A nice basketball moment

For those who missed this...here is Herren Jr getting a scholarship.

I could go all Scrooge here and call this a waste but it is not. Herren is contributing real minutes and is showing good upside. Is he an elite ACC player? No but he is certainly a scholarship player on this team. Merry Christmas Chris.

That's no way to talk to knucklehead.

That comment is obviously meant for Cteee or skidmarkMod.

Mod, What are his stats? Type them here so I don't have to go to another website to look them up. Put your semester and a half at Rutgers to use.

Stupid rat.

SERIOUS--I haven't been paying much to the basketball team as a whole, just that they've done pretty well in non-conference (and that the women have surprised under a new coach). Work and life are just too busy. There's barely time to mock Addazio, as sadly easy as he makes that activity.

The scholarship video struck me for the respect that the players to a man hold for Herren Jr. His Dad flames out at BC, as does his uncle. Yet he still chooses to go there, and he has stepped up to say the least. You have to have some mental toughness and something solid in your character for things to shake out like that. So after the video, I went looking in the news and found this Bill Reynolds column from the ProJo.
https://www.providencejournal.com/sports/20181208/bill-reynolds-chris-herren-jr-is-writing-his-own-story

Reynolds has been around and known Herren Jr. since he was a kid. He reports that Spinelli advocated for Herren Jr. I've been generally skeptical about Jim Christian, but Spinelli has always impressed me going back to his playing days in Leominster.

Reynolds notes how Herren Jr. has always seemed to be a grounded person, even as a middle schooler with all eyes on him for the TMZ factor. Yet Reynolds reports that Herren Jr. was pretty even-keeled, and maintained that demeanor at Portsmouth (RI) High School and then commuting (to some extent at least) to Tabor Academy. Interesting too how he acknowledges the pain his father caused, but sees the path traveled and notes that he's always known his Mom is a true angel.

Look, in non-OC life I'm easily conned when there's a heartstring-type of story. I want to believe the best, especially in a BC kid. There's always some chance there's a "street angel, house devil" element to this. But the evidence and the way the kids responded to him seems to indicate that this is a truly decent person, and will at the very least be a solid fourth guard and a heck of a leader and role model going forward. I'm glad he's an Eagle, and thankful to Spinelli for standing up and vouching for him.

I think he is the type of player who will continue to surprise.
I had no idea about his scholarship status.
Elite player like Zion?

I bet HERREN just keeps getting better.

Good post, OC. I am rooting for Chris Jr., and all BC players - and Boston College.

Go BC!

I'm with working rich - I think young Mr. Herren, Jr. will keep getting better. I don't know if he will ever start (it doesn't matter) - but he could be and will be a killer off the bench. I hope he's BC's Frank Ramsey of the Celtics from their dominant days - a 6th man off the bench who would just sap the opponent's strength.

Big Jack Krack said...

As Bill Russell said - when most teams went to the bench, there was a fall off. When we did, there was an upgrade (with Frank Ramsey [RIP]).

Such could be the important role for Chris Herren Jr.

The pigs comment at 11:17 am is disingenuous.

It was very nice to have something to smile about when it comes to BC men's athletics. Best wishes to the young man and the team.

Go BC against DePaul tomorrow.

And soon we have to switch to Boise State.

Not much chatter or rah, rah coming out of TEHC for this game.

Great story! I really had no idea he wasn't on scholarship. I suspect he'll prove worthy of it.

As I am heading out to play a round of golf, I watched this again for the 3rd or 4th time.

I'm with all and BC 86 - this was a moving video of a Team Merry Christmas for Chris.

Just tuned into the game and we beat DePaul right at the end. Nice win, guys.

Tabbs looks real good and both he and Pop threw in the key free throws - after great defense, steals and rebounds.

Herren has another good game today. Good win after a big comeback. Bowman with another clunker though.

It was a tough game and DePaul is not a bad team.
Clutch to pull it out down the stretch.

The team has to gel a little more.m
Tabbs and Herren are legitimate.
