The Legend of the Super Assistant

Big Foot. The Loch Ness Monster. The perfect College Assistant. None are real, yet every time we hire a new coach we get excited by one or two staffers who will magically fill in all the voids and weaknesses of our new Head Coach. Unfortunately that's not how it works. It is always more complicated than that.

The latest rumor is that Maryland Assistant Scott Spinelli is poised to join Jim Christian's first BC staff. Spinelli would be great. He's recruited for an ACC program. He's recruited New England. He would be instant credibility on the recruiting trail. I hope the rumors are true. But Spinelli is only part of the puzzle.

Christian's introduction to BC went well. He said the right things and hit the right notes. But ultimately it will be about wins. I hope that given his history as a head coach he knows this and will adapt. Hiring Spinelli is a sign he gets it. Talking to Hanlan about staying is another sign. Now he needs to get the others to buy in and he needs new players ASAP. I remain optimistic and look forward to staff announcements. But I know the staff is only the first part of building a winner.

Well, with Donahue we were excited about Jones and then not just unexcited about every subsequent assistant, but concerned about their competence. I feel like this post should be more positive.

I do like the fit of Spinelli. Not trying to be a downer. I just think that we cannot put all our hopes on one assistant.

It's a very important step if the guy can help get the type of players we need. Al built and taught a good staff, it's a key part of the HC job. I always thought it strange that the abilities of Al's staff was used against him when instead it should have been seen as a strength of his.

You can fill out the staff with all the "big time" assistant coaches you want, but it doesn't change the fact that Jim Christian is head coach, and Jim Christian is basically a nobody. Great players follow great coaches.

That Christian openly admitted that he needed to get two great recruiters on his staff yesterday is a bad sign. He appears out of his depth, just like Brad Bates.

I saw that Jarvis II is rumored for the staff. If this comes to pass the first thing he should do once on staff is tell Hanlan about his recruit Omar Cook.

Chuckie, please send a note to Fr. Leahy letting him know that you will give an alumni discount on your salary when they want you to replace Bates. Is Ollie a great coach? Proven? Will anyone want to go to YUKON now that Calhoun is gone? Follow Ollie? I'm not too sure, or at least that what Chuckie our next AD says.

Chuckie, please send a note to Father Leahy letting him know that you will give a major alumni contribution after they confirm that Joseph never attended Boston College and has been a full time resident of Bridgewater State Hospital since puberty.
