There were many "what could have been"s of the Steve Donahue era. One of the most intriguing was Darryl Hicks. But the injury bug that hit him in high school continued at BC to the point where he never even played for Donahue. Once he finally got on the court this year, we saw glimpses of potential, but nothing to make a difference with the terrible team. Now Hicks is gone. He's another example of predictable attrition as the roster truly becomes Jim Christian's.
With the depth the team has at guard and on the wings, Hicks was the odd man out. His minutes and productivity will be easily distributed. I don't think the loss will mean much to the success of this year's team.
I wish Hicks luck at his next stop. My advice would have been to stick out another year, get your BC degree and transfer. But maybe with all the bad luck he has had, he just wants a new start.

was he really the odd man out? i am having trouble keeping track of who is still around.
SBT and Milon - two freshman recruited by Christian - have transferred. Carter is out of eligibility. Diallo - another guy recruited by Christian and Co - transferred.
bigs - Reyes (maybe RS-FR?), Popovic (FR), Jeffers (SR)
wings - AJ Turner (SO), Meznieks (SO), Owens (SR), Tava, (SR), Sagay (FR)
guards - JROB (SO), Graves (FR), Bowman (FR), Chatman (???)
still not sure this team is going to make any progress over last year's.
also the transfers are a troubling trend. i know its common in college hoops these days, but if we are going to be turning the roster over YOY every year i'm not sure how we're ever going to be good given our difficulties recruiting talent as is. the blue print, it seems to me, would be to bring guys in who we are going to develop and build continuity as a team.
It's all about PT. I understand why guys leave, the problem is the guys JC brings in. He just seems to be playing musical chairs w/ talent the is way below ACC level.
Hoib and El Miz, you know a lot about the BC hoops scene.
Unlike football, there seems to be a good amount of talent in Boston and within a few hours drive of Boston, and quite bit of talent at prep schools in New England. All heading to places other than BC.
How good/bad a recruiter is JC and Staff? They do not even seem to be really competing with even the lower level ACC teams (or even BE teams) for talent. Are academics really an issue for BC - hoops guys seem to be the worst academics guys on campus already.
I think Leahy accepts the losing, and isn't interested in making the effort to win. The new ACC deal will give him even less incentive to try to win. Till he goes, I see us as the Washington Generals of the ACC. Just a bunch of stooges collecting ACC welfare, like Vandy does, and Rice used to.
I believe Hicks was the last piece of the Donahue disaster to leave. With the way the roster was constructed as a result of Skinners last mega class and the subsequent mega class by Donahue, this turnover is actually a good thing.
JC took a large class as well, but many of those guys have left (Diallo, SBT, etc). Now that he has a decent core of FT scholarship guy combined with taking a bunch of transfers helps smooth this all out. Hopefully, worst case, this will eliminate the need for another mega class by JC or the next coach.
As to the recruiting thing, I think Spinelli is legitimately a good/well respected recruiter. I don't know enough about Heath, but he has been a successful major head coach at tough spots (I also don't know how long he'll be at BC). The local talent issue is much deeper than just JC. Skinner never had a positive relationship with the local AAU programs (and that's what drives the boat, not high schools). BABC will never willingly promote a kid to come to BC, and that goes back to their belief that BC is not big time (and lack of facilities). Again, this is deeper than Christian and his staff, its crotchy old men who make a living off of 17 year olds and steer them in different directions).
To the point above, the transfer thing is rampant, and going to be a part of CBB going forward, so just get used to it.
Thanks for the insights Kash

Good points, but at this point I'm still a doubting Hoib when it comes to JC. Onahue clearly didn't have a clue about what it takes to be competitive in the ACC. I think JC knows what to do, but he hasn't shown me that he can get the horses in to accomplish what's necessary. Great quote in Pat Summit's obit by her Dad. After she lost her first game she shared her doubts w/ her Dad. His comment was you don't bring a team of Mules to win the Kentucky Derby. She got the message, and started recruiting blue chippers, the rest is history.
Vandy basketball has been good for 15 years.
