Looking back at Jim Reid's 1994 Defense

My memories of Jim Reid's one season at BC are fond. He may have inherited a talented roster, but he helped maximize their potential. I don't know what he's going to keep from Don Brown's scheme or what he will implement on his own, but this look back at a defensive battle against Virginia Tech is interesting. Some things of note:

-- BC is playing a lot of zone coverage, so that is different from Brown's preferred man and Cover 1 schemes.
-- At the time, Virginia Tech was a run-heavy team with some option plays, so BC crowds the box throughout and the LBs are very aggressive on run stopping.
-- Like Brown, he has his down linemen mix things up with stunts.
-- He doesn't need to blitz too often (but that is also because VT was so vanilla).

Some non-Reid things to notice:

-- This was the first game in Alumni after the renovation/expansion.
-- Dave Sims and Doc Walker are on the call and sound the same as they do today.
-- Old friend Gary Tranquill was calling plays for the Hokies.

i think im relatively ok with the hire.

How many games does Daz have to win next year for posters to be satisfied or for the season to be a success/ship being on right path again?

im thinking next year has to produce 8 wins for me to be happy plus a bowl win.

Six.

He needs three to keep his job.

I think 6 and a bowl game he'll keep his job. 8+ including a signature win showing the team is on the right track will make me think he deserves to.

That means winning two ACC games. The coaching changes are positive. Now, it is a matter of personnel. Do they have the players? The answer for basketball is a trove of "lousy" players. After the Spring, we will know from reports on sites such as this if the team has players. The defense appears to be fine. It is the offense that matters. If Towles gets hurt, then we are in trouble. Towles is 6 ft 5. BC needs to recruit some bigger players.

Deek Pollard was the reason that 1994 defense was so good. He got that DL to play with great aggressiveness and technique. He also had stunts and blitz packages that were tough to handle. We'll play our share of man, but not as much as with Brown.

I'm hearing the Iowa linebackers are really sad to see Reid go. The players loved him and he was great with developing talent. We just need him to keep the defense rolling and hope that the offense can vastly improve.

7 RS wins. i'll take Wagner, Umass, Uconn, Buffalo as 4. that leaves 3 and i like our chances against Cuse, GT and one other.

if the transfer QB is halfway decent, maybe we make a run at an 8th win.

it all starts up front though, that OL performance just has to be better.

I don't see Bates firing Addazio under any circumstances next year for on field performance alone unless its a horrible season coupled with a loss to Wagner or UMass.

Gary Tranquill is no friend of mine.

Yeah - i dont think he gets fired for anything less than 5 or 6... but just from a personal level i think he should win 8 games for me to be hopeful about him being the HC going foward.

I'm still in my 30s, and when I was in college none of Wagner, UMass, Uconn, and Buffalo were 1-A. Neither was Richmond. Awesome scheduling.
