What to learn from other team's coaching changes

Regardless of how you feel about Jim Christian, most would agree that he deserves at at least one more season. But BC can learn a bit about future changes by watching what happens to some of BC's future football and basketball opponents.

1. Available names.

Plenty of names will be floated for jobs, but not all will get hired. If a coach is a candidate this year, they wil probably be available next year.

2. Available players.

BC's fifth year experience this season was a disaster. But BC still needs size and experience next year. As coaches get fired or move on, some of their former players will want to explore new opportunities. Our coaches need to start networking to those players and get one or two to BC.

At this point the BC athletics situation goes way beyond the hoop team. To use the military term, things are FUBAR. We need a full review of what Nick Saban calls the process, and until that is done no more coaches should be changed. We need someone like Louis Freeh to come in and do a top to bottom investigation of what has been done re: BC athletics, and then provide detailed recommendations. The first person he should talk to is Jerry York, and the last Fr. Leahy. Something similar to what he did at PSU after the Sandusky scandal.

I have said countless times that BC needs a full review of its Athletics Department and decision processes before it does anything else. But the dead silence from the school after this fiasco just confirms the unfortunate reality that the people managing BC athletics have their heads up their asses. It makes you wonder how other functions and departments at BC would look if placed under the same scrutiny.

Seems like this was forever ago. Talent and toughness at every position on the court, and a treat to watch them play.

Need to set the football program aside for now. One bad year on offense does not constitute a trend --- timing with winless hoops season magnifies the issue but does not change the fact that with some broader perspective, the program is not in bad shape. Addazio overachieved early, underachieved last year. Needs to let go of the offense entirely and delegate to a good offensive coordinator, but think he deserves one more year.

The state of the hoops program is a different matter entirely and is sad. BC had a respected program for a stretch of many years under Tom Davis, Gary Williams, O'Brien, and Skinner. Maybe not NCAA title contender talent (except for the year with Smith, Williams, Dudley front line) but fun teams to watch, and tough and gritty (like Bell/Harley/Singletary team). The program has regressed badly ove the past several years. The above coaches had similar challenges, but they built successful teams in their time at BC.

Not sure if Christian is in their class and not watching closely enough any more to have an opinion on whether the players play hard for him. The ACC is loaded with ND and Louisville and Syracuse added to the mix. My inclination is to give him one more year to see if the development of younger recruits make a difference.

That said, if Christian goes after 5th year guys, he CANNOT go after guys who monopolize the ball like Carter. This hinders the development of younger players. Focus on a low post scorer (or wing player) who gets points through the flow of the offense so other guys can develop. Hoping that having a real PG running the offense (Graves) leads to some improvement. That's been missing for a couple years.

Mod - per your quote, Addazio overachieved in years 1 and 2. he is what his record is for those years. he took a 2-10 team that had stopped competing and went 7-6 with them the following year. the Tyler Murphy year we were competitive in every game (and really should have won against Clemson, the no-call safety still bothers me).

the end of year standings are based on Wins and Losses, not your artfully picked curated stats like "average run play on 2nd down versus FBS median z-score" or whatever you are citing these days. last year stunk, years 1 and 2 didn't - get over it.

BC produced three NFL pro bowl QBs ( Flutie, Hasselbeck and Ryan). How long will it take Daz to produce one? With his system he may need several millennia.

I was ok with the direction of the team in Y1 and Y2. It is hard to be dissapointed with Y1 taking a 2 win noncompetetive team to 7 wins - Maybe you expected 9 or 10 wins that year - I can't say I objectively did.

Y2 was probably not a great success or great failure - more of status quo which is only ok if you build on it in Y3 - which they did not.

Y3 was an utter disaster

Y4 - if we are looking ahead as i think we should -- Ive asked this question before -- what is an acceptable win total to think the program is on the right track -- looking at the schedule i think they need 8 wins for me to think next year is a success

What is the consensus? - 8, 9? - mod would you think the program is headed in teh right direction if they won 10 games? or just undefeated?

mod - what are you arguing? that we were "successful" or that we "overachieved." they are two different concepts. i agree that 7-6 is not a "successful" season. a new coach taking over a team that went 2-10 and with the same players going 7-6 is overachieving for that particular year and that particular group of players. if that is not overachieving, what would overachieving have looked like for that group? maybe winning the national championship? give me a break. oh and Williams was a Heisman finalist.

regarding your stats - i really don't care what the freaking offense ranked vis a vis the ACC as a way to determine how the team was - i watched the games and have a pretty good gauge of how good we were. i thought years 1 and 2 the offense did a nice job of playing to the strengths. Williams we rode into the ground but we had a good line and he was a beast. we played conservatively, kept our D off the field, and it wasn't an offense built to finish in the top 3 of ACC total yards, but again, who cares, that is literally just a random stat you are picking out of a hat. in year 2 we were in every game except Louisville, won 7 games, had a nice win over a top 10 team, played as tough of a game as you could against the two conference heavy weights, and should have won a game against a regional power (penn st) if our K could make kicks. that was acceptable to me. last year was not acceptable. next year will be a big gauge of addazio, but i'm not ready to say that Spaz was better than him, as you intimate with your random cherry picking of winning % stats from whatever applicable years you see fit.

speaking of last year, how good was the defense last year? can you give me those stats? where did we rank vs. the ACC? where did we rank vs. Clemson, who almost won the national championship? does that mean we were as good or better than Clemson?

JBQ may be incoherent but I do think it's better that than coherent and obsessive. Multiple posts every day about the exact same thing? There's something unhealthy there. I feel pity.

@CT: "Incoherent", maybe it's just beyond your comprehension. "mod34b" has it right. He and others may be obsessive but frustration has a way of doing that. The ineptitude goes all the way to the top in both the president and the chair of the board of directors. The answer is to being in Tom Coughlin to sweep out the mildew.

"I've not seen his hands however." That made me chuckle. I for one don't agree that Xian should be given another year. Another year accomplishes jack except for lowering what Xian is owed when he's handed walking papers after next year. If you go 0-18 in anything (except if you're John Kasich), you're immediately given the pink slip.
