The DEFINITIVE ranking of every BC Bowl game

When Iowa fans turned their nose up at the Pinstripe, while BC fans got excited, I started thinking about BC's bowl history. We've now been to a lot of them. Some were better than others. What I felt was needed was a reminder and perspective on it all. So the following is a ranking of all of BC's bowl games. I tried to rate them on their relative prestige, history and fan excitement (at the time). I also tried to ignore the outcome since that didn't impact our fan excitement about the selection or location or opponent. Obviously I am right about all of these, but you can leave your (wrong) opinions in the comments section. [UPDATED: when I pasted the chart, I forgot to paste the Liberty Bowl. It has been added.]

1. 1985 Cotton Bowl vs Houston. This was the culmination of the Flutie era and at the time one of the "big" bowls.

2. 1941 Sugar Bowl vs Tennessee. BC's only claim at a National Championship.

3. 1940 Cotton Bowl Classic vs Clemson. The "rivalry" with Clemson was born. Historically it is not an important game for either program but the Cotton Bowl was a big deal.

4. 1943 Orange Bowl vs Alabama. The Leahy days. There weren't a lot of bowls, so BC still going to one was a big deal.

5. 1983 Liberty Bowl vs Notre Dame. Flutie vs the Irish. It was big at the time. Would probably be bigger now given Flutie's legend and our history with Notre Dame.

6. 1993 Hall of Fame Bowl vs Tennessee. Coughlin breathed new life into the program. This was the last time BC played in a major, traditional bowl.

7. 1986 Hall of Fame Bowl vs Georgia. This was a major bowl game in the post-Flutie era.

8. 1994 Aloha Bowl vs Kansas State. This was when the Aloha Bowl was a big deal. It was the first game of the season and was on Christmas Day. We had a fun D to watch and got to take on a highly ranked K-State team.

9. 2007 Champs Sports Bowl vs Michigan State. While a letdown after losing the ACC Championship, people were excited about a Florida bowl against a real team.

10. 1982 Tangerine Bowl vs Auburn. This was a minor bowl even then but the Flutie era had a special feeling to it all.

11. 2001 Music City Bowl vs Georgia. BC had a great season and was a surprise invite to face a ranked Georgia team in Nashville.

12. 2014 New Era Pinstripe Bowl vs Penn State. This was the end to a pleasant surprise type of season against and old rival.

13. 2017 Pinstripe Bowl vs Iowa. Right bowl, right place, right time against a real team. General fan and program satisfaction.

14. 1994 Carquest Bowl vs Virginia. This was a newish bowl and a big disappointment given what nearly happened that season. A running theme: BC blew a shot at a major bowl in the final weekend.

15. 2000 Aloha Bowl vs Arizona State. BC took a lot of flack for not being deserving this bowl. But it was still Hawaii against a real team.

16. 1999 Insight.com Bowl vs Colorado. The former Copper Bowl was one of the first to take a DotCom name. Very few BC fans went to Tuscon but there was relief to be back in a bowl.

17. 2004 Continental Tire Bowl vs North Carolina. There wasn't a lot of excitement about this game because we had just blown our shot at a major bowl, but playing UNC in their home state had some novelty at the time.

18. 2005 MPC Computers Bowl vs Boise State. This was one of the biggest slights during BC's bowl streak. However, the whole program and fanbase had a chip on our shoulders and there was the novelty of playing Boise on the blue turf.

19. 2009 Emerald Bowl vs USC. After doing a tour of weird bowls, fans were fine with San Fran again and excited to play USC. But the Spaz era was low enthusiasm in general.

20. 2003 San Francisco Bowl vs Colorado State. This was when San Francisco was fresh for BC and their was still some optimism regarding TOB. Colorado State did not generate much excitement.

21. 2006 Meineke Car Care Bowl vs Navy. It was a return trip to Charlotte against a team we had played many times. Plus we were between coaches.

22. 2008 Music City Bowl vs Vanderbilt. This was the ultimate letdown after losing another ACC Championship game.

23. 2013 AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl vs Arizona. Shreveport? Weird destination but a good opponent. It was nice to return to bowls at the start of the Addazio era.

24. 2016 Quick Lane Bowl vs Maryland. A trip to Detroit against a terrible Maryland team.

25. 2011 Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl vs Nevada. It was back to San Francisco for a second year in a row. Nevada had Kaepernick, but there was little buzz about this game.

26. 2002 Motor City Bowl vs Toledo. This was a letdown season and a terrible bowl.

Wow. This list shows just how pathetic the BC football program has been. Thanks for sharing! I mean I knew the history was bad, I just didn't realize it was this bad.

Lol for someone who doesn't care about BC, you sure do go out of your way to quickly comment on a small blog that's most only known in BC circles. I mean no disrespect towards Bill - he does a fine job running this blog and I prefer it over BCI!

You think you bother us with your petty comments, but I just laugh every time you comment here. Clearly, something wrong happened in your life to lead you to bitterly troll a small BC blog. No one cares that you went to Stanford, UNC, Duke, Harvard or wherever. Good for you. We're damn proud of our BC degrees and don't need some internet troll's approval. If you are in fact from any of those schools, then I feel bad for their alumni because you are a poor representation of them.

On a side note, as a NYC resident and Yankees fan, I've selfishly been praying for the Pinstripe Bowl for weeks now. Can't wait to watch BC play right in my backyard! Go Eagles!

I understand the reasons why you have the 1993 Tennessee game high on the list but I'd move it lower because we got beaten pretty good. I'd put the 2001 Music City Bowl vs Georgia higher since we beat a name brand SEC team. That game felt like an accomplishment, not an end of the year exhibition.

BCEagles204, everything you said is so pathetic. You need some serious help. I feel very sorry for you. Especially since you seem to be proud of going to BC for some reason. Wow, you really are an absolute loser. Thanks for proving it to us kid. By the way, you are needed back at your register at McDonald's. You loser. TKO.

I was at the Carquest. And the west virginia debacle that preceded it. That was also the year of the famed “kick” that knocked ND out of number 1. A pretty eventful season now that I think about it.

And also later the following winter, Coughlin left. Bummer.

The Tangerine Bowl experience was an absolute blast. First bowl game in 40 years - Orlando - Disney World - Downtown Disney - Doug Flutie vs Bo Jackson.......

Auburn fans were fun and every time they yelled "War Eagle", I yelled "War Surplus". ☺️

The bowl became the Citrus Bowl and it was a sellout, as I recall, with maybe 15,000 Boston fans flying down.

Even though we lost (32 to 25 I think, with a late Eagles TD) the experience was a blast and we knew we were on the rise - like now, hopefully.

Go BC - beat Iowa.

John said...

I was at the Cotton Bowl too - miserably cold day with sleet at the end of the game.

Thank goodness we won, but we were all hoping for a bowl game against Texas or any team with Texas in its name (A+M, Christian, Tech) but Houston won out.

We ended up in the Top 5, our best ever in my lifetime. But we literally almost froze and we were miserable during the 45 to 28 victory, because we were not prepared for the change in the weather and not dressed properly.

The Tangerine Bowl in Orlando was more fun than the big Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Location is very important, and so is the opponent.

I think Iowa is a good, strong opponent for us, a team that destroyed Ohio State this season!

Go BC.

NYCeagle. Good you understand Knucklehead. Your patience is needed.

Knucklehead needs help. He turns on everyone he speaks to - slamming one as a moron, the next as a bitch. Even you, Mr NYC, will get your wallop.

Our Knucklehead, seeking to replicate the negative attention that his tormentors gave him, lies constantly and pretends to be a BC grad even though, obviously, he plainly lacks a proper education as to grammar, manners, and grace. Even the most troubled BC grad would not constantly present himself as such a person.

Indeed, this fella thinks it’s ok to attack commenter’s children or uses Uber-insensitive words like retard.

So when he says “as i’ve already said, ” you can hear the echoes of his tormentors.

When he blasts people for supposedly having “reading comprehension issues,”, think about Knucklehead being scolded for not listening - harshly.

God bless the young man during this Christmas season. Hope he gets help.

Let’s offer Knucklehead kindness when he is once again senselessly mean. Everyone - even Knucklehead and the Grinch - will warm with a Little joy.

Gerry said...

No Liberty Bowl against ND? I know that it was a close BC loss, against an ND team that badly underachieved, and the weather was absolutely wretched, but that has to be more significant than the "Fight Hunger" Bowl on a January 9th or whatever date that game was.

I'm pretty sure I am more pumped about this game then any other native Iowan. I grew up watching the hawkeyes, then went to BC, and then back to Iowa for grad school. One comment I'll make about Iowa is that they also have been to a lot of bowl games (29), but recently they do not prepare well for bowl games. I was at the Outback last year when Florida demoralized them, and at the Taxslayer Bowl three years ago when Tennessee did the same. Iowa fans are not sure if they will see the team that whipped OSU and Nebraska, or looked pathetic against Northwestern and Wisconsin.

Anyway, I'll be springing for a box if anyone wants in.

Every year around the time of the NFL draft, we have the annual "What Mike Mamula could have been" post. In short, he crushed it in the combine. But didn't live up to that potential as a player.

Kind of like right now with the bowl selection process. Any year that BC becomes bowl eligible, BC gets dumped on because of poor ticket sales, poor attendance, poor TV ratings or some combination of all three. Or maybe people don't like the coaches' haircuts. Who knows. The point is that we've seen this movie many times, but we still bitch about it like it's something new. Unless BC wins the ACC or goes undefeated, they'll go to a not-a-tier-1 bowl.

I guess just be glad the team made it to a bowl. The players have a reason to keep playing and something special to remember.

Iowa is meaningless to me.

Unknown said...

BC has terrible fans, therefore they go to mediocre or terrible bowl games. It's pretty simple.

BCballer said...

I agree 100% with the comment above re: the Tangerine Bowl in 1982. Great times and since it had been so long since BC went bowling, it was a sign of a new era on The Heights, weather was great, and excitement level on campus matched the electricity in McHugh Forum and Roberts Center during big games. GREAT time to be an Eagle.

Gotta admit, I LOVE seeing Craig Yeaster post. Don't know the guy/girl, but you just know everytime he posts it's cuz he's pissed that BC is BC, and he's whoever the heck he is. That's enough for me...and hopefully he'll react to this post too, so I know the scab got ripped open yet again haha.

Let us offer prayers for both ATL and Knucklehead

Key stat: comments in the last 24 hours - ATL - 0; Knuckle - 20.

Eagle in Atlanta, in Latin, Aquila in Atlantus, we pray you connect with your blog home. A story: there was a man who built a house and had many children. The children and the man loved sports. But every Sunday, the man would abandon his family to go to the local bar, to try to connect with other men. The men would curse and use ethnic slurs and constantly demeaned each other. The man thought he too was now a man. He never realized that as soon as he left the bar, the other men would make fun of him and that they were not his friends. One day, he came home and all his children we gone. They knew their father did not care about them. He had proven that through years of neglect.

We pray ATL shows some attention to his own blog home and instills a modicum of standards and decency here. Clean up your home ATL. Do not hide.

We pray for Knucklehead, in Latin alvum motus, that he gains some capacity to see that his need for attention is ruining the very place where he like to be. Let me share story: there was a barn animal, a jackass, that loved his barn. It was a safe place to be. The Jackass would run around with joy and knock into anyone he wished. He would leave excrement everywhere. He was proud that "he made it." The other animals would yell, but to no avail, the Jackass did not care. The Jackass would constantly vomit his thoughts to any and all. One day, the other animals got together, lead by the Georgia Fox, and feasted on roasted Jackass. The Barn returned to normal.

We pray that Knucklehead stops spewing his toxic garbage and embraces the good. If you need a model of decency, look to Big Jack Krack.

God Bless.

I'm more or less good with any post season game against a P5 opponent. It's the games against Boise State, Toledo, Nevada and Colorado State, that didn't do much for me. Things hardly ever going according to plan for BC sports, but hypothetically let's say BC wins the pinstripe bowl with Dillon having another monster game. We'd end the season at 8-6 as objectively one of the hottest teams in football and with a potential running back on the 2018 Heisman watch. In this pie in the sky scenario, does BC crack the top 25 rankings to start the season?

Unknown said...

One of the hottest teams in the country? Wow! You have got to be kidding. That just made my day kid. It really did.

NYCEagle said...

Winning 6 out of 7 to end the year. How would you describe that?

NYCEagle said...

But no, we wouldn’t start the season ranked. Because of the inherent bias against BC from the National Media, I think we need to roll through our first 4 OOC games next year, and win our first ACC game in order to break the top 25

BCEagles2014 said...

Glad to hear I did! Hope you're having a great day friend :) Winners of 6 out of their last 7 games is pretty damn good. A win over a team that demolished Ohio State would add further credence to BC being on the rise.

Unknown said...

You are so clueless. You also have to factor the quality of the opponents they beat. Other than Louisville all of the teams they beat during this stretch have been garbage. Top 25, that's a good one. WOW!

Unknown said...

They aren't helping their cause by scheduling teams like UMass, Holy Cross, Temple or Purdue.

BCEagles2014 said...

If not for losing our starting QB to an ACL injury mid-game, BC beats NC State. Syracuse beat Clemson and BC destroyed them. Speaking of Clemson, them, Bama and other teams of that elite tier also schedule cupcakes. BC is not alone in this, and I'd argue their OOC scheduling has gotten better lately.

Tim said...

2014-
If history is any indication, BC will not be ranked in the preseason poll. We were not even ranked in the 2007 preseason poll when Matt Ryan was our QB and we were coming off a ten-win season.

Unknown said...

Are you comparing BC to Clemson now? Wow, that's quite a leap.

BCEagles2014 said...

Not quite, but I see my comment has gone right over your head. Let me break this down simply so even you can understand. I'm not saying BC is comparable to Clemson. They're frankly nowhere close to that. Upsets happen, and that's exactly what Syracuse did to Clemson. But the fact remains that Syracuse had to be good enough to beat them, and BC demonstrably destroyed Cuse to end the season. So logically speaking, it is not too much a leap to say Boston College was a good team this year.

Still not convinced? With the exception of Wake Forest who actually was very very solid this year, BC only lost to very elite/ranked teams. They lost to #1 Clemson, #14 Notre Dame, #22 Virginia Tech and a then ranked #23 NC State. Again BC only lost to NC State by 3 after losing our starting quarterback. BC hung 45 on Louisville and their reigning Heisman winner on their home turf. Stats are not your friend this time Mr. Yeaster so I suggest you cut your losses while you can. Class is dismissed.

Unknown said...

So basically you have made my case for me. BC isn't capable of beating a ranked team, so they will not be a ranked team. Thank you for helping to make my point. Wow, you really are a moron. TKO kid.

Unknown said...

BCEagle, you just made that way too easy. Time for your nap kid. Game over. Ding Ding Ding.

Unknown said...

MTSU beat Syracuse this year as well. I guess we can expect to see them in the preseason top 10 next year. I mean after all, they beat the team that beat Syracuse.

Knucklehead said...

8-5 though. Not 8-6.

Would have to win the first few. Dazzler is not good out of the gate and QB will be an issue.

Unknown said...

BCEagles2014 said...

@Yeast infection, when is UNC's bowl game? Heard they had a killer season!

Knucklehead said...

BC was clearly capable of beating a ranked team. Didn't do it because the QB had a season ending knee injury playing football. You clearly don't watch sports and know nothing about them.

Unknown said...

Knucks, you are a legend in your own mind. I almost respect you for that. At least we both can agree that BCEagle2014 is a moron.

Knucklehead said...

Yeaster, I don't agree with you at all.

Knucklehead said...

2014, They should win the first few games though and overall the schedule is alot easier next season.

We aren't going to know anything about Browns health until right before the season. They need to sprinkle some HGH on his knee and get him fixed. Or hope Andovers own can get shit done.

Either way we will be better than UNC or Duke.

BCEagles2014 said...

I think Yeaster most likely enrolled in those fake African studies classes during his time at UNC. That would explain his inability to follow the most basic of logic and revert to ad hominem attacks. As a certain world leader would say, "Sad!"

BCEagles2014 said...

@Knucklehead, I think that's a good prediction. Looking at the injury, I would assume Brown had an ACL tear/injury. I've seen too many ACL injuries to know that you don't just drop down on the ground from no contact without it being a tear or significant knee injury. The worry with ACL tears is that athletes are rarely ever the same as they were before. Brown was just beginning to show how elusive he could be towards the end of the season, so I hope he comes back without missing that.

I'd put the 1941 Sugar Bowl ahead of the '85 Cotton Bowl. While Flutie had won the Heisman in 1985 and BC had a great year, 1941 is superior because BC had a better (undefeated) record and opponent.

FWIW, Leahy left after that season and Denny Myers coached the Eagles in the 1942-43 season.

chicagofire1871 said...

Why do some think BC’s schedule is easier next year? We trade Virginia for Miami (much harder) and ND, NIU, CMU, UCONN for UMASS, Holy cross, Purdue and Temple. Our OOC might be a bit easier, but UVA for Miami sure isn’t! Seems like a wash at best!

I know this is late, but I'm sure we will have further discussions on this in future threads.

As Bravesbill asked - What the hell has this blog become?

Unfortunately, a blog which purportedly is for people to comment about BC Football and Basketball - but which has become something that's not much fun anymore. It's certainly something of which we cannot be proud at times.

Anonymity creates an atmosphere where some people are tempted to write in an irresponsible, offensive, harassing, defamatory, or otherwise inappropriate manner.

But there is no guarantee that anonymous blogging will protect hidden writers from protection.

Nevertheless, we should post as though our identities were known (I think we're to the point as a society where that should be required anyway) and we should do so in a manner that is conducive to good discussion about views and ideas.

That being said, I hope that ATL monitors postings constantly and removes any that are inappropriate. Of course, this is time consuming for a guy with a family and full time job, etc. So let's help Bill, and clean this up.

When reading other college football blogs, one realizes how far afield this one gets sometimes, and it's an embarrassment to Boston College, BC Athletics, Eagle in Atlanta Blog, and long time bloggers to this site who have strong opinions, but who follow basic decorum most of the time.

Go BC - Go Eagle in Atlanta.

Don't let the trolls kill us.

Heard rumor today that Hilliman will transfer to Rutgers !
Hate to see him go.
Dillon and Hilliman are good combo.

He has had plenty of touches even with Dillon.

Say it ain’t so !

Big Jack Krack, totally crushing it today! I agree with what you said. We need to get rid of the offensive posters like Knucklehead.

Said a couple of months ago when Khead started posting every three minutes that this blog had started to suck. Look at this thread. What a clown show. BCI bans, ATL. So should you, imho. Insults without wit is boring. Yeast and that Tony dude are witless.

Of course, if you’re used to Eagle Outsider, then there really are no boundaries I suppose.

The only other time a thread gets this busy is on uniform posts for some weird reason. Now’s the time ATL. Get 500 comments on white pants and italics and let’s find out what that means for the juveniles on board.

Oh, CT, you are priceless! Good post!

CT, you're on the money! You really nailed it!

Keep crushing it CT!

I agree with CT. While I despise the feminazi editor at BCI who is trying turn the blog into Buzzfeed with all of her Taylor Swift posts, I like their zero tolerance approach to trolls. A troll by the name of Mike Ruth (perhaps it was Yeaster himself) was spamming the BCI boards the other day and he was quickly banned.

While I understand Bill is busy with real-life commitments, he must better patrol this board and remove trolls who are disrupting the community. The comments themselves aren't really that annoying as they are just mindless insults of low wages and such, but it is annoying trying to sift through the trolling to find comments on the article at hand. If Bill doesn't have the time or interest to patrol the boards, then I am happy to do so myself. It's really starting to get out of hand now.

BCEagles, stop being such a cry baby. You really are too paranoid. I love how you think I am all of these different posters. You have quite the imagination little fella.

How come you never showed up during my morning shift at McDonald's? I'm working my second job at Wendy's now since that's all a BC degree could get me, so stop on by for a Frosty! My treat :)

Thanks. You really are a generous, giving person. Keep crushing it!

BCEagles2014, you are incredibly generous and one of a kind. I wish I could crush it like you...

CT, That opinion is not humble. Desperate for attention. If you don't like the thread move on.

What is this "crush(ing) it" business? Pardon my ignorance.

heard rumor today that Hilliman plans to go to Rutgers for last -postgrad year.
Big loss
Dillon and Hilliman were a good combo.
Even with Dillon's Blossoming , Hilliman still got a lot of touches.

hate to see him go

Heights said...

Big Jack Krack, we need to show you how to crush it.

Crushing = winning, succeeding, dominating, killin' it, wrecking it, etc.

BCEagles2014 said...

While I'm sad to see him go, I can't say I blame him. He came to BC as a high 4-star recruit with aspirations to become a focal part of our offense. He seemed to look the part too until he unfortunately injured himself in his sophomore season and never seemed to fully recover. Now with Dillon dominating and flashing Heisman potential, and Travis Levy looking good in backup, the writing is on the wall for Hilliman's opportunity at BC.

He's from NJ (St. Peter's Prep alumnus) and was originally committed to Rutgers before flipping to BC so it makes sense that he would go back to them. I sincerely hope he finds success at Rutgers and returns to being the player who wowed us his freshman season. Good luck Jon, hope to see you on Sunday's someday!
