified person available. He has ties to BC, (his child is a student), he's familiar with the football program and he knows a lot about running successful athletic (a/k/a football) business organizations. I hope Fr. Leahy & Leo Sullivan at least talk to him to gauge his interest.

Ry,

I have tears in my eyes. The only thing stranger are the hot dog buns that are not truly buns but two slices of white bread slammed together.

As far as the new AD goes, you hire the best fit for BC. Period. If that means an outsider, I'm totally fine with that. Quite frankly, a lot of the stuff about BC needs shaking up anyway.

BC is not "THE leading Jesuit University in the world." As a proud double eagle, I feel that there is no shame in admitting that we are second best. Any reasonable observer would agree that Georgetown is the most prestigious Jesuit university.

I bet any potential AD worth their salt does not have a squeaky clean resume. I don't know anything about anything, but I assume you don't get to that height in college sports management without upsetting 1 or 2 or a dozen people along the way. Too many big egos in your path.

And besides, mod, you contradict yourself when, on the one hand, you say to think out of the box, but then on the other complain that we are looking at someone with no BC ties. Which one do you want?

Joseph said...

Hey Mod,Show me someone that has never been fired and you'll probably have someone who was never in position to make serious, adult potentially controversial decisions. Do you really think that BC can't find everything that you found, (and More)? get the best person for the job. Period. That has a lot more involved than a narrow job description. This is a big hire. Do it right.

This guy has hopped around too much according to his CV. Red flag in any industry, even sports.

apbc12 said...

Again, why are connections to BC important?

Joseph said...

Mod, please read the original post by ATL. He merely reports on a Blauds piece. How do you get from there to thinking that everyone wants to hire the guy. I would like to think that possibly some of the folks at BC know what they are doing. But, of course, they didn't ask you so obviously they are not really capable of doing this right.

EL MIZ said...

i don't think it is conclusive based on the articles posted that this guy was fired from Merrimack. the merrimack people in one of the article's says "He (frazier) decided to move on." if frazier decided it, then he wasn't fired.

i have absolutely no idea what makes a good AD and only hope that this Leo guy doing the search has a clue. i would imagine BC's due diligence would turn up if freaking merrimack fired him -- i doubt that is the case.

harrow -- switching jobs may be a red flag, but NOT in this profession. come on...athletics is an arena where people are constantly hopping around and trying to take on more responsibility and move up to a higher job title.

mod34b you point to USC hiring haden or ND hiring swarbrick, but what "BC guy" is sitting around hoping to be AD. its probably a pay cut for someone you envision and whereas USC and ND are both so sports crazy, i doubt any BC alum is saying "i'm gonna quit my job and enter a world i know little about for less money, start kissing ass to raise money and taking crap from media and random ppl 24/7 so that BC can get to an orange bowl!" i just don't think the list is that long -- some had mentioned former player Quentin Williams (now a lawyer) but i never heard anything more.

EL MIZ said...

also mod, one last bit of housekeeping -- why are you so against this guy? what "BC guy" is out there? maybe john mara will sell the giants and be the AD?

i like how you downplay his experience, as if this guy was selling a beer-man at Wisconsin b/c he was in charge of in-game concessions. he also has spent the last few years learning from barry alvarez, as respected a guy as there is in college football, and he actually PLAYED college football so he knows his ass from his elbow.

like i said i know nothing about good ADs vs. bad ones (nor has this guy even been hired), but if there was a thought out search and this guy is the best candidate, so be it. i'll be on board with whoever is hired.

Leaving the particulars about Sean Frazier aside, the new AD must bleed maroon and gold. In my mind that doesn't simply mean loving BC or being a big Eagles fan. It means fundamentally honoring Boston College and what it stands for. It means appreciating how far BC has come in the past 150 years and recognizing the place it is today. It means embodying "Ever to Excel," committing to take BC to greater heights, and understanding the measured role athletics plays in getting there. It means representing BC with integrity and sacrificing one's own ego when appropriate. GDF deserves credit for many of his achievements over the past 15 years, but I think he lost his way later in his tenure.

Old Heightsonian said...

And for the record: no, I don't believe you have to have graduated from the Heights to "get it."

Old Heightsonian said...

CEW,

To quote, "BC is not "THE leading Jesuit University in the world." As a proud double eagle, I feel that there is no shame in admitting that we are second best. Any reasonable observer would agree that Georgetown is the most prestigious Jesuit university."

That may or may not be the case. Some "reasonable" observers may note Georgetown's serious financial problems, its landlocked and overbuilt campus, its relative weakness in the humanities and hard sciences, its diminishing Jesuit community and waning Jesuit commitments more generally, its alarmingly poor stewardship of its resources, and its comparatively modest athletics program and conclude otherwise.

This dude is not qualified because he has never been an AD.

Gene was the AD at Villanova.
Gladchuck was a BC grad.

I would be surprised if someone who was not directly related to Boston College or who does not have experience being an AD is hired.

I don't pretend to have a clue as to whether Frazier is the best fit for BC. He played on an SEC championship team here at Alabama, however, so I am pretty sure he won't put up with a crap football program. Right now that sounds pretty good to me.
