ACC leading push for bigger Tournament and new rules

When you are the most powerful conference, you tend to flex your muscle. The ACC is doing that on the basketball front. The league is making a proposal to expand the NCAA Tournament field to 72. They also want some general rule changes like, pushing back the 3-point line, shortening the shot clock and expanding the lane.

Because the ACC tends to be one of the deepest leagues, the expanded tournament makes sense. It means one more team makes it. Because a few more game also means a few more dollars for the NCAA, I imagine this one will pass.

The rules changes are trickier. The 3-point line is an equalizer. As is slowing down the game via shot clock. I am not sure changing the lane helps or hurts less talented teams. A faster pace game where the 3 is harder helps ACC teams when they are playing less talented teams. I don't know if the small schools will get on board and support those ideas. What would be in it for them?

I would think the rules changes would be neutral for BC. Christian's team took a lot of 3s this year, but he is not tied to it like some programs. I think he would adjust his talent and approach as needed. The tournament field would help BC. Anything to get us back in the big dance would be nice.

Moves to get closer to the NBA. They should take on the NBA rules completely. Except fewer timeouts. The timeouts in basketball and football are brutal.

Good lord...There are already 8-10 teams in the tournament every year that don't belong like Oklahoma, Syracuse, Texas, etc this year. So let's expand it so teams that finish 7-13 in P5 conference play get in and further dilute an already meaningless regular season.

More money for ACC and thus more money for BC

I think that about sums up BC’s interest in the matter

Just like football bowls, way too many teams in post season. Utterly ludicrous.

They should get rid of the regular season, play basketball year round and increase the cable bill some more. Then everybody wins which means nobody does.

Shortening the shot clock is a terrible idea.

The NBA needs to be talking about lengthening shot clock it’s one of the many reasons I like college better. Things weren’t all that bad even when there was no shot clock in college. I’d honestly prefer lengthening shotclock over making it shorter.

Organizations are built around the shot clock. Hou, NO, GS, etc. If owners can squeeze one more dollar out of the game, they would make it a 10 second clock. This is not about the game. It’s about dudes on couches. If they thought that alligators at mid-court would generate three extra bucks, they’d do it. The Fan is the always the biggedt sucker. They know we’ll always come back. The ‘94 baseball strike proved it.

The same for the NCAA. If these super conferences can get obe more team in the tourney or some stupid bowl game, they'll do it. Honor died about 50 yrs ago. Sad. But the new reality.
