BC's recent history with new QBs

Football is a team sport, but much of any team's fate lies with the quarterback. BC is in an unenviable position of trotting out a roster of inexperienced QBs. However, BC has managed totally green QBs before. Since the Coughlin/Foley duo left in 1993, BC has started four seasons with quarterbacks without any starting experience at BC (Peterson started at the JuCo level and Murphy started three games at Florida). Here is how we did in those years:

1994: 7-4-1. Mark Hartsell had experience buy not as a starter. The Defense really carried the team as a whole.

2003: 8-5.* Porter had taken a few snaps and Peterson played at the Junior College level, but neither had started at this level. Porter started the season with Peterson getting snaps in the old TOB/Bible second quarter philosophy. Peterson eventually won the starting job and rattled off a bunch of wins to close the season.

2009: 8-5. Tuggle began the season as the starter, but he was a square peg in a round hole with what Spaz and Tranq tried to do. Shinskie eventually took over. As with most of the Spaz years, the offense was bad. But there was still plenty of talent on D and BC went bowling.

2014: 7-6.* Murphy started at Florida, so it is not totally comparable to the other situations nor this season, but since it is the only season where Daz started from scratch, I wanted to include it.

While the reports out of the first scrimmage gave me a little pause, I remain optimistic about the season. I think there is enough talent on offense to take pressure off of Wade and I think the Defense can carry us through the Offense's growing pains.

I think that you need to talk about Matt Ryan. In 2004, he played rarely. In 2005, he played more and finally O'Brien started him. In 2006 and 2007, he blossomed under Jags. Porter and Peterson preceded him. Mattie Ice was the man and still is. It is obvious that BC doesn't want a quarterback. They want a running back. Otherwise, they would give Flutie a shot. Wade took all 70 snaps. What does that tell you? Robinson is the "hare" apparent. Flutie is "toast". Since Swigert is holding for extra points, he won't even be allowed to "carry the water bucket" like his cousin Billy. I say that Wade will fail and Addazio will be gone by Christmas.

ATL - u getting the vibe that Wade might not be all that - at least not yet?

Don't worry Perk, JBQ is just blowing hot air.

"They want a running back. Otherwise, they would give Flutie a shot. Wade took all 70 snaps." is just a dumb statement. By all accounts Wade has the best arm of the bunch. Scrimmage reports say Flutie's biggest play of the day was with his legs and was otherwise over or underthrowing receivers. Not exactly the next coming of Matty Ice.

JBQ is on crack. Flutie is probably more of a dual threat than Wade. But, scouting report on Wade is good. I am excited.

I'm fine with Wade and some inevitable growing pains there. I'm terrified about the OLine. Nothing good coming out of the practice reports there.

I think the comparisons only have relavence w/ Murphy. Daz does not run a Pro Style passing oriented offense. So the TOB/BIBLE QBs don't really matter. This will really come down to whether or not the line jells. Can't wait to find out what happens. This is why college ball is so much fun. Lots of change every year.

Wade is going to shock the world. When the Eagles are 6-0 he'll be touted as the surprise Heisman contender and Addazio will consider a lock for coach of the year. Hilliman will be leading the ACC in rushing yards and ... yeah, somewhere between that and JBQ lies truth. If anyone here had a clue, we wouldn't be here.

Given their ages and lack of experience, I trust that we'll give Wade every opportunity to grow into the position as it seems he has the higher ceiling. I'd expect Flutie to get time in games where we are either up big in the 2nd half or if Wade struggles so much that it make sense to sit him down and let him regroup from the sidelines. Maintaining confidence levels will be the trick, but unless Wade hits the ground running in great form, I'd like to see both guys get meaningful snaps along the way.

Really looking forward to the season. The last two years were gravy but they're in the past. The three year plan starts now. 7-5 w/ a bowl game would bode very well for the future and set up double digit wins as a realistic goal in 2016. Go Eagles! 2 1/2 weeks.

I am not worried about Wade. If the offense is the same as it has been, he doesn't need to be great. He just needs to manage the game and run to the open holes.
