Two thoughts on the shifting recruiting class

The Early Signing Day is Wednesday. As it approaches, BC's well-regarded class continues to lose members. Florida OLine prospect Maurice Smith flipped to Florida State. Michigan LB prospect Marvin Ham has decided to go to Colorado. Predictably this has created frustration among BC fans that follow this stuff. Here are two statements related to this griping, followed by my explanation.

1. I don't really worry about decommits. They happen everywhere. Conversely, we always tend to flip a player to us. No one that has decommited from Addazio so far has proven to be a difference maker elsewhere. (Kwity Paye is the highest profile and has only earned "honorable mention" All Big Ten.)

2. Keeping Addazio to protect this class was stupid. It wasn't mentioned in the extension press release, but I do know that this recruiting class was a factor in keeping Addazio. That was extremely short-sighted. You don't keep a coach because of one batch of recruits. You keep a coach because of a body of work and if he is maximizing the program's potential.

In the end this recruiting class will be fine. Addazio's most redeeming quality is that he's proven to be a very good talent evaluator. He has upgraded the talent across the board and most of his recruits have exceeded their ratings coming into the program. If ratings hold and his past evaluation skills carryover, this will be his best class yet. My concern and fear is that his other pattern (of mismanaging games) will negate this increased talent and he will continue to underachieve while at BC.

It has really come to the point that one has to wonder if BC is intentionally sabotaging itself. Can anyone think of a Power 5 program as dysfunctional as we are? Protecting the 2019 recruiting class was the only justification for extending Addazio and that has resulted in 2 potential program changing players decomitting. How foolish Jarmond looks right now!

Through our head coach we choose to play with "one hand tied behind our back".

Mind boggling and pitiful - but the guy got an extension.

In the Boston accent - we say to each other - how you doing, Succah?

The class sucks. This entire thing is a clown show.

ObserverCollege said...

In all seriousness, I agree with ATL regarding Addazio's skill as a talent evaluator, setting aside the joke of "OC" knowing all about evaluating high school student-athletes 8-(. Dillon is not the only one. Petrula. Tommy Sweeney. Zach Allen. Allen Ray. Yiadom. Kamrin Moore. Justin Simmons. He's brought in a number of under-the-radar guys who have real talent, as the NFL has told us.

I hate Addazio for his game planning, his gameday coaching, his posturing, and especially his blinders regarding certain players. The love for Baker. Burying Davon Jones. I would not be the least surprised if we see a "Wee Willie Parker" emerge, where someone disfavored in this regime blossoms in the NFL. As we all know, that's one of the most damning indictments of a coach is to miss a real talent because he doesn't fit your pre-conceived notion of a "dude".

Unfortunately, Leahy was not going to allow any move on Addazio this year given cost and PR considerations. I'm sure Jarmond was also wary of Addazio getting ahead of the story with his media/ESPN manipulation skills in a way that makes Texas A&M look like they're playing CandyLand. We're going to need to suffer through a losing season before BC will bite the bullet.

eagle1331 said...

Why would you commit to a program that a month later can't find someone interested in taking their OC job?

Why would you commit to a coach that got a BS job extension to try and save recruiting, as other commits were dropping?

Why would you commit to play at a school whose AD cares more about his personal fashion choices than actually making measurable progress in any fact? Jarmond is riding on the coat tails of the one accomplishment of his predecessor, thus far.

Why would you commit to a coach who throws his kids under the bus in press conferences?

Why would you commit to a coach who came out with terrible game plans 3 times in a row to end the season? That failed to make half time adjustments in said games? That lost all momentum he built, by his own coaching failures and doing, and then touted Gameday's interest in our school before those blunders, and the main reason to keep him?

BC Football has become a joke. I don't blame the kids for flipping. Jarmond screwed the pooch by extending Daz, and these teenagers are wise enough to see it, while MJ, the Board, and Leahy sit their clueless or indifferent, and the rich donors keep writing checks because they really don't give a rat's ass, and the few true fans left are abandoning ship.

I just don't know how you can fire a coach who is potentially 8-5 and just a tad below 10-3. Nevertheless, the "handwriting is in the sand". With "Mod", I would have fired him just on future potential. However, he is owed 5 mill. I believe that the extension has a buyout clause. With massive graduation losses at key positions (Allen and Ray are just two), the gimme games may be all that he wins. A clobbering at Notre Dame should open the "squawk box" and send him on his way.

janebc said...

Unfortunately, 1331 is spot on. Why would any kid come to play for a coach whose decisions are not subject to second guessing or questionable, but mind-numbingly bad- guaranteed to fail? The game left this guy behind 25 years ago and he gives them no chance to win. And what is arguably more unfathomable is BCs decision to let the program hit rock bottom twice in one decade

And on another note - Oh Boy! I can hardly stand the excitement and build up for this big December 26th at 1:30pm Bowl Game.

We are set up to get blown out by our own Head Coach.

Maybe the players can overcome somehow. I hope so.

But more belly series up the middle runs to 8, 9 and even 10 in the box.

Here we come Boise State - "here we are, come getcha some."

So exciting.

Sure, it's exciting when AJ has both feet, and the Oline can open some holes. But that is a stretch anymore with Addazio who has market regressed this year.

Sad.

All the defensive players came in to play for Brown because his style is NFL. The BC defense in done. Allen, Ray Smith a corner and safety gone. The defense sucks. The offense has no coordinator. They cannot get anyone to take the job.

Only the idiot Mod would say he is giving 7 $$. Stupid waste of money just like the Rutgers degree.

Sometimes when you bring a horse to water, you have to let it hang around and get used to the water. You might end up missing dinner, but eventually the horse is going to drink.

We'd like Fr. Leahy and the applicable Board (of I can't remember what they call it) to go ahead and move on from Coach Addazio. The only way to see the coach give up his guaranteed $5m or so would have been to engineer an attractive offer someplace else. But that wasn't going to happen--not at that pay rate.

So BC would be stuck eating $5m, and we all know BC doesn't do that. Even with the "extension", I'm sure the bill is closer to say $3m if they let him go next year.

For BC to eat even $3m, Addazio has to make his failures utterly obvious. That means letting him flounder through the upcoming season. Although I usually agree with JaneBC, I don't think BC is in the disastrous straits we were in post-Spaz and post-Henning. There is talent for a quality S&C program and good strategists to exploit. Jarmond would have to make a very savvy hire though, not just one that gets him good reviews. The WBB pick gives me hope for our coaching search next December.

Urban going bye bye took moving Dazzler to OSU and bringing in Day off the table. Which was the plan.

We need to do what Northwestern did with Fitzpatrick, give an alumnis time(Al Washington Brian Flores) in the job to build success or go with an older age HC who knows what the fuck he is doing and support him with young assistant like Campanale and Brown, meaning bring back Paul Pasqualoni but as HC.

Giving 7 dollars doesn't accomplish shit. Literally, figuratively or in the warped deflective manner of thinking Mod lives by sustains himself by.

So, basically, Addazio has a moderate talent for identifying prospects, some of whom actually attend BC, but is such a lousy game-day coach that the team never lives up to its potential.

Dixie, BC never gets the 4&5 star studs. The difference is previous coaches like Tom O'Brien were able to coach them up. Dazoshit can't tie his own shoes.

@Knucklehead - Pats aren't playing SuperBowl-winning caliber defense, but they are certainly doing well enough that Flores will get interest again this offseason (the same way he did last season too).

Agreed that Kraft probably isn't paying him a ton because being a pupil of Belichick is worth something. How many OCs and DCs get interest merely because of that?

Also, Flores will get the nod to be the official DC after this season. The question is will he stay or take an HC job somewhere else. We'll find out.

Anonymous said...

The timing isn't right. This season has hurt his stock. The Belickick understudy track record is weak. The Patriots seem to be falling apart. He may get DC title after this year but he isn't getting an NFL HC job as a defensive minded coach whose defense sucks. They are hiring offensive guys in the NFL right now. He kind of reminds me of the guy Tampa hired who sucked before current guy who sucks there now too. Not sure he is a successful NFL HC. He might get an HC job in a couple years but I don't think he will do well consistently. Thinking maybe a team like Jacksonville goes after him now with coughlin and a defensive minded team but they really need to turn it around quick. Maybe the Jets(Bronx guy could sell her) but they cannot take a risk either.

Anonymous said...

Her = himself. Excuse phone.

The Tall One said...

Hey - I agree with all of your points. But I also think that teams will interview him and an offer will come. I also think he is definitely more likely to find himself as an HC in the NFL before HC in the NCAA.

And more importantly for these boards, as much as I would LOVE to see him coaching BC, I don't see it happening anytime soon.

As I receive more emails from BC asking for donations and promoting these new athletic plan - I can't help but think that I have been a season ticket holder every year since I graduated 15 years ago and have had a tailgate every year as well. If this coming season goes as badly as I think it will (5-7), then I may just stop doing it altogether.

How this organization is setting up this football team (let's just keep doing the same thing over and over) is a lot like how Addazio runs his offense (just keep running it up the middle into the pile of people).

Decent replacements for the 2019 recruiting class today.

Mod is a hack.

BCAlum2000 said...

Flores' stock is still high as he is thought of as a great leader. In the NFL, where you are surrounded by top-level x's and o's guys, this is the one intangible that is invaluable. He supposedly hit it out of the park last year when interviewing with Arizona and despite being on no one's radar, nearly landed that job. That reputation is now out throughout the league. That said, I do agree that the NFL is all about offense now and that his stock has at best stagnated this season. I think it would be a no brainer for him to accept a job as a head coach at his alma mater and get paid $2-$3 million in the process. That said, he has to be offered the job and we all know that isnt happening at the moment ...

Sixteen players in the recruiting signings. The quarterback is 6 ft 4. The running back is 5 ft 9 which means smaller. There are six d-backs and all but one are 6 ft which means 5 ft 9. The linebacker is 6 ft 5. There are two big d-ends and two big d linemen. One O lineman is 6 ft 8 and the other is 6 ft 4. Both wide receivers are 5 ft 9 to 6 ft which means both are 5 ft 9.--------------------------BC needs size. The d backs are a definite "short coming". The wide receivers also. What about a big running back like AJ? The rest of the recruits are "big and mean". Most teams that BC faces are big time with tall 6 ft 4 receivers. Their own receivers at 5 ft 9 are being covered by tall d backs. These two areas are a definite problem and need to be addressed. The rest of the tall recruits are a definite welcome addition.
