The MLB Draft might be the most player friendly. A prospect can get drafted and still play in college. However, there is a catch. Once a player starts college baseball, he cannot return to the MLB Draft until the end of his junior year. BC commitment Dante Baldelli is dealing with that right now.
The Phillies drafted Baldelli. Depsite his commitment to BC, Baldelli could still be gone. If he agrees to a deal before school starts, he's a Phillie. If he waits, he's an Eagle for three seasons.
This whole scenario is tough on the coaches. They need elite talent, but cannot have too many empty roster spots or unused scholarships. Good luck to Baldelli and to BC Baseball's coaching staff.

This guy really doesn't have a hard choice at all. He was the 1,157th pick in the draft. If he goes pro, he will barely get any money. If he has a decent college career, he would easily get drafted much higher.
Agree - the odds are very long he'd ever get out of the minors. BC gives him an education and the baseball growth he needs. If he does well academically and athletically - he'll have more and better options. Really a no brainer for him.
plus, who in their right mind wants to be associated with the Phillies.....:-)

Why would Baldelli go to BC? There must be a reason. "If you build it, they will come". A number of the 28 Jesuit colleges and universities are switching from Jesuit leadership. Up to and until the good red headed Rev leaves, BC is still a Godly place. Mistakes are acceptable but deplored. Addazio, Christian, and Bates are big mistakes. Father William P needs to huddle with John Fish, the CEO of a top 200 economic construction entity and chair of the Board of Trustees and cut mistakes to a minimum. Just how can Mr. Fish countenance an economic disaster of a three year extension at 2.6 million per year? Brian Kelly for God's sake has a base salary of 900K. Come on Father Red Head take responsibility for your mistakes and do the honorable Irish thing and make it right. TOB has red hair at least what is left. Addazio has shaved his head. Shouldn't this have been a "red flag" in "hurricane" season?
So he got drafted low, he still got drafted. There are, what 1,500-2,000 player slots in rookie ball around the country, Tommy Lasorda had to force the Dodgers to pick Mike Piazza with their last pick, then force the Dodgers to sign him. He could also be a low pick b/c they think he's going to go to BC (or college in general).
Blist--He was drafted so low because he probably doesn't have the skill set currently to be a big time prospect. Financially, it makes a ton more sense to play a few years in college successfully and then get drafted much higher. With a higher draft pick, there's a higher signing bonus and salary. Plus he would get a free education at a top university if things don't work it. That beats flaming out of a rookie league or low A ball in a few years.
