Hawkins officially gone

The long speculated is finally official -- Deontae Hawkins will not return to BC for a sixth year of college basketball. He signed with an agent this week, making him ineligible. Both sides pursued a sixth year as soon as it became clear he would not return from injury, but it was not to be. As we've learned from football, the system is not friendly to the sixth year and a player really needs to show a truly unique medical issue.

Hawkins' short BC career will remain a great what if. I think he might have been the difference between an NIT and an NCAA selection, but he was still not enough to make BC elite.

BC has been actively looking to use their last open scholarship on an impact player. Let's hope whoever gets it has better luck than Hawkins. Good luck to Deontae on his professional career.

Another site indicates he got his 6th year but decided to play in Europe - "In news that was somewhat expected, I can confirm that Boston College fifth-year senior forward Deontae Hawkins has decided to forego a sixth year of eligibility and turn pro, signing with Imperial Sports yesterday.

Hawkins was eligible for a sixth year, but already age 24 and having professional aspirations, Hawkins and the BC staff decided it would be best for him to turn pro and pursue European opportunities."

I think this was likely a mutual decision between him and BC. He wants to make money as a 24 year old, and BC would like to strike while the iron is hot on the recruiting trail. What I mean by that is BC’s name is a little more palatable to the bigger time recruits this offseason. No doubt due to the return to respectability in the ACC and the high profile success of Robinson and Bowman, to a lesser degree. What this means is we get a scholarship that we would not have otherwise had. We can use it immediately. A scholarship today is much more valuable than one 9 months from now, especially if next season is subpar as most are expecting it to be

Bottom line it’s been a tough offseason for us. Losing Robinson and now Hawkins. Also missed on some good transfers.

Program sucks. The sport is a cesspool and BC doesn't want to step in. Can see the valor on that to a certain extent.

Interesting. Wonder if the staff is optimistic about their pursuit of Saddiq Bey?

Six years at BC is not a good thing. One must have a life. Good for Hawkins to move on and make some money in Europe. I am sure that the entire BC community wishes him well. Athletics must be a means to an end and not an end in itself.---- A university education is a tool for fulfillment yes but also a way of making a living and raising a family. There is no doubt that the NCAA has lost its way in this respect. Hawkins just reminded everyone what the real purpose of an education is all about.
