BC-NC State preview

Because of the TOB connection and Doeren and Addazio getting hired during the same cycle, I constantly feel like we have to use NC State as some sort of benchmark. Doeren's been slightly more successful than Addazio, but I don't know if it has been any more fulfilling for NC State fans. Both programs and coaches seem to have ceilings and I think either side will only feel happy when those ceilings are broken.

What's on my mind (not totally related to this game) NC State and ECU just scheduled a tentative game for December 1 to make up for the games each lost with the hurricane (against different teams). If either makes their respective conference championship game, then this game won't happen. I guess I applaud the schools for scheduling a game. More football is better than less football. However, it seems really unnecessary for anything other than the gate revenue. The media contracts are covered. There was probably some sort of insurance related to any cancellation problems. At that point it is unlikely that either will need a win. So why do it? Also, can you imagine the fight BC would go through with the locals to get a replacement game at Alumni with only two months notice?

Three Simple Keys
1. Rush for more than 200 yards. Regardless of it if is Dillon or Glines or a collective of BC guys, BC needs to establish the run and stick with it. We have an advantage on the Oline. Let's lean on it.
2. Great LB play. This group has been collectively the most disappointing. All the guys coming off injury seem a step too slow. We need them to come up huge this weekend. No missed tackles. No getting swallowed up on running plays. No letting short easy passes over the middle turn into long gains.
3. Good decisions from Brown. I feel like Brown is on the edge of something really big, but it will only come when he is making good reads and also when he can be a slight threat to run. There are big plays for him to make if he does the right thing.

Gambling Notes
-- Addazio is 3-2 vs Doeren
-- BC leads the series 9-6
-- Addazio is 14-13 on the road while coaching BC
The current line is BC+6

Factoid
The road team has won four straight in this series.

Scoreboard Watching
Once again a Notre Dame game matters to us. This week the Irish take on our future opponent Virginia Tech. I didn't expect VT to be good this year, but they are looking decent so far. I big home win would be hard to ignore.

I hope to see...
Denis have a big second half. I feel for his targeting penalty/suspension. The season has probably not gone as he expected and sitting out half a game is a weird way to prepare. I hope he comes out in the second half and gives everyone a lift. [CORRECTION: I guess I have the timing wrong on this and Denis won't be suspended for the first half, since he was called for it in the first half of the Temple game.]

BC is in trouble if...
Finley has time in the pocket. He will find the open man or at least attack the guy they view as the weakest.

Bottom Line
Because I almost always do, I am going to predict a BC victory, but I don't feel great about it. If we can avoid turnovers and force a few of our own, I think BC can win a close, physical battle.
Final Score: BC 28, NC State 24

According to ATL's Rosy predictions, BC will go 9-3. I doubt it but hope springs eternal.

Denis is a very good player. There is no excuse for his action. He could have maimed the receiver whom I believe was Wright. BC should have given him some type of disciplinary action even if just making him sit out the first series. You just cannot tolerate the intentional effort to hurt another player.

Bad coaching will lose us this game.

Watch.

Unfortunately, I believe you are right. The whole world knows Dazoshit's game plan.

If Glines can muscle 3-4 yards every time he touches the ball while they load the box, it could open up Dillon and the rest of the offense.

He might be better than Dillon at grinding it out through the tackles.

This may be viewed as a “hot take” but I thought Glines was clearly the better runner against Temple. He was extremely decisive, and only made 1 cut on each play. He ran where the hole was supposed to be and either went through it or created it by hitting the line of scrimmage at full speed. He was also patient enough to let his oline set up blocks when a hole wasn’t available right away. I don’t think he had a single TFL. It seems like every week now Dillon has 3 or 4 runs on first or second down that go for -3 or -4 yards and effectively end drives because he tries to bounce outside and go for a homerun on plays designed to go up the middle. It’s a very bad habit, and not one he showed last year. He seems to be thinking too much. Trust your veteran oline. Hit the hole hard where it’s supposed to be based on the playcall. He’s 245 pounds. If he does that he should never get tackled for a loss

Through the first 4 games I couldn’t help but think that our oline somehow looked worse than last year, despite returning all starters. Then when I saw Glines run I realized it wasn’t the oline, it’s Dillon. He’s a step slower and markedly more indecisive. When he’s right, his best attribute is his ability to grind out yardage between the tackles. That’s how you wear down a defense. Don’t try to win the game on every play. Doing way too much

Kicking game is the key. The snapper is a stiff.

JBQ said...

Knucklehead may very well have a point. The holder problems have been cleaned up with Jeff. If the ball is there, the mascot could kick extra points. The only other possibility would be the long snapper. Many schools give scholarships to snappers. No well coached school has a kicker who is 14-18 in extra points which is 77%.

This has been stated repeatedly but still defies comprehension: how can Dazoshit not recruit a respectable FG/PAT kicker in 6 years. How?

We obviously have high expectations for Dillon but let’s not get crazy. If Daz wanted and let him play the first two games he would already have over 1000 yards on the season. He definitely needs to hit the hole between the tackles like he did last year but he is still best running back in ACC by a mile. Daz ran him 25x in the first half last week which is just a joke.

That being said I love Glines, tough as nails, does everything, run, catch, block, tackle whatever. He can be great offset to Dillon and give him some rest.

Brown is the key and anyone saying he has been good this year doesn’t watch the game with their eyes. He was good at Wake cause the receivers were so open Mod could have completed those passes. He is inconsistent and inaccurate. Two of the worst traits you can have as a QB. That being said he seems like a great kid, has talent and has leadership qualities so I can see why staff sticks with him. He is in his 3rd year of college, he needs to step up play consistent and complete simple plays on target. Give me 15-19, 210 yds and a zero turnovers every day and twice on Sunday vs Wake/Purdue.

Eagles can get a big win on Saturday but it’s all on #13 like it is for every football team in every game

Knucklehead said...

The missed Pat last week was a snap. Cannot make up 8-10 points a game because of your kicking game, Temple and Wake.

The 5 step drop crap from the Purdue game seemed to stop against Temple if I recall correctly. QB needs to run if the throws are not available knee or otherwise. Not fair to the team to stand there throwing the ball up for grabs like Purdue game.

NYCEagle said...

Last year the second things broke down he took off and ran the ball, and he was actually very effective at extending drives that way. He hasn’t even looked to run this year, he just sits in the pocket and waits for the rush to get home when no one is open downfield. Can’t have that. Either his mind still isn’t right following the knee injury or the coaching staff told him to stay in the pocket to avoid reinjury

Dillon is tip toeing to the line of scrimmage on half his runs. No wonder safeties and linebackers smaller than him are flying down hill and tackling him with relative ease. As a running back you have to be the aggressor. You play at half speed guys in the ACC are gonna clean your clock

Knucklehead said...

He's hurt. He has been hurt since last season. Was definitely avoiding contact against Purdue. Less so against Temple.

If they can run to the right side against NC State they will be fine.

Was interesting they used Glines last week and not the freshman beast.

Glines needs to keep his head up this week when he runs. He is a maniac but he will get hurt running with his head down

Geezer eagle said...

I was very impressed with Glines. The kid is a bad-ass. Watch Dazoshit ignore him this week

Knucklehead said...

I don't think Glines can be ignored. Doesn't seem like the regular docile "BC Man" player we get.

Knucklehead said...

Seems like he would tell Dazzler to fly a kite and go on the field anyway . . . Given the right circumstances.

Regarding benchmarks, last season NC State won nine games and ended the season ranked. What's Daz's best year so far?

Geezer eagle said...

Agreed. He could be a diamond in the rough. Remember flutie was an unsung nobody. Look how that turned out.

curranac said...

Let’s pump the brakes on Dillon having a down year. He’s third in the country with 652 yards rushing and everybody plays cupcakes in September. Glines was a very good RB in high school at St. X in Cincinnati (Luke’s) high school. Typical BC player who keeps developing as an underclassman and emerges when the time comes.

Geezer eagle said...

Let's make them a dual threat. Oops. We have Dazoshit as a head coach. No way he has the intellect to make that adjustment .

Knucklehead said...

Dazzler talked him up, Glines, last season but he got hurt. They must be redshirting the Maryland freshman. The levy guy was limping a bit last week as well.

Shabby1011 said...

Glines will be lead runner tomorrow and think that’s a good thing. He makes one cut and runs north.

Brown will have to make plays for Eagles to win. NC State is overrated but talented. D has to make plays on D which they have done.
