Harrington to Stanford

BC lost one of its top recruits Monday when Connecticut Tight End Scooter Harrington flipped to Stanford. The fact that he is a regional recruit and the son of BC Alumni makes this sting a bit. But I am not going to begrudge him. Stanford is a great school and playing really good football right now. Go wherever you want to go, kid. I didn't go to my parents' alma maters.

What I don't understand is the sky is falling mentality of some BC fans. I have dozens of concerns about Addazio, but watching a recruit -- even a legacy -- flip to another program is not high up on my list. (As a reminder, Jerry York's son played for Notre Dame as did Barry Gallup's son.) Is it a sign of a bigger problem that we lose a kid who was so onboard? I don't think so. Kids flip all the time, especially after a rough season. It is now up to Addazio to keep the class together. One Tight End -- even a great one -- was not going to make or break next season.

BC underachieved last year. There was plenty of talent on the Defensive side of the ball and enough on the Offensive side to be better than we were. That is my concern about Addazio. He made some staff changes, found a QB and is supposedly changing the Offense. How he executes those changes will matter a lot more than Scooter Harrington.

mod34b - IN TOTAL AGREEMENT - are there more de - decommits in the next 10 days and where are the transfers that have been mentioned ??? Big O-Lineman from Rhode Island etc etc.... Basketball is worse (will BC beat an ACC opponent this year ???) !!! No one wants to come to BOSTON COLLEGE. Oh , I am sure that someone will come to post that what you are saying is HYPERBOLE - "the sky is not falling". Thank God that the football schedule is loaded with "Patsies " next year and 6-7 wins will be a CINCH - I GUESS !!!!!!

BC is perching on the "edge of a cliff". They are doing great in hockey and soccer. There are promises of a great revival for next year in the troubled sports. No problem with letting the cards fall where they will. If they go 0 for the ACC in both, then it will be time to hit the panic button. That is where Bates is supposed to be able to read the future and Father Leahy gave him the con. If he goes to Michigan where he wants to return, there would be no alternative than to bring in Coughlin to sweep out the living room.

Why are we surprised? Does not matter who the coach is, they will struggle to get recruits. The stadium crowd is pathetic, media coverage is devoted to the pros, and the facilities are very poor. We are not going to get the best recruits. The only way we can win is to get the overlooked players, run a pro-style system and develop the players we do get. This is why TOB was so successful and we were so stupid, we ran him. TOB is the model for success at BC and Addazio needs to study what he did and copy it. I will take a ceiling of 8 wins and kicking Notre Dame's ass every year in a heartbeat.

Losing a kid like this at a position of real need is terrible. But Daz arguably gave us the worst BC team ever. This is going to happen as a result of that performance. Let's hope it was an anomaly. Stanford crowds aren't any better than BC's btw.

Let us remember that 3 running backs left the team and with the de commit of "Scooter Harrington", we have lost a total of 3 commits including a very highly rated K.J. Gray out of New Jersey. Do you think Addazio is "getting old" with his rants and clichés .Just thinking !!! - are we spending enough time on evaluating coaches ?? And are we utilizing former successful athletes at BC to aid in our "Hiring Process". And I would love to know the individuals that represent the "Think Tank" when hiring situations surface . Interesting Topic - EH !!!!!!

I suppose someday things will improve in football and basketball (assuming we stick it out and the Jesuits don't force a major downgrade) - but it is idiotic to sugarcoat or fail to recognize the total failure of those in charge of running these programs. No - its not the end of the world - but it is very difficult to get better if there is no serious accountability and resulting change for poor performance. There needs to be a fair and impartial assessment by people who know what they are doing in this area followed by recommended changes. If I had the power - I would bring in one or more retired hugely successful athletic directors/coaches from peer institutions to look at our situation jointly and make recommendations. It is just as conceivable that there are very few big changes they would recommend as it would be for them to recommend a sea change in structure, personnel and administration. But doing nothing under these circumstances would be foolish.

gone for a week doesn't matter, come back to the same old we are doomed vibe. I wonder how many times the same thing will be said till the GT game?

Hoib - would you please share your reasons for optimism (and I am serious !!!!) Start with football and then you could switch "gears" and begin to make me feel "upbeat" about our other major revenue sport - Basketball !!! By the way , do you have season tickets to either football and/or basketball. That would be important to note. Thanks !!

"hoob, maybe you need a few more weeks away.... be good for you (and everyone else)... you could dream about what a great program Daz and Bates have built and how there is nothing by golly-good-ah-shucks things to say about your alma mater's football program. Hurrah!! it is all good.... just saying'"

Inedible. Really. So where all the stats? I mean what is the point of an m34 post unless to overwhelm us with stats.

I like mod 34's stats. You may interpret them differently but ignoring them is just letting facts get in the way. Hoib is entitled to his optimism as well. This blog is entertainment. If it irritates you - I strongly recommend you watch Dancing With the Stars or the Bachelor with your wife or girlfriend. Then you will be back here quickly with a better frame of mind and level of tolerance.

I'm not a season ticket holder, because I live too far away, but I do go to games every year. When I don't go I always watch on TV. I'm also a Flynn fund contributor.

I've been a BC fan along time. During those years we've been pretty good sometimes, never great. We've been awful sometimes, like last year. Most of the time we've been somewhere in between. That experience leads me to believe things won't stay as they are for long. If that makes be an optimist, so be it.

I follow sports for the fun of it. Just saying some version of we suck day after day doesn't seem like fun to me, but as Nappy says if that's how you get your jollys feel free.

The 7:52 and 8:08 comments are laughably ironic. And so will the reaction to this one be.

Ah, but the blog informs and amuses. If it were not for the barrage of stats from M34 i would have no idea of whether to like or not like the situation. Sort of like watching 5 guys telling me, at half-time, what I just watched. MUTE.

"Hoob - if you follow sports for fun, why must you so often make negative comments, without a hint of wit, about other posts and commenters? Is that fun? Eg. "If that is how you get your jollies"."

I love hearing stat-man taking about "wit". Stats are so witty. Whan was the last post from statman that was not negative and backed up by all the uncited stats(made up maybe to prove a negative point) Who has ever verified the stats from statman? I'll bet no one. Typical case of polemics
.
