Rutgers' collapse is perfect for Addazio

For years New Jersey was a free for all in College Football recruiting. Penn State took a ton of players, but programs like Nebraska, Miami and even Wisconsin used the Garden State to build programs. BC was also one of the programs that looked to New Jersey for key talent. All the while Rutgers was a mess and never really a factor with the state's top players. That started to change with Greg Schiano. He threw himself into recruiting and also built relationships with the high school coaches. And with that talent upgrade came Rutgers' only sustained period of success in decades. Years and two head coaches removed from Schiano, things have reverted to old and BC is taking advantage of it all.

The latest New Jersey verbal is OL/DL prospect Khris Banks. He is not some five star, must get, but he is the type of solid prospect BC has always developed. More importantly he is the type of prospect Rutgers used to get under Schiano. In fact, Rutgers offered Banks before BC did, but he still decided to leave the state.

As provincial as it may seem, Rutgers main problem in New Jersey is a lack of Jersey assistants. It is all outisiders. BC is hitting the state with former Rutgers assistant Anthony Campanile. As noted many times, Campanile is also a member of one of the most prominent New Jersey football families. That history and local knowledge is the first step in finding kids and getting their coaches and parents on board.

I don't know much about Rutgers coach Chris Ash. I don't know if he will adapt or make changes to help local recruiting. Let's hope he's stubborn and determined to do things his way. It will make our recruiting that much easier.

Welcome to BC, Khris. Thank you, Coach Campanile - as we know, there are great players in New Jersey.

This young man can play OL or DL. It will be very interesting to watch how he develops.

Go BC!

The post and the comment share a key word. "Develop." That hasn't happened with one single player on the offensive line in 4 years. Hopefully player development on the o-line starts this season.

Ditto for QB !!!!!!!

And perhaps at RB, though the O-line's inability to block has a lot to do with that, too.

"It all depends on what the meaning of 'is' is". The recruiting is actually looking good. Will BC get the Ws? It looks like 4-8 and a reprieve based on the recruiting and connections to Urban Meyer from whence the new A.D. comes.----This is year 5 at 2.6 mill per. Someone needs to stop the bleeding. Northern Illinois will say a lot.

Completely agree.

How can you look at this team and say 4-8? A year older and probably more talented across the board. I look at Northern Illinois, wake forest, central Michigan, Virginia, NC state, Connecticut, & Syracuse as games we should absolutely win. That's 7 right there. We steal one from a depleted Notre Dame roster at home or a Va Tech team who lost a lot of upperclassmen talent and that's 8. Enough with all the unnecessary pessimism

Online spread for NI game is down from last check(BC -3) to BC -2.5.

Virginia and Syracuse are on the road. NC State is due to beat us(have better talent than us again).

Geezer eagle said...

NYC, by your rosy analysis everything has to fall BCs way. Possible? Yes
Probable? Hell no. 5-7

NYCEagle said...

I look at Virginia, Syracuse, NC State, Wake, Notre Dame, and Va Tech as toss up games, regardless of home field advantage. None of these places are Death Valley. If we win even just 3 of those 7 games we're looking at a 6-6 season and another bowl appearance. Anything less is an utter disappointment

3 of 6*

@NYCEagle: The 4-8 is a prediction from Athlon Magazine. I am just repeating what is in print. That appears to be a consensus of predictions. That is the "paper trail". You could very well be right.----The first online posting for Northern Illinois was N.I.(-2). This evolved quickly to BCs favor. Again, you could very well be right. Everyone is hopeful.---- However, I go with Monk the TV detective. "I may be wrong but I don't think so". Nevertheless, the stage will be set at Northern Illinois on August 31. Till then, everything is conjecture.

The QB position is the weakest it has been in the last 25 years and the position has zero protection.

The defense will be very good especially early in the season but they are going to get worked very hard in the middle of the season and will be worn by the end of the season when we play teams on our level. Doesn't bode well for W's.

The special teams will probably be a mess early in the season with Al gone.

Six wins is the limit. You don't get to six unless you beat NI(we will) and Wake(always a "bloody" mess).

I think the national media are vastly underestimating the BC defense. You have the nation's leading sack returner, some solid linebackers and a couple other linemen that can get to the QB. Landry is going to draw double teams all season and will be chipped by Tight ends and running backs. While this slows Landry down, it also distracts the receivers from their routes. We are going to be a menace on QBs this year (barring injuries of course).

Also, this is Year 2 with Reid. The players will better understand his system and be in a better position to make plays.

Granted, we still have concerns with the offense, but I don't think it will be as bad as the past 2 seasons. Not sure with this schedule that BC gets to 8 wins, but 7 is very doable. I see ND, Va Tech, Fl State, Clemson and L'ville as sure losses. This would mean we would have to clean-up against Wake, NC State and Syracuse - a feat that has never been done in the Addazio era. Dang, I think I just talked myself into another 6-6 season. Ugh!

I like our defense a lot. Landry, Allen, and Strachan will set the tone upfront all year, and our secondary is faster across the board than it has been since I can remember. Which is absolutely necessary considering the caliber of receivers in the ACC. Our offensive line is a year older, and thus likely 15-20 pounds heavier at every spot. Don't discount the size factor when it comes to starting young lineman early in their college careers. QB is the biggest question mark. I think if we give Wade time he is 100% capable of helming a west coast, dink and dunk, ball control offense. Keep it a one possession game into the fourth quarter and let Reid turn up the heat on blitzes. Anything can happen

And then there are the intangibles: injury, weather, morale, coaching, etc. Again, everything has to fall our way for a winning season.

Maybe the pessimism is burning away much as summer clouds.

Hell Trump beat the odds (and much else) to be Prez. Maybe BC will shock everyone and win games they historically lose(get blown out in)

Then again I have started celebrating this great country earlier than in past.

I can see BC winning more than 5 games. Then the spin doctors and politics will determine what happens going forward

Max said...

Typo - CAN’T see BC winning more than 5

I agree with a lot that kh says, but I don't agree with the 11:38 post - QB position weakest in 25 years.

That would be 2 years ago after Wade got hurt.

I'm hoping for a pleasant surprise this year.

Speaking of OL protection, does anyone know the status of the big freshman who got hurt at the end of the year? Knee?

John said...

Elijah Johnson.

eagleboston said...

John is correct. Two years ago when Wade got hurt was absolute bottom. There was also a year under Spaz where Justin (??) Tuggle and another forgettable qb were under center and the offense was atrocious. Spaz was the absolute worst BC coach in decades and set us back years. One bad hire destroyed a program that was built to a consistent, respectable level by TOB and Jags (mostly TOB).

Knucklehead said...

Same QB. He is tied with himself for being the worst in the last 25 years. Kid is not good. Dazzler won't/can't let it go. Just like Justin Frye.

I think KH misses somebody. They both say the same thing in every post. #firedazandfrye.

Really inspiring bromance.

Knucklehead said...

Who do I miss, CT?

John said...

Uncle Dave

What does that mean John?
